The Unfortunate Reality of Not Being the Best

77

I wrote a silly thing a while ago as the Cubs were trying to make their way back up the standings, and as we know from the late meltdowns the first two games and the beatdown in progress in the finale, the Cubs simply aren’t equipped to slay the monster just yet. As of right now, the NL Central is only mathematically possible but functionally gone, with only 15 games left and chasing what would be a 10 game deficit without the tiebreaker. The bullpen is bad, and for whatever reason, the last two starts by trade acquisitions Clay Holmes and Kevin Gausman have been very bad as well, and we’ve talked about the major home run issue plenty.

I think the Cubs will ultimately be fine and they’ll probably still make the playoffs, but it’s really rough right now as the team to the north has shown their ability to execute well while our team has not. Again, 15 games left to solidify a spot in the postseason of any sort, where anything can happen in short series, but it’s not very encouraging right now. The comeback tonight seems unlikely, so after the off day, hopefully the Cubs have some solutions to start racking up some wins again. Le sigh.

  1. Rice Cube,

I’m more frustrated that the defense sucked. The relief pitchers involved for Milwaukee would not have been in the game most likely if they didn’t have a decent lead, but the deficit could have been more attainable without those unearned runs. But oh well. On to the next.

  3. Rice Cube,

I get the semi-logic behind it, I usually have a like 24 hour window after an international flight before I crash. Though in that case if I were the Rams I would have arrived even closer to game time.

  4. The Astros are talking about moving Correa to 2B, and Trea Turner is unable to crack 1.0 WAR halfway through September….the Dansby deal is looking alright

  5. The Packers lost that game on their own merits but that Vikings drive to take the lead might have been the worst reffed sequence I’ve ever seen

  6. berselius,

    * Illegal Contact on a play where the pass rush teleported to Wentz so fast that his head wasn’t even up to look for recievers
    * Roughing the passer on a play where the DL correctly landed on his own arms to avoid the penalty like they are taught, to avoid this exact penalty
    * Obvious facemask by a Packers defender in the open field draws no flag after they’ve been throwing 100 of them all game
    * Pick in the endzone canceled out by ‘defensive holding’, i.e. a safety being trucked at the goal line by a reciever
    * Uncalled obvious false start on the 2pc
