Random Sunday Night Cubs Things

In aside by Rice Cube134 Comments

I’m currently watching the Knicks try to do something against the Pacers, who seem intent to give up their lead but it’s the Knicks so I guess that may be a challenge, just after the Mets beat the Dodgers. That means there is now a three-way tie for second best record in the National League between the Cubs, Mets, and Dodgers. If the season ended today (it does not), the Cubs would hold a bye. So that’s fun to think about with still over 100 games to play.

The Rockies also lost today, which puts them at 9-44 on the season. They played the Yankees pretty tough this weekend, even getting the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but this is not exactly a good team. The Cubs should definitely do their best to sweep when the Rockies come to Wrigley tomorrow. I know we want them to win the series at the minimum, but just like with the White Sox, this needs to be a sweep to really help them put some space above the Cardinals, who keep playing teams who decide to be useless.

I feel like as good as the Cubs have played they should have a few more wins than they do. While I’m also not confident the offense can keep hitting as they have and I’m fairly confident the bullpen will continue to give games away. I’ve only seen a handful of Brown’s starts, but I think he’s got late inning reliever written all over him.

I admit this is way early and it’s just a fun exercise/thought experiment, but it is fun, and these wins are banked now. The offense probably sputters at some point but I think overall it is probably more slump resistant than in years past because of the diversity of hitters in the lineup. You can’t pitch the same to a Happ or a Tucker or a Seiya and that’s before you even get to Busch/PCA/Nico/Dansby.

Re: Brown, the flashes in the pan make me think a long term commitment to starting is worthwhile, and helping him lock in early is critical if you want him to be an impact reliever in the interim.

    Rice Cube,

The combo of diversity of hitter types and lineup depth is something we haven’t really seen on the Cubs since 2016. I’m sure it’s way easier said than done to construct a roster like that, but it seems so obvious.

I’d be hesitant to try Brown as a late inning reliever until his command improves, but I think that’s his destiny unless he learns to command a third pitch or creates different shapes on his fastball and slider as Steele seems to do.

    Perkins,

It has been suggested that Brown may benefit from an opener, but his warm up and prep routines may be such that it wouldn’t affect him much either way, he just needs to figure out how to lock in early and stay that way

    Perkins:

It’s unlikely, but I want to see them give Tucker all the money. A PCA extension would also be great, but I kind of doubt he’s into it at this point.

It doesn’t hurt that the cubs have PCA under team control for years whether they extend him or not.

As far from ideal as the Cubs’ 3B situation has been, I’m kinda glad they didn’t get Bregman now.

It’s such a strange proposition to play the Rockies right now. Odds are, you’re going to win, but every day you run the risk of allowing them to collect 10% of their win total.

Shaw really has been great at 3B since his return. The eye test tells me he’s the best defender at third on the roster, so the offensive contribution makes the improvement doubly welcome.

Does Horton always have this much movement on his four-seamer? It has some nasty break tonight.

Just a heads up to any daily walkoff players of advanced age and/or depleted memory: Christopher Morel and Carlos Marmol are two different people.

Yeah, this one was super tricky. I don’t know how much I like this game, especially when it obviously recognizes I can’t tell my Morels from my Marmols. (dying laughing)
