Things Dale Sveum says

May as well make this a series. On Cubs.com now is a piece about Javier Baez and it has this money quote from Dale Sveum.

MESA, Ariz. — Javier Baez found out in one day just how much he still has to learn.

One of the Cubs' top prospects, Baez played in an early Wednesday "B" game against the Rangers and then went 0-for-3 in Chicago's Cactus League game in Surprise that afternoon. He saw a lot of different pitchers throwing at a variety of arm angles.

"Some were over here," he said, pointing to his ankles. "The other one was here [in the middle], and another one was over the top. It was kind of hard to hit the ball."

It was a smorgasbord of deliveries.

"They got a little taste of everything to understand what 162 games of Major League pitching is all about," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said of Baez and the other young right-handed hitters who played in both games.

One day, two games equal to the experience of a 162 game season.

I don’t feel that’s even remotely what Sveum said. All he said was that he got a taste of what 162 games in the majors is like, meaning that in 162 games you’re going to see a ton of different types of deliveries. Which might not be something you see as often in the minors.

I have no idea of if that’s true. But he clearly didn’t say, “In this one game he got the experience of a 162 game season.”
