What Say the Armchair Umpires?

In Postgame by Rice Cube47 Comments

Here is the play in question:

My thoughts…

  1. Still can’t believe it was cut off, but that did allow for a stronger relay throw than hoping Happ had the strength to get 250+ feet in the arm to Amaya…
  2. Was Amaya standing on the plate, and is that allowed?
  3. Hector Neris is one lucky bastard.
  4. It really doesn’t matter, Cubs win!

I really need to find more than the same three answers whenever Negro Leagues is a category.

In further explaining the call, an MLB official said Thursday that Amaya’s foot was on home plate, but blocking didn’t occur; Pete Alonso had a lane to home plate and reached the plate without being blocked.

Thus, the catcher stepping on home plate doesn’t lead to a hard-and-fast call for blocking. The league says the rule does not state an automatic violation will occur, no matter what else happens, if a catcher’s foot is on home plate. In analyzing calls at home plate, the league wants to prioritize safety and use common sense, the MLB official added.

Thoughts (broadcast is quite muted)…PCA probably was obstructed by ump, but the overthrow was backed up well and they couldn’t just give him the base

Wow, big heat from Palencia. He looks great on days where he knows where it’s going (dying laughing).

The consensus seems to be that PCA’s helmet touch is not allowed but nobody bothered to review it and I guess the umpires didn’t care or remember the rule, so lucky us I suppose?
