Cubs 4, Reds 3

OSS: War Bear walks it off in extras.

Three up

  1. Kyle Schwarber managed to drop a Raisel Iglesias pitch in the basket to give the Cubs a walkoff win.
  2. KB and Robel Garcia also homered in this one to tie the game up in the earlier innings. Garcia has a .703 wOBA since being called up to the Cubs, and while the dude strikes out a lot he’s certainly providing more spark than Daniel Descalso. How is he still on the team?
  3. The bullpen was solid in relief of spot starter Alec Mills, pitching four innings of shutout ball.

Three down

  1. Alec Mills gave a credible spot start, allowing three runs and striking out six over six innings. He also somehow hit four batters, which seems bizarre. I missed the game so was a little confused by all the Derek Dietrich references flying around until I found it buried in the box score. One day when I am the Supreme Leader I will decree that HBPs will be counted as walks or something in a pitcher’s box score line.
  2. Newest Cubs Martin Maldonado had a brutal day at the plate, going 0-5 and striking out with the winning run on third in the ninth inning for the Cubs most negative play by WPA on the day.
  3. The Beers won big so the Cubs division lead remains at 2.5 games.

Next up: The Cubs go for what would somehow be the first series win of the season over the Reds. Yu Darvish takes on Sonny Gray at 1:20 PM CT, in a battle between two guys who have had inconsistent seasons.

Somehow Darvish hasn’t won a game at home yet either. He’s 0-3 at Wrigley, 2-1 on the road. Although this primarily seems to be due to run support as Darvish is 2-0 with 6+ runs in support and 0-4 when Cubs score less than 6.

Hopefully the Cubs can score 6+ runs and secure Darvish his first win!

I just saw that Dietrich play and now I hope the Cubs hit him intentionally every plate appearance for the rest of the season.

Are we talking about the Rizzo interference play? That was clearly interference on Rizzo’s part and I thought Dietrich did everything right. It’s exactly what I’d want a Cubs 2nd baseman to do.

    Great outing by Darvish at home. 83 pitches, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K

Not opposed to Joe going to the pen, but anyone know why he was pulled? Seems like he was cruising based on his line.

It was probably a combination of the fact that it was Darvish’s third time through the Reds’ order and the fact that his turn in the batting order came up (to lead off an inning, no less). Both these considerations are of far more strategic importance than whether a pitcher is “cruising.”
