OSS: They’re only Mostly Dead

Three up:

  1. Kyle Hendricks stepped up and had his best outing on the season, taking a no hitter deep into the eighth inning. Stroman’s complete game shutout of the Rays was the best Cubs outing of the year but this is definitely a close second. I thought it would take a while longer for Hendricks to get back in a groove, let a lone that we might see a vintage Cyle outing anytime soon (or at all).
  2. Cubs youngsters Chris Morel and Matt Mervis hit badly needed homers. Both had been slumping of late (along with everyone else), but now that the team has dug itself a big enough hole it’s looking like the Cubs are giving a bigger weight letting them get reps. Morel also added a clutch two run single – hitting with RISP, who knew it was possible.
  3. Mike Tauchman made an incredible catch in the third inning to rob an easy triple from the shambling remains of Brandon Crawford. He’s no Bellinger but he’s the a cromulent fourth outfielder.

Three Eight down

The Cubs just need to add another eight games or so on the end of this winning streak to get back in this thing :/

Next up: The Cubs go for for the sweep at 3:05 PM CT. Hayden Wesneski starts against…someone. The Giants website lists Brebbia as the starter…but he was the opener today so who knows*.

*the Shadow knows!

This rotation, man. Maybe no one who you can count on to shut a team down in the playoffs, but if they’re on their game the offense really could be mediocre and win a lot of games. It’s such a tantalizing mirage of possibility.

It’s something to build off of which they can’t if they trade everyone, if this is truly a transition year for the better then they need to only sell Bellinger and a few others who won’t be around next year anyway

Pat Hughes and Jon Miller are going to trade places in the broadcast booth on the radio side. Kind of cool. Cooler than that last home run, at least.

Despite my comments on the podcast about letting the kids play, I’m coming around to the idea that Mervis should go back to Iowa. He’s had a chance to see what is needed to succeed up here. Now he should go back to Iowa and work on his weaknesses, then come back up and become a regular star, like Rizzo did.

His D, from what I’ve seen, is better than advertised. That’s a low bar, but still.

If this team could figure out not shitting the bed after winning the first two in a series, that’d be cool.

    Rice Cube,

There are going to be games like this, which is survivable. Seeing Happ and Swanson see a total of three pitches between them to lead off the inning kind of pisses me off.
