“We play like a Triple-A team.”

In News And Rumors by dmick89220 Comments

That’s what Carlos Zambrano said. He did not call the players AAA players. He said the team was playing like a AAA team and I don’t know anybody who would argue with that. Singling out Carlos Marmol was probably too much, but as Koyie Hill said, he’s frustrated. This is one of those things that would be no big deal in another organization, but could end up being a very big deal in the Cubs organization.

Someone should inform Quade, because that’s how he understood it.
Someone should inform Quade, because that’s how he understood it.
I thought Quade handled it pretty well.

“He got ahead with his fastball,” he said. “Z critiquing Marmol’s approach? Right now, i could care less. Those are the things you go back and look at tomorrow. Marmol throws a slider. Everybody is always (ticked) when he gets beat with his fastball, it seems like.

“I’m just (ticked) when we get beat. Z pitched good. That’s all I know.”

That’s exactly how I want that handled. The question is how is this going to be handled tomorrow.

My impression of Quade’s comments was that, if he wasn’t defending Z, he certainly wasn’t jumping on the bandwagon of outrage either. he did defend Marmol, which I think he has to pretty much. Other than that, he mostly said “I’m not worried about it, I’ll let the players take care of that themselves.” (approx.) That seems pretty sane for a guy who says as much stupid shit as Quade.

The other thing Z has on his side this time is that everybody agrees. Even the people on BCB (even Al yellon) agree with Zambrano.

    What should happen

Quade gets asked about this tomorrow and he responds with something like, “That’s behind us. We have to look forward and try to put the last week or two behind us and get back in this race.”

If Hendry is asked about, he should say something like, “These things happen. It’s done and over with. Zambrano said the team wasn’t playing well and I think everyone agrees. Now it’s time to figure out how we play better baseball.”

    What will probably happen

Quade: I talked to Zambrano about it and told him he can’t say that stuff to another player. He’s apologized to Marmol and the team and now we’ll move on.

Hendry: You can’t do what Zambrano did in a Major League uniform. It’s not professional and we’ll deal with this.

    —————

I don’t have a problem if Quade says what he did. He’s right. I’d prefer he not say anything, but if he sticks to something like that I’m OK. Hendry shouldn’t even comment on this at all.

He was more upset with the loss and made a point to highlight Zambrano’s strong start. he also pointed out that Marmol is pretty damn good at what he does and after a mistake everybody wants to second guess.

I don’t think anything happens to Zambrano. I even think there’s a decent chance the Cubs handle this exactly as they should.

Some people on BCB even encouraging a dugout brawl. Zambrano is pitching well enough at this point and the most consistent starter on the team. The fans are going to be behind him for a change.

Z said what all the fans have been thinking when he made the AAA remark. This team is an embarrassment, who would argue with that? I’d like to think that management could just move on and let this die but they’ve done nothing in the past to make me believe that will occur. Zambrano is just plain wrong. The Cubs resemble more of a single-A team than AAA.

Where has Quade been through all of this? I’m so tired of, “the guys are trying.” The team sucks…and its nice to actually hear somebody on this team telling it like it is. At least Zambrano gives a *$&# about what is going on.

The Cubs suck, but if the beat writers double down on Z they’ll still run him out of town. If Z keeps throwing 7-8 inning starts he’ll get more sympathy but the moment he has a rough outing the writers will be all over him again.

Zambrano got it right, although his comments may be an insult to a few AAA teams. Unbelievable how the Chicago media refuses to come clean and call a lousy team a lousy team. It was evident before spring training even started.

Kudos to big Z on this one. Hill has no business in the Majors nor does Quade. Two days in a row you don’t pitch to Pujols and we do it–little league managers know as much.

And this is the second lame article by the tribune simply repeating the facts from the sidelines. You no longer own this team and its appropriate to rip this organization a new one for how they’ve prepared for and managed this season.

If I need a simple summary of events, I can get that on ESPN, Sportsline, etc. The media is being way too soft on this organization and should be leading fans to boycott this mess at the ticket prices they’re asking for.

Maybe Big Z can start writing for the Trib.

zambrano is right. this is downright embarrassing. i am glad someone finally had the balls to say what we have known for a while now. i try to be supportive of my team but it is really hard when they are playing this bad and not showing hardly any positive signs. i know the media likes to take turn people into bad guys when they make statements like this but thank you big z for stepping up and telling the truth. maybe this will wake up the rest of the team and get a fire lit under their sorry, underachieving butts

Almost every comment here agrees with Z: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0606-cubs-cardinals-chicago–20110605,0,765489.story

I think you’re right that the AAA remark is fairly common but not usually said by players about their team. It’s not right to bitch about throwing Theriot something other than a fastball but this is his 2nd consecutive start that Marmol has blown the save. I’m also pretty sure Z was wondering how Marmol could let the super singles hitter drive in a runner from first with a double. I wonder how many doubles R-The even has this season.

I think people would react a little differently towards Z if he wasn’t performing so well. He’s been pretty good and fans do appreciate his effort and desire to win. That being said, I think Hendry will try and trade him, which is the right thing to do. Unfortunately the Cubs have set a precedent that shows they like to trash guys on their way out of town. If they are smart they won’t leak their petty grievances about him or call him out about this and lower his trade value.

I don’t blame Quade for the season anymore than I blamed Lou for 2009 and 2010, but the fans sure do. The fans definitely blame Hendry. We don’t even hear that much about Soriano anymore because of all the anger directed at those two.

Plus, the team is out of it so Z not performing up to their expectations won’t be as big a deal. The Cubs are going to have to significantly improve while Zambrano pitches quite poorly for a long time before he is the focus of the fans anger and frustration in my opinion.

I’ve been following Miles’ blog lately, and the commenters there generally blame Quade, but maybe blame Hendry more since not only is Quade’s presence Hendry’s fault, but so is Soriano’s and Rami’s continued presence. Also, while there’s lots of the usual mind-reading based ritual abuse (Ramirez doesn’t care!) there’s been a lot of complaining about how poorly this team does basic stuff: baserunning, taking walks, etc. Assuming that these guys are a fairly representative sampling, part of the reason Z is getting applauded for this is that he basically said what people have been thinking for a while now, at least since the Pirates series and probably since that big inning vs Boston.

Zambrano is right, but should probably be aware that 1/2 of the roster was in the minors to start the year.

If anyone should be happy about this, it’s Quade, because Z’s comments will distract the media from the real issue, which is him deciding to pitch to Pujols two days in a row in a situation where he can beat you with one swing of the bat.

He (Quade) said yesterday that he would “rethink” whether or not to pitch to Pujols, but when faced with the same situation earlier this afternoon, he went ahead and did it anyway.

That was funny. As I’ve said here though, I’d have pitched to Pujols. Both days. The only batter I’m walking to lead off an inning is 1999-2004 Barry Bonds and even then I’d only do it if a righty was on the mound and only consider it in the 9th or later.

Walk Pujols and the Cardinals run expectancy is about .94 runs. You’re giving them a run if you walk Pujols.

Walk Pujols and the Cardinals run expectancy is about .94 runs. You’re giving them a run if you walk Pujols.
Even Brenly said, at the end of the telecast “you can’t put the winning run on base in a tie ballgame.” And I understand that the situational percentages support this. But I’m not sure that those situational percentages take Pujols-vs-a-crappy-reliever into account. Maybe they do, and I can see the sense in it.

Yesterday seems a little different to me tho. there was already a runner on, right? so if you put Pujols on base then, he’s not going to score unless he screams down the basepaths and goes right through the other runner before that runner makes it home, splattering him all over the field.

Instead of .94 run expectancy, it’s probably 1.05 or something like that if you walk Pujols. Keep in mind that the shitty reliever is still in the game and he’s still a shitty reliever.

The overwhelming majority of the time Pujols isn’t going to hit a home run. You take your chances there and you accept that if you get beat by Pujols you got beat by an awesome ballplayer.

What happens if we walk Pujols and then Jay gets him to 2nd somehow. Craig gets him to 3rd and then Schumaker singles to win the game? I’d feel a lot worse having lost because we walked Pujols and let Schumaker beat us.

Hilly put down the 1 for fastball and Marmol shook him off. Theriot said he was looking for the slider. Marmol’s fastball isn’t shitty and I bet Theriot wouldn’t have pulled it into the left field corner, allowing the slow as molasses runner to score from first. I agree with Z that he should have went after Theriot’s weakness. Having said all that it was throwing Marmol under the bus and probably not the thing to say.

The fastball is as good a pitch as it is because the batter isn’t sure it’s coming. If Theriot knew Marmol was throwing nothing but fastballs there’s a very good chance the game is tied anyway.

I think the idea that so and so can’t hit a fastball is a bit crazy anyway. Every player can hit a fastball. If you can’t hit a fastball, you don’t move past low A. It’s doubtful you’d even be drafted.

From what the radio guys said, Marmol threw two sliders that didn’t slide before that. He got Berkman on three awesome sliders the day before, but if his slider wasn’t working, he should have given Ryan the heat, right? Marmol seemed stubborn, sticking to his slider in that case, so it seemed like a bad call, maybe that’s all Z meant by that. I mean the team just lost a close game leading to second consecutive sweep, how can the management really fault him for being angry?

Someone on my facebook feed made the point that in the first Marmol bedshitting, Z actually reached out and comforted Marmol. After this second one, I definitely don’t think Z called Marmol out by name but just by process of association, the media had their story.

I don’t understand how Z can be the bad guy in all this. He pitched 7 solid innings to keep the Cubs in the lead. Why shouldn’t he be angry? And the thing is, he didn’t even sound that angry in the audio clip. If that’s angry Z I don’t want to see what happens when he really does Hulk out.

He doesn’t have that much of a scowl and didn’t really raise his voice. Sounds a bit abrupt and terse but not that angry. And I definitely don’t think he meant to call out Marmol but he was correct in the fact that the momentum shifted.

I just don’t see how you can get 16+ paragraphs of hate per writer out of that one minute clip.

I still think it’s hilarious that Z threw Theriot 10 fastballs and then lets everyone know Theriot can’t hit fastballs.

If I were the other 29 teams, I’d start floating rumors taht they highly value certain4th and 5th round talents just to prevent the Cubs from drafting like a normal team (not that they need much help).

The Cubs couldn’t ask for a better draft day gift. Obscure their surely-awful selection with petty clubhouse BS.
mb, what’s the reason for having a .net domain as opposed to .com?
When we were talking about this site and came up with a name and a domain, the .com one was taken. I’ve always been partial to .net anyway. Another Cubs Blog was anothercubsblog.net and on one time (maybe even still) owned anothercubsblog.com and obviously own anothercubsblog.org (where the 2005-2009 archives are now). .com stands for commercial and I never thought of ACB as a commercial site. I’m actually kind of surprised that .com rules the domain world, but I guess it’s an example of people just doing what people before them did.

It doesn’t matter. Like I said, if .com was available this one would be .com. My personal preference is .net, but it’s not a big deal.

Some people will say there’s a difference when it comes to search results, but I have a very hard time believing that. Others say it’s not true. If you search Cubs in google in a clean browser the typical hits are at the top. BCB is on page 3 and ACB is the next Cubs blog and it’s at the beginning of page 5.

    Why are you asking?

The problem is that it’s impossible to determine which mid-round spare CHC is targetting.

Throwing a fastball was probably the best pitch in that situation. Oh well.

I guess this gets into game theory, but why have that much of an overshift if Tony Campana is capable of warp speed? Unfortunately I guess you can’t exactly signal the outfield to un-shift prior to the pitch because then Theriot pretty much knows it won’t be a fastball…

I think I’m more upset about this than normal because A) Z got screwed out of a win again and B) the media circus ensued because of it.

Why is Hendry even talking to these guys? Why can the fans realize these guys are just trying to instigate shit and drive Z out of town, while Hendry cannot? And why isn’t Hendry prepping for the draft? And why can Hendry not talk about shit like this with tossing a player under the bus?

I find it highly ironic that Hendry would decry Z as a bad teammate for trashing Marmol, while Hendry is trashing Z.

    I’ve had it. HENDRY OUT.

I was really surprised when I listened to the audio given that the words “blow-up,” “tantrum,” and “yelled” have been making the rounds. I actually had to turn up my speakers because Z was so soft-spoken. That was a very controlled, calm (and necessary) criticism of a bad team.
Why people the idiot hack journalists like Sullivan and Woj are so up in arms about it is completely beyond me.

I propose that WGC or any other season ticket holder, the next time Ricketts holds a “tour the facilities” event, should map the locker room so we can determine exactly which locker Z was looking at (dying laughing)
