Dreamcast 68: Making It Worthwhile

In by Rice Cube104 Comments

Glad the Cubs didn’t blow it in the ninth, but they probably should figure out how to find a better lefty reliever.

Anyway, RC & Berselius hang out to discuss the happenings around the Trade Deadline now that it’s over, including what the Cubs did. We also hope for a quick fix for Marcus Stroman and Seiya Suzuki while also considering how the new rules and the fun injected into the game has benefitted the league in terms of attendance, plus how we watch games and the new Marquee streaming package.

This was a rough one, even with my vague knowledge of early 2000s orioles teams

    BVS,

Oh. I see. Each play is a different grid.

I’m trying to wrap my brain around how you code for something like that as that would require a pretty rapid search of the baseball encyclopedia which isn’t exactly a small data set, unless he did what the Wordle guy did and just preprogrammed all the possibilities.

I imagine having a bum hip will mess with your pitching, berselius kind of called it except I forgot it was 15 days for pitchers, 10 days for position guys

Really like Suzuki’s approach there. New P in, Seiya with reputation of not swinging on 1st pitch. Reds just gave up lead and Gomes on second.. Reliever will want to get a quick strike so the ball is hittable.

    RBI single.

There’s a bunch of chatter from us on WSD podcasts from Feb to May talking about how this team will have to win a lot of 2-1 type games on strong pitching and defense with a shallow and weak offense.

Guess we got the defense part right.

I remembered who the Cubs unloaded Dempster to a few trade deadlines ago. I definitely was surprised at how rare some of those answers wound up being. Though I kicked myself when I realized I could’ve used Conine for KC/BAL and probably done better. I thought he would have been single digits as BAL/FLA. Oh well. Go Cubs.

Almost half my rarity was ROY x .300BA
Wracked my brain not to use the obvious Cinci ROY.

Poor rarity score and I somehow forgot the legendary Mark DeRosa played for both CLE and SFG.

New 8/1/2023: Rate stats (BA, ERA, etc.) do not have any minimum requirement. A player who went 1-for-3 in an entire season would qualify as a .300 hitter.

For two stat/awards cells: The player did not necessarily need to accomplish the stats/awards in the same season. For example, Willie McCovey would qualify for 40 + HR and Rookie of the Year.

This makes for some interesting and ridiculous answers for the ROY + .300 BA square.

Scherzer bringing that Mets magic to the rangers – 6 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs in two innings so far in his debut.

Tonight’s Reds starter, Luke Weaver, has already allowed 22 HR and if he had enough IP to qualify, his 2.3 HR/9 would lead the league.

The Reds are also one HR allowed short of the MLB lead, behind the Nats and tied with 3 way crappier teams.

I hope the Cubs hit parade continues.

    Rice Cube,

Was gonna complain about Happ hitting 3rd still, but lately he’s been fine…

Though it seems you could make a good argument for swapping him and Candelario.

    Perkins,

    Rice Cube,

Considering the quality of the Red OF defense, I can see why he was sent, but since the throw was the most accurate one w all series, it looked pretty bad.

I guess Weaver saw my preview up thread about his HR proclivity and decided just to walk guys instead.

BR lists Merryweather as 6’4″, 215#, age 31.

The only one if those stats that looks right when he’s on the mound is his height.

    As a reminder to me

    Rice Cube:
    Cubs remaining schedule, in order:

    4 v CIN
    3 v ATL
    3 @ Mets
    3 @ TOR
    2 v White Sox
    3 v KC
    3 @ DET
    4 @ PIT
    3 v MIL

    Then September rolls around

    4 @ CIN
    3 v SF
    4 v AZ
    3 @ COL
    3 @ AZ
    3 v PIT
    3 v COL

David Ross on Taillon, “I thought he pitched really well.”

I guess that’s how you say “He didn’t suck bad” these days.
