  2. Rice Cube,

For additional context, each of the previous two years they averaged over 40,000. We’re talking about a 25% drop in attendance over the course of just two seasons.

  3. And to go ahead and beat a dead Lou, you have to go back to 2011 (COVID years excluded) to find a year when they averaged fewer than 40,000 fans. They had sustained stretches of 42,000+. This is no small thing, especially since IIRC attendance across the league is up this year.

  4. Willson was always this generation’s Big Z. Hot in the moment. Circumspect later. Nbd overall, but he needs someone on the Cards to give him a hug at the moment, and Rizzo/Zo/Rossy aren’t there to do it.

Speaking of Rossy, I’m surprised he isn’t in the manager’s seat somewhere again already.

  7. berselius,

It’ll be a fun pod topic, because if the Cubs do something special this year they certainly won’t regret the trade by any means, but I have a feeling in 10 years a lot of broadcasters will be saying, β€œYou know Smith was actually drafted by the Cubs, and it paid off with a World Series appearance. But they traded for one year from a HOF right fielder instead of an entire career as a HOF right fielder.”

*I have made several assumptions in this projection. (dying laughing)

  8. andcounting,

I hope he’s good for many reasons, but I feel it should be noted that Cam Smith did his homers to the Crawford boxes on very very bad pitches by struggling pitchers, which obviously he should do and I don’t know what the point is anyway since they did happen

  9. Rice Cube,

Yeah, no, that’s not really valid, especially since that last homer finished off a 10-pitch at bat and both were pretty much crushed. But we’re not really evaluating him off of two homers either. He’s hovering around an .800 OPS as a 22 year old with more PA appearances in the majors than in the minors. The HOF prediction is obviously ridiculously unfounded but he’s pretty obviously going to be good.

  12. Added benefit of stealing a lot of bases is the influx of strikes being called balls when the catcher screens the umpire during the throw to 2nd.
