Fun Cubs Facts After the Reds Series

In Commentary And Analysis by Rice Cube141 Comments

That was a fun series. Here’s some silly facts after the Cubs significantly improved their run differential.

Somehow, those 150 runs represents the most in the National League or maybe even the majors, I forgot which, but it’s a lot.

Beating the hell out of the team that used to lead the division up until you beat the snot out of them is pretty cool.

Because the Cubs didn’t hit any homers today, and the 3 crappy teams tied with the Reds for 2nd most HR allowed all did, the Reds now are 5th in HR allowed (152).

Isn’t “X” bad for search engine optimization?

“Ok Google, search random Cubs facts X” seems like it’ll get you vastly different results than

Surprised Sean Doolittle was so high for Nats-A’s. Should have gone with Jon Lester.

Fun time going back through some old Dodgers teams. Pedro Martinez was their setup guy in 1993!

So does the Big 12 absorb the remaining Pac 7?

Or WSU, OreSt, Cal and Stanford to Mountain West with ASU, Az and Utah to Big 12? (Maybe Stanford to Big 12 because of basketball.)

    BVS,

Some of the remaining teams might go independent, but Mountain West seems most likely. If the PacX leadership was any flavor of competent they would just raid the mountain west teams with the allure of the relatively prestigious PacX branding, but if they were any level of incompetent they wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place (dying laughing).

That’s a flusher of a game. I just hope the Cubs can take one of three, which I guess means tomorrow since they don’t win on Sundays.

Used only former Cubs for GG column and totalled 3% rarity there. Not forcing a team connection was a nice change of pace.

Giving up just the one run was a miracle but hopefully they have the bullpen lined up for the remainder of this game just in case

    Rice Cube,

José Ramírez doesn’t have anything close to a hothead rep, but he came up mad about something.

Love how Vaughn had to carry Anderson back to the dugout, despite Vaughn being like 5 inches shorter.

I’ll be curious to hear what set that off.

Apparently Anderson has been hitting opponents with extra hard tags for a long time and Ramirez told him to respect the game and to knock it off before he hurt someone. Ironic, since Ramirez had the hardest tag and Eloy got hurt.

But if baseball continues with this discussion about breaking ties after so many innings with a HR derby, that’ll be the new dumbest thing in sports.

    Rice Cube,

If you want to rage on Tim Anderson, there’s no shortage of material, but as I recall much of it is also him not taking bulls… from morons a la Milton Bradley. But honestly I tune out a lot of drama both now and in the MB days. We’d need a cameo appearance from dmick to tell me if I’m remembering correctly.

    Rice Cube,
Unless you are in the Atlanta blackout area.

    Rice Cube,

You don’t bring Kilian up as a starter unless he’s starting that day, which he obviously isn’t. So they are giving him the Steele/Thompson treatment and have him in middle relief, I guess.

Maybe that’s better. Air it out, kid.

    BVS,

I generally like Tim Anderson and I also don’t really keep track of the drama, but based on the information available and similarly to what happened with MB, I’m guessing Tim doesn’t do himself many favors.

    BVS,

If Steele can hold the line that gives the Cubs the option to use him as a starter later on in the week rather than mopping up so I’m good with that option

The Olson at bat and the Belli at bat were absolute clinics on hitting to the game situation and defensive positioning. Olson refused to do what the Cubs wanted him to do (try to pull a slider running away from him) and shot one to left against the shift, and Bellinger defied Atlanta’s attempt to force him to slap the ball the other way and hooked a low and outside pitch down the right field line when the Atlanta RF was well into right center. This is really fun to watch.

I know the bullpen has seen a lot of action of late but still surprised that Ross let Steele keep going there. Was clearly running on the fumes of fumes

Feels like a good time of year to be playing the Braves. They’re coming off of (and probably heading into) series with lesser competition including a Reds team in a downward spiral. They very well may lose this game and the series, but this is setting the standard for how well you have to play to succeed on a postseason level, and they have to feel at this point that they can compete at the top level. Just a good mentality-setting series for them right now.

On a weekend when they played the best team in MLB and their rivals played the Nationals and Pirates, the Cubs managed to pick up ground on both teams. Awesome.
