The 2025 All-Star Ballot is Here

The Cubs texted me to let me know the All-Star Ballot is now live, so with the season barely a third completed, we have to once again choose who to send to the midsummer popularity contest, or else we can abstain and hope every Cubs player gets an extended rest. But it is nice to have at least some representation, and I think there are at least a few Cubs who deserve to make it to Atlanta this year. There were rumors that the Cubs would host the game decades after their last hosting duties in 2027, but the team has to deny this until MLB makes an official announcement.

Anyway, for this season in Atlanta, I anticipate that there will be a few Cubs who get substantial votes, most notably Pete Crow-Armstrong, who trails only Aaron Judge in WAR in the majors and is second behind Seiya Suzuki (who’s tied with reluctant-ish DH Rafael Devers) in RBIs. PCA most likely gets a ton of votes and probably has enough of a fan base to get him a starting spot at this point, while Seiya might find it a bit tough to break through although he would likely have the entire country of Japan behind him, at least those not voting for Shohei Ohtani.

The other obvious choice might be Kyle Tucker, who’s quietly putting together a strong season, but the surprise might be Michael Busch, who seems to have risen up the leaderboards at first base. I don’t know that any of the pitchers have stood out really, but I imagine the coaches and players will select one or two. But right now, I think PCA is the only true lock to represent the Cubs in the All-Star Game, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least two other Cubs join him.

Probably by necessity with Tucker needing another day off, but it’s cool to see Busch get a chance against a tough LHP

Before you look at the ballot, how many Rockies, Marlins, Rays, and White Sox nominees can you guess?

I might be able to name 4, total.

Not sure MB can really overcome stellar seasons by Freddie Freeman and Pete Alonzo, but you could make a case for Nico at 2b and Carson Kelly. Brendan Donovan and, arguably, Tommy Edman have better numbers, but Nico plays better D then either of them and only trails in RBI by a NL 2b by one (Edman). Will Smith is probably the right choice at C, but Kelly has a higher OPS and more homers. Hunter Goodman (the one Rocky I could name) has better numbers, but is playing much of his time in the OF.

    Rice Cube,

Or how much the official statistics can be trusted (dying laughing). IIRC there was a flurry of changes since they had to do actual measurements instead of teams self-reporting due to the ABS testing in spring training this year.

The Seiya contract is that rare FA signing that keeps looking smarter with every passing year. You love to see it.

Overall, I’m more worried about the Dodgers as competition than the Cardinals. #thingsiwillultimatelyregretsaying

Legit question: when these pretty obvious missed calls are being upheld but not confirmed, should we be blaming Marquee or I suppose both TV production crews? I mean, the replay headquarters isn’t seeing conclusive evidence, and I’m assuming they’re seeing video feeds from any and all crews shooting the game. So isn’t it possible the quality of a team’s broadcast crew ultimately affects the outcome of a game?

    Rice Cube,

I assume they’re also using the other team’s broadcasts – why the hell would they pay to have an entire extra set of camera operators.
