The All Average wOBA hitters

In News And Rumors by dmick89174 Comments

I was looking on Fangraphs at Starlin Castro‘s stats this morning and couldn’t help but notice that his .357 wOBA was almost entirely batting average (.330). It doesn’t really matter how you accomplish it, but I started to wonder about the difference in wOBA and AVG. I was specifically interested in batters who had hit .300, which is what we usually consider someone being a good hitter. Since 2001 there have been 367 qualified seasons in which a player has batted .300 or higher. Ichiro Suzuki‘s 2004 had the smallest difference between wOBA and AVG. He batted .372 and his wOBA was .379.

Three of the top five and four of the top six belong to Ichiro. Placido Polanco‘s 2001 had the 2nd lowest difference. Starlin Castro batted .300 last season and had a .325 wOBA. The .025 difference is the 13th lowest since 2001. This season’s .027 dfference would rank 18th, tied with 2003 and 2007 Luis Castillo, as well as 2009 Erick Aybar.

Ryan Theriot‘s 2008 ranks 30th and Mark Grudzielanek‘s 2003 ranks 35th. There’s not another Cubs in the top 200. After that we see Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee three times each and towards the bottom we find Sammy Sosa‘s 2001. The hitters who got the most bang for their .300 batting average is no surprise. Barry Bonds has the four top seasons in that regard (2001-2004). Jim Thome, Travis Hafner, Jim Edmonds, and Alex Rodriguez are also up there.

Seeing Ichiro with the smallest difference isn’t too surprising. He’s a ridiculously good hitter, but he doesn’t walk much and doesn’t have great power. I think it’s safe to say at this point that Castro is also a very good hitter, but probably is never going to walk much and likely won’t ever have much power. As pessimistic as you guys probably think I am about Castro, I actually compared Castro to Ichiro after only 6 weeks of big league playing time. That thought has remained there. While I think it’s still way too early to think Castro is going to have an Ichiro-like career, it’s certainly possible.

The two are more similar now than they were a year ago. Castro is probably less a free swinger than Ichiro is, but he also doesn’t have the speed of Ichiro. The similarites are fairly obvious.

  • Both have needed a very high BABIP to be as productive as they have been (.352 for Castro, .355 for Ichiro)
  • Neither has or will walk much. Ichiro has walked quite a bit more than Castro, but he’s also a lot older.
  • Neither player has much power.
  • Both of them strikeout relatively little.
  • Ichiro’s career GB/FB is 2.33. Castro’s 2011 GB/FB is 2.33 (1.9 career).
  • Castro has swung at more pitches out of the zone in his career, but very similar to what Ichiro has done over the last few years.

Ichiro has played tremendous defense in the outfield while Castro has struggled at SS. Their defensive value overall has been somewhat similar when you factor in positional adjustment.

It’s still early in Castro’s career. We only have a year’s worth data for him whereas we have a decade for Ichiro. Please do not think I am saying that Ichiro and Castro are the same or that Castro will be as good as Ichiro. It’s not at all what I’m saying. I’m saying the two are similar and it isn’t hard to believe that Castro could have a similar career. At the same time, you have to be an idiot if you’re expecting a 21 year old to put together a career worthy of the Hall of Fame by the time he’s 30 years old. That’s what Ichiro has done.

Josh Vitters, 3B, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI, K. Hitting .300 in May and up to .271/.311/.439 overall; I’d say be optimistic, but every time I do that he slumps again.

This team’s defense is laughable. They can’t get anything unless it’s straight at them and Soriano only gets 50% of those.

Kosuke made a low throw to Barney, who then made an errant throw to DeWitt, who couldn’t handle it and Z wasn’t in position to back up the throw so Reyes scored easily.

B-Ref and FanGraphs seem to separate pitchers’ WAR from offensive WAR.

Before today, Z’s pitcher WAR was 0.9 and his batting WAR was 0.1, which is pretty cool.

Yeah I see his average velocity has been declining for the last few years; the gulf between 2010 and 2011 just seems steeper than for any other year to year, which is concerning. He’s also throwing his cutter a hell of a lot more.

It would take every ounce of restraint to keep from junk-punching LeBron if I ever had the opportunity. Jail and the inevitable beating I would take would almost be worth it.

I used to root for him because he was trying to raise a dead city to the height of the NBA all by himself. Then he abandoned them and rubbed their noses in it and then acts like a child every time he does anything well on a basketball court or he is the beneficiary of bullshit calls.

I was surprised at how many people on the Longhorns board were against prosecuting a parent who does this. The support for this is that it’s not malevolent and that the grief over being responsible for the death of your child is punishment enough.

IMO, it’s clear you HAVE TO prosecute anyone who leaves a child in a car all day. If not, you’re basically legalizing the murder of children.

What’s the OV take on prosecuting in these cases?

I was surprised at how many people on the Longhorns board were against prosecuting a parent who does this. The support for this is that it’s not malevolent and that the grief over being responsible for the death of your child is punishment enough.

IMO, it’s clear you HAVE TO prosecute anyone who leaves a child in a car all day. If not, you’re basically legalizing the murder of children.

What’s the OV take on prosecuting in these cases?
I haven’t read the article, but if you leave an infant or child in the car you should absolutely be prosecuted.

Cubs 9, Mets 3: As mentioned yesterday, R.A. Dickey left this one with an injury. No word on whether there will be any rules changes about how pitchers cover first base on a grounder to the right side in the wake of all of this. For the Cubs, Carlos Zambrano pitched six strong innings and went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI on a cold day in Chicago.

    Nice snark.

Wait five minutes: Carlos Zambrano(notes) had himself a day, going 3 for 3 at the plate and pitching six innings strong to lead the Cubs past the Mets 9-3. But manager Mike Quade can’t stop talking about the lousy Chicago weather.

“Despite weather, it ended up being a lot of fun,” he said.

Uh huh. Carlos Peña hit his sixth homer since May 3.

“As the conditions improve and the weather warms up, there’ll be more of those ball leaving the ballpark,” said Quade.

Yes, good weather will make the Cubs go 20-7 in July.

The blogger snark is strong today.

Prison exists to rehabilitate criminals and prevent crime through fear.

I agree with the rationale that some parents shouldn’t be prosecuted for this. If I did it, I’d probably just off myself. Or start killing gang members until they killed me. I don’t need rehabilitation or fear of doing it again.

Some people throw their newborn babies into dumpsters. If there’s no punishment for leaving a baby in a car all day, it would “accidentally” happen all the time. Yet at the same time, people are going to kill/abandon babies all the time.

There are many shades of gray between those extremes, but the law doesn’t allow for that.

It’s definitely criminal negligence and there should be some sort of just desserts. That said, locking up these parents with violent criminals also doesn’t strike me as the most appropriate response. I’m not sure what I think, since I’m not a fan of how the prison system is used as a catch-all for all criminals when various crimes warrant different (or in many drug-related cases, no) punishments.

I think negligent parents go to resort prison rather than federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison.

Good Job Mr. Homeowner. It makes me happy that the last thought going through that punks mind was “Oh wow, that bullet really burns in my chest.” Too bad he didn’t live a little longer to suffer more and really feel the pain. And what is even better–the assailant ran off and jumped over the fence, leaving his carcass for someone else to clean up, not polluting the homeowners property with the pile of human waste that he was. Good riddance. Burn in hell you big mound of rotting human immorality. I hope it burns in your chest for eternity. Hallelujah!

Thats the first comment from that article.

It’s not a direct quote — so who knows if she really said this — and she is a grieving parent, but fuck you.

“How dare you defend your home against an intruder without trying to scare him away first?!”
Isn’t this why they have “trespassers will be shot” signs? It’d be pretty stupid for the law to not protect the people whose homes are being invaded.

For a parent like me, whose guilt and sorrow would be greater punishment than any prison, it’s abosolutely not an appropriate response.

For a parent who kills an infant rather than care for it, it’s an underwhelming response.

You’d think, but many states still don’t. Texas only did recently.

The problem is it would place too great a burden on our judicial system to attempt to distinguish in each case. Also, I doubt all cases fall under either extreme.

He eventually won because there was strict liability imposed on owners who kept wild animals as pets, but the court said the plaintiff may have been equally negligent for just not killing the boar. I’ve never understood that about our society. Someone is breaking into this guy’s home. He has a right to defend himself and the property. The guy caused his own death. If he doesn’t break into a home, he’s still alive.

Agreed. It’s even worse when it comes to Police SWAT raids (tangential I know). You can regularly see stories of cops performing no-knock, warrantless raids of “suspected criminals” (often petty drug users if anything at all) where SWAT teams barge in with flash bangs and sometimes guns blazing. When people naturally see men with guns barge into their home with no warning, the instinct is to shoot the intruders.

In scenarios like that, if the homeowner hits a police officer, he’ll get more than the full force of the law thrown at him, while if the illegally-entering kills the homeowner, he may get suspended with pay.

The notion of the home as your property and castle has gone by the wayside, most notably by the SC decision this week.

I don’t really care about the individual person who does or how bad they’ll feel. I don’t want the parent to be sent to a prison with the worst offenders, but there clearly need to be a penalty here and it’s not going to bed without dinner.
