I don’t actually know if the legendary couple that does all the MLB scheduling on their spreadsheets and notepads retired or what, but the 2027 Cubs schedule is a bit wacky, to say the least. This has been out for a few but I had to work so you’ll get some thoughts now. All MLB has been released, pending any adjustments because of CBA shenanigans, but we’ll just focus on the Cubs here. There’s a general press release but they didn’t go into full detail, so I’ll do my best to elaborate on the quirks and silliness.

March

The season starts on March 25, with the traditional off day after the home opener at Wrigley. Three against Cleveland, then three against the Cardinals before another off day prior to a road trip.

April

This month might suck but the Cubs may avoid too much poor weather by having their main road trips out west (ugh). The first trip is to the Angels and Athletics, then an off day before their next home stand against the Rangers and Phillies. There are off days sprinkled through here, but the Phillies set leaks into an immediate getaway out west to face the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. Then another off day before a home stand against the Pirates and Brewers before another road trip…

May

The road trip actually stated at the end of April after an off day following that homestand against NL Central foes, but it’ll be three against the Yankees in New York and then four against the Pirates before coming home to face Seattle. There’s an off day before a long stretch where it’s three at home against the Marlins, then on the road for three against Houston and four in Milwaukee, then home again for three against the Nationals. At least the travel from Milwaukee back home is short, and this isn’t as bad as two flights out west in a month. But the next stretch blows, as the Cubs finish the home stand with three against the Royals, then on the road for the Cardinals and Marlins, then back home for the Dodgers, then on the road again for the Reds (this leaks into June by the way). So in the month of May and leaking into other months, we have a 10 game stretch, a 13 game stretch, and then 16 games bookended by single off days. Who thought this was a great idea? Gross, what a grind.

June

We did talk about some of the June slate with the 16-game stretch ending in Cincinnati, which leads into an off day before returning home for the Rockies and Reds. After another off day, which should help, they won’t get any additional help as they have to fly back out west for the Rockies, Padres, and Giants. That’s a 10 game west coast swing, but the quirk is that weird double header they have scheduled in San Diego. This is very strange given that the Padres have two off days after that doubleheader before traveling to Toronto, and as far as I can tell there is nothing happening in Petco Park on June 23 or 24 that would necessitate this. The Rockies have the other scheduled doubleheader in July, also against the Padres, and right before the All-Star Game. I don’t know how the Padres drew the short straw on this to have two doubleheaders, or how the Cubs and Padres drew slightly longer straws to have to deal with this, but as far as I saw, no other teams have scheduled doubleheaders. At least they’re done before the break so everyone can rest and recover, but you’d think if something like this is going to be a thing, they’d make every team do it at least once!

July

…which leads into a four game set against the Cardinals, so seven home games before an off day and one final road trip in Atlanta and Detroit before the All-Star Break. The All-Star Game will be at Wrigley in 2027, so the Ricketts, at least, and MLB as a whole, have some incentive to not bang the season because of stupidity with the CBA negotiations. The season resumes with a home stand against the White Sox and Pirates, a quick road trip to Minnesota and DC, then back home against the Red Sox…

August

…the Red Sox series concludes at the beginning of August and then the Giants roll into town. After an off day, the Cubs go on the “road” to the South Side before going even further south to St. Louis. Then back home against the Rays and Diamondbacks, then another road trip to Toronto and Pittsburgh before coming home to face Atlanta and the Brewers. At least August is full of off days and none of these stretches are too long.

September

The Brewers series finale starts the month off before the Cubs head on the road to Cincinnati and Milwaukee, before finishing the NL Central slate with the Reds at home, which represents the longest stretch of games after the All-Star Break at 10. The final two weeks are out of division, with the Orioles and Mets coming to Wrigley before the Cubs end the season on the road in Philly and against the Mets. Between August and September, the off days should provide some needed resets along with the roster expansion, but as we see this season, depth can get tested in a hurry.

So that’s the schedule in a nutshell, and I’m unsure how much they can manipulate it if there’s a lockout and/or delayed start. Here’s hoping!

    Yeah, I just had to switch to radio audio. Cohen with Dempster was ok last night because Dempster is pretty good, and Zach was alternating announcing with Pat or something because Ron was out.

    Problem (?) with radio audio feed on tv is it is about 15 seconds ahead of video. It’s like Pat can see the future. Let’s me look up from commenting on discredited baseball blogs.

    It would be a big departure from tradition. They’ve never to my knowledge promoted from within for a play-by-play guy or analyst. My gut tells me they have a big budget for these positions and a) value the spots too greatly to go cheap with someone the fans don’t absolutely love and b) could never stomach giving Zach a big raise. (dying laughing)

    If you need a big hit with runners on and the game on the line, who do you want coming to the plate? I’m afraid all of our answers failed in the 9th and 10th. Kin, you might not remember because I think you listed the entire lineup. (dying laughing)
