42,218 Cubs Fans Out of 42,219 Thrilled By Cubs Beating Yankees

In News And Rumors by aisle424329 Comments

I witnessed a fascinating thing on Friday afternoon at Wrigley.  Yes, the game was awesome and we’ll get to that, but the truly fascinating thing was getting a chance to see a real life Yellon interacting in its natural habitat.

Most people know that Al Yellon has been a season ticket holder in the bleachers for years, always sits in the top corner of the left field bleachers, and writes/edits/lords over the blog, Bleed Cubbie Blue.  People who know that about him might assume that he does those things out of a love of the Cubs or Wrigley Field or both.  But, from what I saw on Friday, he sure doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself very much.

I happened to get my hands on some extremely rare, and totally unavailable Cubs/Yankees tickets for the first game of the series up in Aisle 403.  That is the very last Aisle on the left field side of the Upper Deck, so we were sitting pretty much right above Al’s favorite seat and we could see him clearly as he diligently kept score throughout the game.

The first thing that I really noticed was in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Doug Davis had somehow miraculously managed to shut down the Yankee lineup and was going along with a 3-0 lead.  With one out in the seventh, Davis came up to bat, and a large part of the crowd rose to give him a rousing ovation for providing, what was to this point, the absolute highlight of the Cubs season thus far.  As I rose to applaud, I happened to look down towards Al, and there were his companions, likewise standing and cheering, but Al was just sitting there with his scorebook on his lap, looking like he may have been having some intestinal distress.

I thought that was odd, but I thought maybe I had missed him clapping briefly.  Or maybe he just plain doesn’t like Doug Davis.  I know he’s pitchng in the spot in the rotation that Al felt should have been Kerry Wood’s, so maybe he’s bitter.  I don’t know.  But it intrigued me that he was one of the few Cubs fans in the park not acknowledging the minor miracle we were witnessing on the field.

The game played on and in the top of the 8th, Davis got one more out and then gave up a double to Nick Swisher.  Quade came out of the dugout and as Davis walked off the mound, he got another even more rousing, well-deserved ovation from the crowd.  I again snuck a peek down at Al as I clapped and sure enough, he was sitting there scribbling in his scorebook.  He was probably writing in Davis’ totals, and as I mentioned, maybe he has something against Davis.  So what did I expect?

Marshall then struck out Curtis Granderson after a battle and the crowd loudly cheered.  Al quietly penciled in the K in the scorebook (presumably) with no other acknowledgement.  Then after a Texiera single closed the gap to 3-1, the atmosphere got even more tense.  Carlos Marmol was called on to record a 4-out save and he proceeded to strike out Alex Rodriguez swinging to end the inning.  No reaction from Al.  I had officially become obsessed with Al’s non-reactions.

When the bottom of the ninth rolled around, we were treated to a prototypical Reed Johnson circus catch that robbed Robinson Cano of extra bases and brought down the house.  Al just looked on.

Now, I was busy clapping and high-fiving my buddy and a few people around me after these events, so it is entirely possible that I missed some applauding or any sort of show of appreciation from Al that occurred before I remembered to look down there, but I don’t think so.  His companions were usually standing and cheering, while he just sat or stood there with his arms crossed or taking his notes onto the scorecard.

When Marmol struck out Chris Dickerson to end a victory over the New York Fucking Yankees by the hapless Cubs who have trouble beating the Houston Astros, Al’s reaction was some more scorekeeping and a quick packing up of his backpack in preparation to leave.  People around him were jumping, clapping, singing and plain rejoicing and Al was planning his quick getaway from his perch in the bleachers.

He just didn’t seem to be enjoying himself at all.  If I didn’t know better, I might have guessed he was doing something like recording barometric pressure readings for a science lab or something.

I was having a hell of a time as I managed to finally witness a Cubs victory for the first time this season.  If there were more games like that one, I might feel a twinge of regret for having given up my season package.  But there was Al, acting like a robot after a game that could very well be the absolute high-point of the season for the Cubs.

If this game didn’t get your Cubs fan juices going even a little bit, then I have to wonder why you would continue to fork over the kind of cash that it takes to own that season ticket package every damn year.  I have to wonder how he manages to pull together the energy to blog about what he witnessed when he doesn’t seem to care that he witnessed it.  He doesn’t appear to be savoring every moment.

Once again, I am just plain baffled by Al Yellon.

No cheering in the bleacher press box apparently. (dying laughing)
I was at the game yesterday too and I really don’t know how you could contain yourself if you were a Cubs fan. It really was an electric atmosphere late in the game, just as you describe. I know that it’s a lost season but it really was a lot of fun, all part of the emotional rollercoaster to .436 I suppose.

    More accurate.

I enjoyed the win, but I wouldn’t have been too disappointed if they lost. They’re now 9 games back but still have a long ways to go if they really want to get to the playoffs. I’m not sure that’s such a good thing because that would vindicate Hendry for building this disaster of a team (dying laughing)

I don’t have a problem with scorekeeping during the game, but I think Yellon takes his journalism and blogging a little bit too seriously and has forgotten how to just enjoy a ball game. Or maybe he’s channeling his inner Vulcan.

    From Ace:

    http://www.bleachernation.com/2011/06/18/larry-rothschild-love-carlos-zambrano-and-other-bullets/

Tom Ricketts roped off a 250-person section in the right field bleachers yesterday for Incapital, the banking firm Ricketts founded and on which he serves as Executive Chairman. It’s fine to buy tickets for your friends when you own the joint, but there is something a little unsavory about doing so in the first game of the very series upon which you based a new pricing tier for tickets this year. I can’t quite articulate what feels icky about it, and I’m the first to admit I don’t have all the details. Something about it, though, just doesn’t make me smile.

I thought the point of the bleachers was to mingle. If they wanted to be more private they should’ve used a suite or two.

Did you see this too, Aisle424?

Also, it sounds like there were a lot of Yankees fans in the park yesterday too. But the cheers suggest it was mostly Cubs fans which is nice.

The few times that the Yankees did something good the cheers were pretty loud but I expected it to be more Yankee dominated than it was because they have so many fans nationally. Maybe it’s because their colors aren’t as noticeable but it didn’t seem to me like they were as prevalent as Cardinals or White Sox fans when they play in Wrigley, even the Twins had a large vocal contingent when they last played here. There were a lot of Yankees fans on the street and hanging around the neighborhood so maybe they just didn’t have much to cheer about. I guess I expected NY fans to be more loud and obnoxious and I never got that vibe at all. In fact some of the Yankees fans by us in the park and those we met at local establishments were very friendly and talked about what a great time they were having in Chicago.

I don’t know why anyone would want to go to a sporting event and not cheer if their team was winning. I’m probably not like a lot of you in that I don’t go crazy or anything, but I’m definitely more animated than Alvin.

I didn’t notice a sectioned off part of the bleachers. What I did notice was that the bleacher boxes were kind of sparsely occupied, so maybe that’s what Ace was talking about. But there were a couple of areas that had a surprising number of open seats. Lots in the infield upper deck.

When my friend and I got there, someone was in our seats, but there were a couple of empty rows in front of our seats. So we sat there and just told the people that they were in our seats, but they could stay there as long as we didn’t get kicked out of our new seats. We didn’t ever have to move.

Yeah, I think its because they didn’t have much to cheer about. It really was a fantastic performance by Doug Davis.

Saturday will be interesting because I think a good part of the stadium actually was sold by the Six Pack plan, so it seems unlikely that many of those would fall into Yankees fans’ hands. But the season ticket people trying to get a bit of their investment back may have sold quite a few. This is probably the only game all season where getting tickets for face or less might have been slightly difficult.

Davis has a 3.43 FIP despite walking over 5 per 9. He hasn’t allowed any home runs, which likely won’t continue, but his control should improve. He’s not a bad pitcher by any means. He was as unlucky as some others have been for the Cubs early on. He’s not good either, but he’s OK.

I don’t know if Davis was getting any help from the ump yesterday but several times Yankees hitters were bitching at him. Swisher was particularly indignant at one point nearly bumping the umpire as he walked between the ump and Koyie back to the dugout. It really was a nice start by Davis, I was just a little surprised Quade didn’t start the 8th with Marshall.

Batters are not supposed to argue balls and strikes and when I see nearly every guy in their lineup bitching about called 3rd strikes yesterday and today it really pisses me off. Swisher probably should have been thrown out yesterday for the way he acted. I don’t know what he said but you could see he was being a real douche about it and went out of his way to get in the umps face.

This might have been part of the plan. Now they can save Montanez for another bases-loaded fail.

Considering your analysis of sending runners on 3rd, we now know why you aren’t even janitor. (dying laughing)

I think Alvin should have a different profile picture as he does not seem to have the emotional capability to facepalm.

I don’t really care what Pena did to Martin, but what’s so different about that than what happened to Posey? Both runners went in high when they could have slid. The only difference is that Posey didn’t yet have the ball and was in a terrible position (his fault) whereas Martin had the ball and was in great position.

To me there is a big difference because Martin was standing in the baseline with the ball so Pena had the right to run through him. Posey was not in the baseline and the runner launched himself out of the baseline and into Posey.

It’s made before he even starts running. I can’t remember the player for the Marlins, but I doubt he had any idea where Posey was. Catchers generally block the plate and on plays like that the runner is looking at the catcher.

Rules need to be established to prevent catchers from being in the baseline. If that happens, runners will start looking at the plate. Until then, they’re going to look at the catcher (that’s home plate to them).

I agree, though he probably should’ve waited for a better pitch.
