Samardzija signs a $55m extension? UPDATE: Nope.

In News And Rumors by berselius15 Comments

All the baseball writers were apparently scooped by the ESPN coverage of today's Indiana-ND game.

No word on years, but $55 was around the number that we were kicking around as a good offer here, so at first glance that sounds good.

More as this develops. I guess he was attending the ND game and talked to someone?

UPDATE

I guess this is a false alarm. Who would have guessed that not everything you read on the internets is true? Still, glad to hear that the Cubs seem to have the right price.

*I literally read this news while opening up my Mark Prior's career memorial Stone IPA. I hope this does not bode poorly.

$55 million makes a lot of sense and based on Hoyer’s comments recently it seems they definitely want him around longer (and not shorter). I probably would have written this up because ultimately I think he does sign a deal for 5 years and around $55 million.

It would be keen if the Cubs actually get Samardzija to agree to an extension though. It seems like a good idea to keep what useful long-ish term talent you have. While there is probably a 90% or so chance that he never gets better, he would still be likely useful in the rotation for several years, and once that wears out, probably back in the bullpen again.
