Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have been busy

In News And Rumors by dmick89318 Comments

theo-epstein-and-jed-hoyerThe Cubs were having a rather quiet offseason until December 23rd when they traded Sean Marshall. In a span of one month they’ve traded Marshall, DJ LeMahieu, Tyler Colvin, Carlos Zambrano, Andrew Cashner and Kyung-Min Ha. All of them except Ha were on the team’s 40-man roster. A new front office trading current players is nothing new.

On July 5, 2002 Jim Hendry was promoted to GM. At the deadline they traded Darren Lewis. A few weeks later they traded Tom Gordon and Jeff Fassero. At the beginning of September they traded Bill Meuller. In November Hendry traded for Paul Bako. He then traded Todd Hundley. As the season neared he released former top prospect Kevin Orie. In free agency he added Shawn Estes, Ramon Martinez, Troy O’Leary, Tom Goodwin, Mark Guthrie and Mike Remlinger. The 2003 Cubs were significantly different than the 2002 team.

New executives tear bad teams apart and that’s what we’ve seen Theo and Jed doing. Let’s briefly go over the trades again.

On December 8th the Cubs traded Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu to the Rockies for Ian Stewart and Casey Weathers. LeMahieu and Colvin are more than likely nothing more than back-ups, but Stewart does have some upside. I wouldn’t call this trade a win for either team except to say the Cubs added more upside than they gave away.

The second trade occurred on December 21st, but wasn’t officially official until the 23rd. Sean Marshall was traded to the Reds for Travis Wood, Dave Sappelt and Ronald Torreyes. It was a great trade for the Cubs. Sean Marshall had a $6.5 million trade value and they received at least $20 million in value in return and possibly as much as $40-50 million. I still have no idea why the Reds would make this trade.

A few days ago the Cubs traded Carlos Zambrano to the Marlins for Chris Volstad. I’m not the biggest fan of this trade. I figured there was as much chance of Zambrano being a Cub next year as there was that I’d be the starting pitcher on Opening Day, but Volstad just doesn’t impress me. Aside from his 2008 rookie season he’s been pretty bad. He gives up home runs like people give out candy on Halloween. That’s not likely to improve in the hitter friendly Wrigley. He does keep the ball on the ground, but it seems every time it’s in the air it’s a home run. Let’s hope for a 100% ground ball rate. That being said, the money is a wash and the Cubs got something for someone who teams had little interest in.

Yesterday the Cubs completed a trade sending Andrew Cashner and minor leaguer Kyung-Min Ha to the Padres for Anthony Rizzo and minor league Zach Cates. I like this trade a lot more today than I did yesterday. There was very little chance that Cashner was going to be used as a starter and even if he did it’s not like we can count on him to make even 20 starts. He has become a relief pitcher at this point so getting an every day player who is much younger and has more upside is nothing but a good thing.

In the meantime the Cubs have reportedly maintained interest in re-signing Kerry Wood, but before they can sign him they would have to remove someone from the 40-man roster. The most likely candidate would be one of the three left-handed relievers with little to no experience. Jeff Beliveau was added to the roster this offseason so that’s out. John Gaub and Scott Maine are the other two so I would think one of them would be taken off if they signed Wood. Or they could make another trade.

At this point there’s no reason at all to keep Matt Garza. Keep negotiating with multiple teams as I assume they are still doing and at some point I expect them to accept the best offer. I also expect the Cubs to trade an outfielder as they have 7 of them on the 40-man. They cannot trade Reed Johnson or David DeJesus as each were signed to free agent contracts this offseason. There’s little to no chance that they would trade Matt Szczur. That leaves Marlon Byrd, Alfonso Soriano, Tony Campana and Dave Sappelt. I can’t imagine they’d trade Sappelt as he’s valuable simply because he’s a cost-controlled player. They’d love to trade Soriano, but is any team going to take him? He has almost no value at all. I’d bet that Byrd gets traded yet this offseason, which will open a spot for Brett Jackson when he’s ready to be called up.

The Cubs have built themselves a very good and young offensive core to build around in the future. Brett Jackson is only 23 and is already the best outfielder in the Cubs organization. Anthony Rizzo had a disappointing rookie season, but he still has a great deal of potential. At just 22 years old he has a chance to be a middle of the order hitter for this team for many years. Starlin Castro is probably better than both of them and he’s also the youngest of the group.

If this group can develop as we hope and remain prison-free, the Cubs have a very good offensive core. We may soon see a lineup that includes the three of them at the top. Brett Jackson has more power than your typical leadoff hitter, but he gets on base an awful lot. He makes the pitcher work and has a lot of 5 and 6 pitch at-bats. He has plus speed so he can move himself into scoring position without help. Castro is more of a number 2 hitter even though he hit third a lot last year. He could develop into a legitimat middle of the order hitter. Rizzo has the potential to be a number 3 hitter. I expect we’ll see a lot of Jackson, Castro, Rizzo combinations in the order in the future. Hopefully they can all develop into middle of the order threats.

There is not this kind of young and talented core to build around when it comes to the pitching staff though. Dillon Maples may be the best pitcher in the organization and he hasn’t even thrown a professional pitch yet. Trey McNutt is the second best. Both of them may actually profile better as relievers. The good news is that there are several very good starting pitchers who will soon become free agents so the Cubs can begin to acquire top shelf pitching prospects and add veterans for the time being.

I keep hearing that Rizzo had a “power surge” at AAA. It’s just not true. But as they are wont to do, the writers ignore doubles when talking about young players with power.

I think the last paragraph perfectly describes the reasons why the Cubs probably DO have some interest to keep Garza.

Without Garza, the starting rotation lacks anyone at all who could potentially be #1 or #2 starter. If they can’t get an almost-MLB-ready top pitching prospect back in return, there’s no real point in trading him at all. And as of now, I feel the chances they will be able pull off a deal like that seems doubtful.

Whether Garza is here at the begining is up in the air and will just be if other teams are willing to pay for him. I think Theo and co. want to trade him this offseason since the FA class for next season is simply daunting. Garza probably wont fetch too much value when compared to the likes of Hamels and Cain (FA next season) that wont cost clubs top pitching prospects. That’s why i think we will either trade or extend Garza this offseason or possibly during the season. Maybe im naive but I think this club has a chance to contend for one of the two wild card spots, or even the division depending on how things shake out, in 2013 and almost assuredly in 2014. Then again it will all depend on how these moves and prospects progress.

Also I think Chris “Big V” Volstad is gonna be pretty good. I’m not too well versed in the advanced statistics, but my understanding is that HR/FB rates usually come down to the league average and Big V’s has been abnormally high and that has made his stats look worse than they should project to be and his ground ball rate and BB/9 have been getting progressively better. I guess the important thing is that I believe he will be a better pitcher over the next three years than Big Z will be.

On another note i like the combination of Rizzo and Sveum, Sveum was the hitting coach for another lefty first baseman with a big bat if i recall so that seems like it can only be a positve influence

Thanks for the input — good to know. There’s something so infuriating about the Bears’ bull-headed stupidity and inability to acknowledge that they might be wrong. They’re positively Costanza-esque in this regard. And they seem like dicks, too — would you want to hang out with, say, Ted Phillips? Mike McCaskey?

It seems to me there’s a power struggle going on. Phillips and George McCaskey seem to want an outsider, but Ruskell is one of Lovie’s Guys, and Lovie wields a lot of power at Halas Hall. If I was a betting man, I’d put everything on the pressure to hire Ruskell coming from Lovie’s camp, and the resistance is coming from Phillips and George, who want to get some checks and balances back in place.

If he pushes too far to the point where they aren’t running their own team anymore, they fire him. This isn’t a situation where there are multiple championships or a Ditka-esque fascination to keep the fans happy. Hell, More than half the fans want Lovie gone anyway and would welcome it.

I don’t buy how that is possible. The only reason he is still here is because the McCaskeys like him. If he pulls a coup, I bet they don’t like him as much anymore and then there is nothing protecting him from the unemployment line.

Well, to my mind he’s a lame duck anyway. A new GM not named Ruskell will want his own coach. I have a suspicion that this is part of why this move was made. IMO, George is not part of the McCaskey family groupthink

Tebow seems like he’s football’s version of a pitcher with a weird wind-up. Guys like Dontrelle and Nomo were really good for brief periods, but they weren’t doing anything extra special, just doing it weirdly that nobody had seen before.

Then the leagues figured them out. The league will eventually figure Tebow out. Hell the Bears did for 3 quarters and then started playing off the receivers. Fast teams that can spy Tebow and keep his running in check will beat him.

He’s smart and has good vision and he’s tough, so he won’t crumble, but he is not a Top 5 QB. You have to be able to pass accurately to be a Top 5 QB.

Eh, I don’t think so. Tebow was one more shit pass away from getting yanked for Quinn at the beginning of the second quarter. When push comes to shove, I don’t think Elway or Fox gives a fuck.

But regardless of long-term efficacy the Tebow circus works in Denver’s favor as it buys them much needed time to continue to build the rest of the team. And since Tebow is the fans’ choice, they own what happens with him to an extent, so if/when he ultimately fails, it’s on them, they were the ones who fucking wanted him so bad. In the meantime, the Broncos can adopt a Ravens approach to building and go hard after defense and a playmaking young RB without spending picks trying to find a QB for the time being.

So really, Elway should be thrilled. He has the next best thing to a franchise-changing QB: a bad QB fans are willing to lay down in traffic for.

the two sides can’t agree on money or length of contract at this point, a major league source told ESPNChicago on Sunday night.

The Philadelphia Phillies are one team that is interested in the 34-year-old reliever, according to a report from ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnik on Sunday.

he’ll make a decision on where he will pitch next season by Friday, which, ironically, {(dying laughing)} is the day that the Cubs’ 26th annual Cubs Convention begins.

Wood signed a $1.5 million deal with the Cubs last season, leaving a two-year, $10 million contract offer from the Chicago White Sox and a one-year, $5 million offer from the Boston Red Sox on the table.

I’m not singling anyone out here, but fans in general, how many times do we have to be surprised by an athlete’s behavior before we’ll no longer be surprised? We’re shocked A-Rod used steroids. We’re then shocked when Manny is found to have used them. We’re shocked that Ryan Braun used them. We’re shocked about Roethlisberg’s alleged rapes. We’re shocked about Kobe’s. I don’t care whether Tebow is a good person or not, but charity work means shit about how good a person is. Might I point out a certain Second Mile program as Exhibit A.

Also, in a more real world example, I knew a guy who was involved with all sorts of charities, raising funds, and going into the field to help feed people and build houses. He adopted both a brother and sister from a poor country so they wouldn’t get split up.

He’s in jail now for misappropriating government funds. So anybody can do some shitty stuff no matter how much charity work one does.

Okay, so before we decide whether or not Tebow is a good person, I guess we need to decide on a definition of a good person. Or better yet, what defines a bad person.

    1. Does Tebow rape woman? No allegations yet
    2. Does Tebow rape boys? No allegations yet
    3. (And most importantly) Does Tebow do steroids? No allegations yet

So he definitely isn’t a bad person from what we can tell. Is he a good person?

    1. We know he donates his time and money to charities.
    2. Multiple stories have been told about how whenever he goes to play in a city, he meets with a kid from make-a-wish or something like that and spends time with them.
    3. He took a girl with a brain tumor to the College Football Awards.
    4. He has been said to encourage his teammates when they make a mistake (probably because he isn’t the best player either). This is different than a lot of QB’s who cry and moan when the receiver drops a ball.
    Etc. etc.

I don’t consider myself a bad person. I’m probably slightly above average. But Tebow, from what I can tell, is definitely a better person than me. And he doesn’t have that “holier than thou” attitude. He just is. MB, as you say, in a world of sports where athletes rape, sell drugs, fight dogs, do steroids, why not accept that there is someone that is going against the grain? Yes, it sucks that he gets so much media coverage and has such a crazy following, but I rather have that than hear about an athlete getting in a DUI accident or witnessing a murder.

But the point is that we can’t know this with the available information. That’s the only point I’m making. Sports fans do this all the time. I know more about my neighbors than I do about Matt Garza and I barely know anything about my neighbors. I wouldn’t ever comment on how good or bad they are as people. I’m hesitant to do that with people I know closely. The best I could do is say that I believe my closest friends are good people, but I also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn they aren’t. I know a lot more about them than I’ll ever know about Matt Garza, Tim Tebow or Starlin Castro. If I can’t even say that about my closest friends, how can I possibly say it about someone I don’t even know?

I accept that those people exist. I don’t accept that I can accurately pick which ones. As for the following, I don’t care. I don’t see a problem with it, it pretty much boils down to

    1. If you’re a public figure it’s risky to bring drunk women back to your apartment at 3 AM.

Anybody know if this girl is american? Of all the times I’ve heard Castro speak, he doesn’t have the best english. I wonder how they came to be together in the first place. It’s not like she was going over to have a conversation with him considering his lack of english. Or maybe the girl is hispanic as well. I don’t know. I just really don’t want this to be true and hope it’s just a misunderstanding.

Something that i think a lot of people are forgetting is that he barely speaks good English.. imagine going through a legal proceeding in a foreign language. Scary shit. That is why he is letting the lawyers talk

Everybody in the world understands that at that point you’re allowed to do anything. That said, he should serve a short jail term just for good measure. I think everyone would agree that’s fair.

guys again, he made a statement though his lawyers. Like everyone should. You let them handle it. He also agreed to talk to the police. He shouldn’t be expected to do anymore more than he is at this point.

Who goes to bullpen? Travis Wood? Maybe Randy Wells?

I like the 9 man rotation but IMO you need to let Volstad and Wood start to see what you have

To very briefly depart from my personal all-joke rule on the Castro case:

Castro has every right not to say a word, and people saying that he has a moral obligation to defend himself in the newspapers are idiots.

That said, staying quiet is almost always a terrible PR move, as is making the wrong public appearances when people are claiming the wrong things about you (even if those people are idiots). But whether to maximize your public image is ultimately a personal decision for Castro and a business decision for both him and the Cubs, not a moral one.

I don’t know enough about PR to know whether that’s good enough or not though.

Also yea building schools and hospitals in Africa is a turrible idea. Fuck that guy
I’m not making any claims about what work Tebow does on his mission. But this is another example of you focusing on the aspects of situations which support the beliefs you want to be true. After all, how do you know Tebow’s mission work isn’t culturally erosive.

As for Fuck Tebow, I don’t root of the guy. I don’t know if he is good or bad (I prefer more complex characterizations that reflect the realities of being human). He is probably a better dude than most but I don’t have much to support that.
he’s made a statement. Both through the lawyer and in the fact that the day the asked to interview him they agreed to do just that.

Just put yourself in his shoes- there is a months old allegation, you havent been charged and agreed to cooperate fully. What the fuck else are you supposed to do?
I agree with this. I don’t know what else Castro is supposed to do at this point. I don’t actually care that much about the Cubs Convention either. All we have at this point is a heavily redacted report that accuses Castro of wrongdoing. As I’ve said, I’m not optimistic this will turn out very well for him, the Cubs and more importantly the alleged victim. That being said, I don’t think there’s any reason for him to not attend the Cubs Convention. He hasn’t been charged. There is no grand jury report that makes you sick like the Sandusky one.
I think Castro should stay silent until the legal matter is settled. Let his lawyers do the talking.
I would. I’m not saying a single word that could be used against me. If Castro says he’s innocent that’s essentially calling the alleged victim a liar. If Castro says anything other than “I’m innocent” he’ll be called a monster.

Maholm is better than i thought. 7 WAR over the last three years. We will have the best collection of 4-5th starters in baseball.
