Cubs Minor League Recap

Tennessee Smokies 4 @ Mississippi Braves 1

Chesny Young got off to a fantastic start, but has fallen on hard times lately. He was 1-4 against the Braves last night with a strikeout. His season line prior to last night's game had dropped to .297/.390/.363 with a .361 wOBA and 124 wRC+. Those numbers are still good overall, but they've come way down. Since the start of May, he's hit only .231/.313/.262 with a wOBA of .282 and wRC+ of 71. He's still walked in 10.2% of his plate appearances, but his BABIP isn't all that terrible at .265. I don't think anybody thought he'd maintain his hot April, but those are some ugly numbers.

Stephen Bruno was 2-5 with a strikeout and a run scored. Victor Caratini was 2-4 with 2 strikeouts and a run scored. Billy McKinney hasn't yet figured out AA pitching. He was 1-4 last night with an RBI and 2 strikeouts. He's hitting .246/.346/.309 with a wOBA of .316 and wRC+ of 94. Those numbers aren't bad at all for a 21 year old, but last year in 308 AA plate appearances with the Cubs, he had a .354 wOBA and a 116 wRC+. His ISO is half of what it was last year. I know McKinney hasn't played as well this season as a lot of people hoped, but I wonder if some of it is that he's not feeling challenged. With Albert Almora in Chicago, I wouldn't mind seeing McKinney sent to AAA.

Tyler Skulina helped himself at the plate last night. He was 2-3 with a strikeout. Skulina also improved to 3-3 on the season with 7 innings pitched. He allowed 6 hits and a run, walked nobody and struckout 3. Miguel Mejia struckout 2 in an inning and Corey Black picked up his 8th save. He pitched the 9th and struckout a batter.

Dayton Dragons 6 @ South Bend Cubs 4

Compared to yesterday when 20 Cubs reached base, this was a rather boring day at the plate. Their top 3 hitters (Donnie Dewees, P.J. Higgins and Ian Rice) combined to go 2-11 with a walk and 3 strikeouts. Eloy Jimenez was 1-3 with a double, walk and he scored 2 runs. Tyler Alamo was 1-4 with a double, strikeout and a run scored. Carlos Sepulveda was 2-4 with an RBI and run. The top 3 didn't do anyting, but the 4-5-6 hitters combined to go 4-11 with all 4 runs scored. Jesse Hodges drove in 2 of those runs on a single and he was 1-4 with 2 strikeouts.

Adbert Alzolay dropped to 4-3 with 5.1 innings pitched. He allowed 6 runs on 11 hits and 2 walks. He struckout 3 and gave up a home run. Greyfer Eregua pitched 2.2 really good innings. He gave up 2 hits, walked none and struckout 4. Craig Brooks pitched the 9th. He allowed a hit and a walk.

DSL Cubs1 3 @ DSL Rangers1 4

Jose Gutierrez, Richard Nunez and Samir Lara each had 2 hits. Gutierrez was 2-5 with an RBI. Nunez was 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI while Lara was 2-3 with a double anda  walk. Luis Hidalgo was 0-2 with 2 walks and Jose Rojas was 1-3 with a walk and strikeout

Riger Fernandez gave up 7 hits and 4 runs in 2 innings of work. He walked 2 and struckout 2. Jose Mac Donna pitched 3.2 innings, allowed 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 1. Juan Rengifo pitched 2.1 innings, allowed a hit and a walk.

DSL Cubs2  0@ DSL Dodgers1 2 (makeup of 6/7 game)

Fernando Kelli (CF) was 1-3 and Abraham Rodriguez (LF) was 1-3 with a strikeout. Those were the only 2 hits of the game.

Carlos Ocampo had a pretty good start. He threw 4 innings, allowed 5 hits, a run, walked a batter and struckout 6. Yan De La Cruz pitched the final 2 innings and allowed 2 hits and a run.

DSL Dodgers1 0 @ DSL Cubs2 2

Fidel Mejia (DH) was 3-3 with a run scored. Miguel Amaya (C) was 0-1 with a walk, hit by pitch and a strikeout. He also scored a run. Abraham Rodriguez (1B) was 1-3 with a triple and drove in both of the runs. Henrry Pedra (3B) was 2-2.

Faustino Carrera threw 4 innings, allowed 3 hits and no runs. He walked 2 and struckout 3. Ivan medina pitched 2 innings, allowed a hit and a walk while striking out 1. Jhon Romero pitched the final inning for the save and allowed a hit, walk and struckout a batter.

I feel like Eloy Jimenez is going to jump into the top 100 lists after this season and rise as high as #3 on the Cubs top team prospect lists.

    JonKneeV,

I’d say there’s a good chance. He’s currently 6th in the Midwest League in wRC+ and those above him are older (quite a bit older for the most part). His .395 BABIP and 6% walk rate are a bit concerning. If that BABIP comes down his numbers will fall quite a bit. A higher walk rate could help that, but at 19, I’ll take a 6% walk rate in A ball. http://www.fangraphs.com/minorleaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=11&qual=y&type=1&season=2016&team=0&players=0&sort=18,d

By the way, only a week until OV-CON 2016, taking place in Aisle 424. Get your mind out the gutter, I have seats in that section on June 17th so be sure to stop by Row 5 for your complimentary beer that I will forget to buy for you. I’m talking to you, WaLi, and , uh, Aisle424.

    SK,

I’ll be in the area, albeit 30,000 or so feet up. So feel free to buy the largest beer you can find for me and throw it straight up in the air when you see a plane. I’ll see if I can catch it. The folks in your section will understand.

Let me know if the login glitch happens. I’ve tested it with the way I could force it to happen and it no longer does, but that doesn’t mean it’s fixed. At least some of it is. Thanks.

Tickets are over $100 for that game! Even with my hefty cut of OV ad revenue, I can’t afford that!

I’ll see if maybe I can get out there for the game.

    Myles,

Based on my recent experience selling my other tickets from June 4 on Stubhub, prices will start coming down as the date gets closer. I had to sell my $85 tickets for $50 on June 3rd.

Would be awesome to see one of the OV VIPs…

kinda surprised to see jeimer candelario promoted to AAA although i’m pretty excited to see what he can do in the PCL.

Yeah, I was surprised to hear it too, but his wOBA and wRC+ were pretty decent. I’m excited to see what he’ll do in the PCL too.

If I was anywhere near Chicago, I’d try to stop by, but it’s looking like this is the first year I may not be able to go to a MLB game. I might try to get over to KC again this year, but tickets have been harder to come by there (good tickets).

Cogs has been pretty horrible for the Billy Beanes, but then I suspect he was pretty depressed to leave the Cubs in the first place. This should cheer him up.
