When God Was Handing Out Brains, Nathan H. From Omaha Thought They Said “Trains” and Got Out of the Way

In News And Rumors by aisle424305 Comments

I try to stay away from Cubs-oriented mailbags or “ask the expert” features because they often are littered with questions from people who should probably thank God every night that breathing is an automatic response, since if it wasn’t they would probably have a hell of a time learning how to do it.  I’m talking about people who make Todd Ricketts seem like an intellectual.

I’m talking about people you can keep occupied for hours by sticking them in a round room and telling them there’s a $10 bleacher ticket in the corner.

I’m talking about people who aren’t allowed to take coffee breaks because it takes too long to re-train them.

I’m talking about Nathan H. from Omaha, Nebraska.  Our friend, Mish, happened to point out a wonderful example of what I’m talking about from Mr. H.  Nathan recently took crayon in hand and scrawled out a letter to Paul Sullivan that wonders why people are always so gosh-darned down on a team that last won a World Series before the Titanic was built:

I am sick and tired of Cubs fans and Chicago people always being negative about the Cubs.

We’re positive about them when they are good.  2007 and 2008 were pretty positive years, Nathan.  You know why we aren’t positive more often?  They aren’t good very often.

When will Cubs fans learn that all the negativity contributes to the Cubs not winning? It has to affect players to always hear that they have no chance, doesn’t it?

Hey Nathan, can you think of a recent former Cub that has blossomed when getting away from the negativity of the Cubs? For all the angst about Mark DeRosa being traded away, he spent his best years under the negative umbrella of Cubdom.  Ted Lilly seems to be regressing out in L.A.  Ryan Theriot is still running himself into outs and making poor defensive plays down in St. Louis.

And while I hate Cubs fans booing the players for every perceived wrong they observe on the field, it isn’t the reason they mess stuff up.  Things go poorly on the field because the team isn’t very good.  Marlon Byrd isn’t first-pitch swinging after a four-pitch walk to the previous batter because of fans’ negativity. Jeff Samardzija doesn’t need a GPS device to find the strikezone because fans don’t like his guaranteed contract.  John Grabow and Koyie Hill would suck even if fans carried them onto the field while tossing rose petals in their paths.

Also, if you are a true Cubs fan you would not jump off the bandwagon after one week of the season just because it was not perfect!!

You can tell Nathan feels strongly about this because he is now using the double exclamation point!!  Nathan, I don’t know how old you are, but unless you are about 107 years old, you don’t remember the last time the Cubs justified the love, loyalty, and money that Cubs fans fork over to the Cubs on an annual basis. We aren’t jumping off any bandwagon after a week of anything.  We are pissed off that the Ricketts have thrown together a team that is less stable than a house of cards and gone about charging us for it like it is an actual World Series contender.  That means they are either liars or stupid and neither option makes me all that confident of the future.

We should have won the series against the Pirates if Marmol doesn’t blow the save!! This team has the talent, they just need to perform to their abilities and we will be all right!

Oh we would have won against the juggernaut Pirates?  That is your criteria of judging a good baseball team?  The ability to beat the Pirates?  Holy underwear, Batman.  You have set the bar so low and the team still messed it up and you still think the team “has the talent?”  I want some of whatever it is that Nathan is inhaling in Omaha.

What makes me really pissed is that Nathan isn’t alone.  Unfortunately, the Ricketts used-car salesman tactics are working.  They have successfully sold Nathan and many others like him that being a Cubs fan involves sticking with the team through its hard times, because golly-gee-willickers, they sure are trying and we just need a few breaks to go our way.

The team doesn’t have the talent, Nathan.  It doesn’t.  That is a fact.  Every projection system in existence says this team will struggle to finish at .500.  Sure, whatever it is that Quade did in the last month and half of 2010 could miraculously carry over and the Cubs could out-play their projections, but old players don’t do that very often and the Cubs are old.  So when we are “critical” of the team we love, the reason we get so angry about it is because we care and don’t want them to continue to be profitable through failure anymore.

What’s your take on what I have brought up, Paul? Nathan H., Omaha,Neb.

Surely, Paul will let Nathan know that what the fans think has little, if any, bearing on what transpires on the baseball field.  Maybe he’ll even do it a little more gently than I just did.

Paul’s complete unedited, unabbreviated response:

Agree wholeheartedly.

Being a Cubs fan is a cancer. It’s killing you and there’s nothing you can do about it. Sometimes I hesitate to make fun of Nathans across the world because I think they might be retarded. Either way, I followed the 08 Cubs religously and don’t think I’ll ever do that again. It was so fucking bad, I used to partake in the BCB game threads and actually had fun.

The stupidity of BCB is not as obvious or as irritating when things are going well. I know I’m bugged a hell of a lot more by Al and his stupidity while there are more things wrong for him to pontificate on. When the team is winning, we might not respect certain people’s comments and opinions, but what the hell we’re all just having fun.

When the team is losing like they did last year and like they most likely will do this year, the Pollyanna “everything will turn out fine in the end” attitude is annoying as hell, AND it plays right into the Ricketts plans to fiddle with revenue streams before bothering to overhaul the completely ass-backwards way their baseball operations are run.

It’s only “killing” you if you take it too seriously. Poor Nathan from Omaha seems to be one of those guys who takes it too seriously. If you’re not having fun with baseball – whether it’s because you’re getting your heart broken by a postseason flop or you’re getting angry at people who aren’t as blindly optimistic as you think you are – then what’s the point?

Sigh, I know. We were all there before.

I am actually enjoying this year because of my low expectations. When we lose it is expected. When we win it is cool. And it is fun to watch Castro play and develop. This blog isn’t half-bad either.

You have to know when to fold em. I have really low expectations so I don’t take it as serious. But when they have a good team and you start to hope that maybe they can make some noise, it pisses me off more than anything. But a day later, I’m fine. I think that’s what seperates normal people from BCBers.

Well, working to a point. But I bet if Nathan H from Omaha lived in Chicago, he’d be buying those Best Buy Packs up, while checking his waiting list status every day. And there are plenty more like him.

As long as the place has 26,000 or so season ticket holders, they aren’t exactly going to be hurting for ticket revenue. It just won’t be what they thought when they bought the team.

That means the tickets are worth negative $0.75 each; or 2) the face value of those tickets are $8 each, which means that a hotdog and a Bud Light is worth approximately $2 each. Personally, the negative 75 cents sounds more accurate (dying laughing)

So, you’re easily getting $160 worth of face value seats, 4 beers and 4 hot dogs for $40. That makes the per value cost of the ticket at negative $40.75 (dying laughing)

The biggest reason the average fan is disgusted is because of Sullivan and Whittenmeyer. I don’t believe the average fan is that upset about the team being unable to contend for what it’s worth. I think the avid fan is, but we’re few and far between. The average fan has always been the Kool-Aid drinking fans and what’s changed in recent years is that the Cubs journalists have gone from covering the games to creating the news.

Sully is a self-loathing midget. No disrespect for little people. I was speaking figuratively. He’d be the biggest Cubs homer if they’d have won the WS in 1984, 2003.. whenever. Just once in his lifetime. Bitter asshat, he is.

my point is most fans and the media would easily say Wood because he’s such a fan favorite as opposed to the ‘head case’ and ‘overpaid’ Zambrano. Fascinating, and Big Z isn’t even 30 years old yet. Some of it has to do with 2003 when the cubs were so close to the WS, but then look what happened. Wood lost game 7. What if Z had lost game 7? I feel bad for Wood because he was basically “cursed” with bad health throughout his career. What might have been never became. I still like Wood very much but I don’t think he’s that great of a pitcher and that’s not really his fault (at least I don’t think it is given the injuries). But my man-crush on Z is without shame.

The New York-to-Paris gag has been taken off of Google maps, but you can still do San Francisco-to-China. The route includes tolls and a ferry, and also two kayak trips across the Pacific Ocean.

Nathan H. probably should’ve used a kayak so he wouldn’t have been so tired.

If you asked people who had the better career they would undoubtedly say Zambrano. Most fans like Wood better, but they recognize that his injuries have really prevented him from being as good a pitcher as Zambrano.

NFL owners are the worst. They are raking in billions, in a sport that (a) has no guaranteed contracts; and (b) leaves the players virtually crippled for life.

Meanwhile, they think that they didn’t get a good enough deal last time the negotiated a CBA so they are using all different types of underhanded legal techniques to try to screw the players.

My nephew is a Yankees fan and A-Rod is his favorite player. He knows that some people complain about A-Rod because everything you read about A-Rod talks about that. I think he also has some friends who refer to A-Rod as a cheater, but I don’t think he really knows why. He thinks it’s all related to steroids, which isn’t even half of it. He just doesn’t know. Also, how many 12 year olds are listening to talk radio, reading blogs and the comments and really even paying attention to anything other than the wins, losses, and their favorite players? Being a sports fan at that age is so different than it is for an adult. My nephew claimed for several years he was a Cavs fan. He was really a LeBron fan. He’s now a Heat fan.

I was 12 years old in 1986. Sandberg and Sutcliffe were my favorite players. Maddux would soon join them. If Sandberg was traded to the Cardinals in 1986, I’d probably have become a Cardinals fan. I’m not from Chicago so my only ties to the Cubs were that they were on TV more than any other team. The Cardinals weren’t on as often then, but there was at least 80 to 90 games televised. No doubt I would have become a Cardinals fan.

By the time Maddux moved onto the Braves I had been a Cubs fan for too long and had too many fond memories of the Cubs even though they sucked most of the time. I did watch almost as many Braves games as I did Cubs games after Maddux was traded.

    Things are just different.

He’s 12 years old and I’d almost guarantee he reads as much stuff about sports as any 12 year old has.

Still shut right up.

But how little does it tell us? Should Indians fans be excited about this team? Should Red Sox fans be panicking? Is Matt Kemp going to hit .400? Will A-Rod slug .800? Will Jered Weaver strike out 300 batters? Will Carl Crawford hit .180? Probably not, no. But that’s part of what makes early season baseball fun.

Right. It’s also why tournaments like the WBC are/can be fun.

I was born in 1983. I really didn’t spend very much time on the internet until I graduated from college and started a desk job. I didn’t even become aware of sports blogs until about 4 years ago.

But, when I was a kid I was a voracious consumer of all sports media. I read all the mainstream sports media available and listened to talk radio. If the internet was like it is today, I have no doubt I would be reading and commenting on sports blogs.

I think it is likely that Nathan H. is an adult, but I wouldn’t doubt that a kid would write something similar to Sullivan.

Dave: All right now, son, I want you to get a good night’s rest. And remember, I could murder you while you sleep. It’s easy, son, all you have to do is be quiet and willing to do it. And son, I am *willing* to do it. And, I’ve got *quiet shoes*. Good night, son. Sleep well.

    Kevin: Daddy drank…

Dave: Oh, son! Son, how many girls called you today? Zero? And how many girls called you yesterday? Lemme guess — zero? Well, you know what they say, son. Zero plus zero equals FAG! Zero times any other number always equals FAG! Think about it, ya little mathematician.

Kevin: Daddy was a salesman. Daddy drank…

Dave:Son! Son, wake up! Wake up! It’s midnight Christmas eve, and I just wanted so say thank you, son. I don’t deserve this, son. I don’t deserve anything to be honest with you. I just don’t deserve this. [opens present] What the hell is this? Tap shoes? I don’t dance. I can’t dance, ya little bastard!

Kevin: Daddy couldn’t dance; oh, Daddy could *drink.*

Dave:Hey son, you know how you’ve been bugging me to go and get you a puppy? Well today after work, I went out and I bought you one. But on the way home, I got hungry and I ate him! I’m joking. I’d never buy you a puppy.

Kevin: Why didn’t Daddy give up drinking? He couldn’t. Daddy drank for the government!

[Son wakes and turns on his lamp, to find Daddy poised with his hands inches away from throttling him to death]

Dave: Oh, did I wake you, son? Geez, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up there. I’m just looking for my mocassins. I don’t know where…they seem to have disappeared oddly. Well, you just get a good night’s sleep. I’m going to go out and buy a lot of carpeting. You know what, I sell the crap, don’t I?

Kevin: Oh sure, I drink a little, but I’m not my Daddy. He was older and had children like me. Oh, I drink before I go to bed when I sleep; it’s not a drinking thing, it’s a sleeping thing. a drinking thing, it’s a sleeping thing.

Just putting out feelers. If OL and WR are their two biggest needs, there’s a really good chance there won’t be a player of value at those positions when the 29th pick rolls around. Might as well pick up an extra second or third…especially from one of the teams that might be desperate to move into the late first to get a QB.

It’s my opinion that the 29th pick is more valuable in trade to CHI.

That’s what the NFL draft is all about. At least it should be. It’s difficult to say this early, but DT, QB and CB look like the best value positions at No. 29. Because a lot of teams will be looking at QBs, which are overvalued, trading is probably the best option unless a player falls.
Good point and I agree in a sense. I think the Bears should always look to maximize their draft pick and whether that’s picking a player at good value or trading it for other picks or player, then so be it.
I thought I read somewhere that there wouldn’t be any trades during the draft if a new CBA were not reached?

I find it difficult to believe that Yellon is un-square enough to write that comment.

Hey M&M, the first game is 1:20 and the second game starts at 6 (Central). I think one game is on CSN and the other is on CSN+.

    Or what Mish said.

Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres Game One, Wednesday 4/20, 1:20 CT: Day-Night Doubleheaders Are Great!

by Al Yellon on Apr 20, 2011 9:00 AM PDT in Game Threads

Well, actually, that headline isn’t true. No one likes day/night doubleheaders, not players, not broadcasters, not writers, not other team employees; they pretty much assure a 14-16 hour day at work for all of those people.

Gordo said the second game might feature Fukudome at lead off and Castro in the 3-hole.

I’m sure Quade posted that in the clubhouse on April 4th.

    Question for the stat fags:

What’s an average BABIP for a hitter? I ask because you look at Ruth’s for his career and he’s at .340 and Bonds’ is at .285. Was Ruth lucky for his career or was Bonds unlucky for his career?
