Dreamcast 85: Unchecked Optimism

In by Rice Cube28 Comments

We’re mere hours from Opening Day if you consider anything less than 48 “mere,” so it’s time to do our season preview episode!

In this edition:

  • The great Shohei Ohtani gambling caper
  • Cubs roster, rotation, bullpen, lineup, and outlook
  • MLB predictions including awards and postseason

We’ll probably talk about the MLBPA snafus later on after we get a few games that actually count under our belt.

You can check out the podcast page or just click on the embedded players below. You can also use the sidebar to get to our Apple Podcast pages and leave a nice review and rating if it pleases you.

    Rice Cube,

I think 90 is a pretty reasonable expectation for this group. Their Pythagorean last year with a similar cast was around that and this team likely has greater upside. Counsell also inspires much more confidence at the margins than Ross did.

    Rice Cube,

I think they could reasonably exceed 90 with good health and 2-3 players beating their projections, but my back of the napkin prediction for this year’s team is 88-90 and the Central.

    Perkins,

    Rice Cube,

If they can stay reasonably healthy and basically tread water for the first half, I see them trading a bit of the farm system for a front-of-the-rotation upgrade or some such. That’s what I suspect will put them over 90 wins.

    Perkins,

I went with 85 wins and a division win, though I was kind of questioning myself by the end of the podcast (dying laughing). I think this team is better than last year’s, and hope Counsell is indeed an upgrade. But regression to the mean is a powerful adversary.

Accounting is dumb and money is a fake construct

The Dodgers announced that they have signed catcher Will Smith to a ten-year extension which runs through 2033. It is reportedly a guarantee of $140MM with no opt-outs for the Apex Baseball client, though with deferrals. Smith will get a $30MM signing bonus, a salary of $13.55MM in 2024, salaries of $13MM from 2025 to 2027, $9.5MM from 2028 to 2032 and $9.95MM in 2033. The deferrals will be paid out at a rate of $5MM annually from 2034 to 2043 and the deal will have a competitive balance tax hit of $12.2MM.
