In the pre-game, Kap said he wrote a blog, “suggesting the Cubs move Starlin Castro to second base and put Darwin Barney, a natural shortstop, at short.”
What the fuck is a “natural” shortstop and why wouldn’t Castro qualify as one as well? If he thinks Barney is a better defensive SS, then say so, he’s not somehow “naturally” more qualified to play there. I should have known better than to turn on Comcast before the game began.

That’s exactly what I thought. We’re going to hear more of this. Quade was asked about it in the dugout before the game and he said absolutely not. I’m glad he gave it no credence but it also means that some trollish little dickhead beat writer has latched onto Kap’s BS.

Barney is older and probably more consistent at short, right now. But, I will hazard to guess that he doesn’t possess the range or arm that Castro does. Castro has the higher ceiling at SS and to me it’s way too soon to be moving him elsewhere. I believe Castro’s desire to play SS should be given credence since he’s the only player on your team who really matters going forward.

He was dead serious. Said he wrote it on his blog and someone asked Quade about it in the dugout before the game. They rolled the tape and then Kap said again that he thinks Barney is a “natural” SS who has played there in college and should go back to short.

The defensive adjustment for WAR is .75 for SS and .25 for 2B, so it’s half a win over 700 plate appearances. However, a SS would be 5 runs better on defense so he wouldn’t be any less valuable at 2nd. I just don’t see why you’d move him to 2nd base when he’s the youngest person in the league. Just doesn’t make any sense, which is exactly why the headlines will soon read: Castro moves to 2nd, Barney takes over SS.

Zambrano’s 89 mph fastball isn’t long for any rotation. You can get by with that velocity if you throw strikes, but Zambrano can’t. He makes too many mistakes (see Upton, Justin) because he doesn’t have very good control and that fastball is worthless.

Pretty classic Angelo DT pick, and, to be fair to JA, he’s had a lot of success over the years picking out good DT talent for the Cover-2. Paea is a bit light, but he’s really strong, plays with good leverage and has a very quick first step. Skill-wise, similar to Anthony Adams, but not nearly as bulky. He’s got the frame of a pass-rushing DT, but he’s very strong vs. the run.

Ok, everyone, shut up and look at me. Welcome to Visions of Nature. This room has several paintings in it. Some are big and some are small. People did them and they are here now. I believe that after this is over they will be hung in government buildings. Why the government is involved in an art show is beyond me. I also think it’s pointless for a human to paint scenes of nature when they could just go outside and stand in it. Anyway, please do not misinterpret the fact that I am talking right now as genuine interest in art and attempt to discuss it with me further. End of speech.

Mish, I’m wondering what you’ve heard people say they consider or think fish is. I grew up in the Midwest where fish isn’t nearly as popular as other parts of the country. I didn’t know anyone who didn’t consider it meat. If you went up to someone in Iowa and asked them what meat they wanted for dinner they’d immediately think about beef, pork, chicken, and fish. Iowa is like 187% white.

Pretty much every bar/non-ethnic restaurant in WI does a fish fry on Friday nights. Some places do a fish boil, which is surprisingly good if done right (you wouldn’t think so). And most places that do boils know how to do it well. They’re basically flash-boiled.

Miles was obviously trying to draw attention to the fact that McGehee was given away by the Cubs sine they didn’t protect him on their roster. It ignores the fact that not only did the Cubs have Ramirez at 3rd base, but also that McGehee wasn’t very good at the time. Through the age of 25 in the minors he had a career .740 OPS. Not bad, but there was no way anybody could expect he’d do has in the big leagues. If the Cubs kept McGehee and traded Ramirez while McGehee aged as you’d expect, we’d hear all about how the Cubs traded Ramirez so they could play this shitty 3rd baseman.

Maybe I’m nitpicking, but that stuff annoys me.

I agree, but trying to look at it from Miles’ perspective since he has earned the benefit of the doubt, I can see where he might be coming from. As a beat writer covering the Cubs for decades, he probably first met McGeehee when he was first signed/drafted in 2003, or the following spring. He probably knew him as a Cub during four or five spring trainings, and not just in September 2008.

I didn’t get the sense that Bruce was trying to sensationalize the tragedy of losing Casey McGehee, and while it may be a bit of a reach to call him an ex-Cub, as SK mentions, he was a part of the organization for years.

I thought it was a slight over-reaction on OMC’s part, and I’m not 100% sure why Bruce blocked him over one reactionary tweet, but that’s how some folks roll on Twitter. I get called an idiot pretty much every day on Twitter, so I can imagine Bruce and the other beat guys get it way worse.

Starling has always been considered a better baseball prospect than football prospect. He grew up playing baseball and considers it his first sport. He’s considered to be more polished as a baseball player than a football player. Something that couldn’t be said of Szczur or Shark.

Some guys that played both football and baseball have turned into pretty good players. Not sure why the fact that Starling is also a highly-touted football player should discredit his baseball playing abilities.

It doesn’t discredit his ability to play baseball at a high level, but when you factor in the commitment to Nebraska you’re looking at spending more money than you probably should for a high school pitcher. Then consider that whatever numbers he’s put up here in Kansas was against competition that’s not exactly up to par with that of California, Texas, and every other southern state. Seriously, the equivalent high school talent in this region is to that of 13 to 15 year olds in areas that are rich in baseball talent in this country.

It’s like Mark Pawelek. He put up silly numbers, but it was in Utah. That was another wasted top pick. I swear, the Cubs find out where the talent is and go elsewhere.

Not sure why the fact that Starling is also a highly-touted football player should discredit his baseball playing abilities.
i agree wih this analysis. He is extremely high on most peoples boards. If he got to us at 9 that would be incredible value. i mean i still want one of the college pitchers. But still this kid is pretty universally regarded

So was Josh Vitters. Baseball America said he was the best high school player in the draft. Better than Moustakas.

It’s also like last year now that I think about it. Cubs learn college pitchers are the way to go so they go to the worst fucking division in college baseball. It’s unbelievable how they avoid talent.

Starling is projected by most to be an OF. Also it isn’t like he doesn’t play against players outside of Kansas in all-star games and what-not.

And for guys like Mark Pawalek, you also have guys like Joe Mauer. Is there any data to suggest that there is a higher hit-rate on 1st round picks from baseball hotbeds?

Hey, do any of you know how the blackout restrictions for MLB.tv work? Can I watch a Cubs game on MLB.tv in Chicago, or do they black all of them out so you have to get CSN or whatever?

I don’t get your point here. Last year we all bitched because nobody had Simpson as a first rounder. Now we don’t care that a player is universally highly regarded?

I think the point about it being more costly to sign him because he has the leverage of the Nebraska scholarship is a fair one. But, if the kid wants to play baseball (which by most accounts he does) he will sign.

Starling is not my first choice, but I don’t think he would be a bad pick.

That would be my guess as well. So, I don’t see the problem with taking a once-in-a-decade talent from a place like Kansas or Minnesota.

Fair point. I’d stay away from him though.

I don’t think it matters much anyway. I’d bet if they do draft him it’s because he won’t sign for a slot bonus. Wasn’t it the Dbacks a couple years ago who drafted someone they knew they couldn’t sign in the first round?

if we fucking punt this draft pick in a once in a life pool to get an amazing talent at #9 i am done. I think you are being overly cynical MB which might be justified. But i see no reason for the cubs to be hot for this kid take hima nd then say fuck it.

What I don’t get is the Cubs finally do it right in 2009 and take Brett Jackson with the 31st pick. A college hitter with tremendous patience and in that spot you know whoever you take is going to have some kind of issue (his was strikeouts). He could hit for power, average, play defense, get on base and had a good arm. He’s tearing up the minor leagues. College bats are easily the best choice in the draft. If you get lucky with a high school bat they may turn out to be superior, but it happens so rarely it’s not worth considering. Take another college bat.

We’re going to hear 378 different names linked the Cubs over the next 4-5 weeks. We’ll hear 15 names on the morning of the draft. As we saw in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010, the Cubs with Tim Wilken rarely take anyone we were expecting. Vitters was the only one in his tenure that was often linked to the Cubs. Two of the top picks nobody even had in their top 150. My guess is that we’ll once again see the Cubs take someone that wasn’t linked to them. Probably someone ranked no higher than the 20s or 30s.
