    aisle424,

They still do have them dress up like that? I thought I read something a couple years ago about being more sensitive. Personally, I don’t really care. it’s for fun and he looks hilarious. (dying laughing)

I think Ricky got rid of it, but Joe does what Joe does.

I don’t know why everyone is getting so excited, you can’t win the series with a manager who never played in the bigs. #fact #hireryno

That sounds right. I don’t know what the big deal is. Someone will be offended for sure, but who cares? It’s all in fun and nobody is getting hurt. Kind of like the guest locker rooms at Kinnick Stadium being painted pink. Who gives a shit?

Thank god we didn’t hire Ryno. The guy is literally a quitter. He’s done it twice in his career. That’s a record that won’t be broken.

It’s a shame that none of the rookies was wearing a corn cob dress.

    dmick89,

I mean, I get the idea that using feminine qualities to mock men is something that we should be aware of, but this isn’t that, imo. They are not only wearing dresses, they are wearing such ludicrous over the top princess dresses (that barely fit them) and it’s a funny visual.

So I don’t see the harm in this in particular, but then it’s a short road to insulting a guy for leaving a game with an injury by saying he has a hurt vagina or something. So I don’t know.

Yeah, the macho sportz culture bullshit bothers me. Stuff like this reminds me that for them it’s hilarious to be female. I’m not offended, but it makes me like sports less when I see stuff like that.

Yeah- I’m not offended, by any means, but it did get an eyeroll from me. Its actually part of a very old tradition in male-dominated public institutions. Up through the 50s and 60s you’d have “womanless weddings” at fundraisers in country clubs and talent shows and all kinds of similar stuff, where someone like the mayor and a city councilor or coach would dress up in drag and have a mock ceremony. Stuff like this was very popular in the south and midwest, where actual drag was seriously repressed and punishable by violence. Go figure.

So, not offended, but I’m kinda like “oh, that stuff again.” On the other hand, I’m also in favor of anything that keeps the team loose at this point in time, so whatevs.

I think intention matters and I don’t believe there was any intention to offend others. On the other hand, ignorance also matters and it can be rightly claimed that doing that is really nothing more than showing off a room full of ignorance.

So I agree with this. I’m not offended and I even laughed, but I’d prefer this habit end. I’m also in favor of whatever keeps the team loose, but as this team has shown, there are other potentially less offensive ways to do that.

/too lazy to find that TT comment about how Canadians aren’t offended by blackface because racism doesn’t exist in Canada.

    dmick89,

Agreed with all. I mean, would it be any less embarrassing for them to dress up in boy’s costumes or leotards or tights?

But as mentioned, the social media world these days gets too offended and worked up about this kind of stuff when in actuality, no reasonable people are offended. The media just screams “YOU SHOULD BE OFFENDED BY THIS”.

We’re in an era of hypersensitivity when it comes to how arms are handled in the big leagues. When Arrieta tossed a complete game to earn his 20th victory of the season 10 days ago, there were some who were concerned that the Cubs’ workhorse might have thrown 123 pitches unnecessarily, thereby putting himself at increased risk of injury. In particular, some observers I spoke to were bothered by the fact that Arrieta was allowed to reach that pitch count solely in order to be on the mound when the final out was recorded. – http://wrigleyville.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2015/10/02/maddon-reaches-into-the-unknown-as-arrieta-reaches-new-heights/

Really? We’re still in an era where people are overly concerned about this when pitcher abuse (whatever that was) is as rare as it is?

We need an injury expert to weigh in on this, and to determine what in fact is objectively hot.

I hadn’t looked at BP’s Adjusted Standings for awhile because there was really no reason to check out their standings and playoff odds report. Saw the bookmark and went there. Cubs are tops in the division and 2nd in the NL in 3rd order winning percentage behind the Dodgers. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/standings/

I hadn’t realized that Reds were now in Phillies W-L territory. I guess starting 50 straight rookie pitchers will do it.

    To day’s base ball squadron

    Fowler
    Schwarber (RF)
    Bryant (LF)
    Rizzo
    Castro
    Montero
    Russell
    Arrieta
    La Stella

Could be what we see on Wed.

I really liked that article, even though there’s not too much that most in-tune logical baseball fans didn’t know already. Unfortunately, this article probably doesn’t reach the audience that needs to read it most.

It’s possible that the “observers” he spoke to were other beat writers, always on the lookout for an easy narrative.

Hey guys, remember that movie where Jim Belushi breaks out of prison to watch the Cubs play in the playoffs or World Series or something?

    That was pretty radical.

And outside of the fans, being mobbed by his teammates will be a lasting memory for Arrieta.

“Those are the kinds of moments you live for in this game,” Arrieta reflected

Makes a lot of sense to me. These guys area already making millions. They need other goals and prizes.

I just spent 20 minutes watching Cubs Playoff Hype videos on YouTube. You should probably only watch 1, as they all have basically the same clips.

It was a good article, but as you said, it’s not going to reach the audience that is in need of reading it. I’d just feel better if this topic was left alone until it becomes apparent there’s a misuse of pitchers. That’s just not the case anymore and if anything, baseball has gone too far in the other direction in an effort to appease those worried about pitch counts. Not that I’m advocating 130 pitch starts or anything. I’m not.
