    1. Amazing how not seeing just one guy on the roster makes me feel 10000% better (dying laughing).

Just don’t ask what the baseline is that’s being multiplied by that 10000%

    2. andcounting,

I liked your comment on the pod, that the purpose of the wild card was to prevent a case where e.g. some 100 win team misses the playoffs like happened under previous systems. An 81-81 division winner (or for that matter the 84 win White Sox being in the playoffs) bothers me far less than if e.g. the 93 win Yankees didn’t make the playoffs.

    3. berselius,

Indirectly I like the 81-81 team in the playoffs because I think it helps me will into existence my case against the ‘balanced’ schedule, and having more division games would probably make it less likely.

We would have had a contentious discussion about this because I love the balanced schedule. Although I was thinking about a post for a more boring day about how to realign when/if they expand to 32 teams. TL/DW: go back to AL/NL East/West divisions with 8 teams per division.

As far as scheduling, you could do it like this:
Interleague teams: 3 games each + 3 against geographical rivals = 51 games
Interdivisional teams: 6 games each = 48 games
Divisional opponents: 9 games each = 63 games

Yes, my ideal season involves 9 games against the Brewers, but that’s me. (dying laughing) But with a reduced likelihood of bad divisional winners (and yeah, every division champ would get a bye in this setup) you could play more divisional games if you really wanted.

    5. berselius,

Kershaw decision aside I wish NBC had all of the playoffs, their productions have been great all year. Big props for them not cutting to commercial to show the crowd cheering for Musgrove. ESPN would have not only cut to commercial but would have returned with a quick hit on the cowboys that horned in on his first pitch (dying laughing)

    6. berselius,

It was a pretty mild disagreement. Like, he definitely argued more than what is normally allowed, but I think Pete has built up a reputation as someone who just talks with umpires pretty respectfully. He reserves the F bombs for himself (dying laughing). When the discussion basically goes, β€œNo way, I swung this far,” β€œNo, you swung THAT far,” without escalating beyond that, I think you can earn yourself a much longer leash.

There was an ABS challenge in the last series where Bregman challenged a pitch and the ump said β€œAlex is challenging the strike call,” and I died laughing. I think he and Pete both strike me as guys who have such a constant state of conversation with everyone on the field that the level of animosity stays pretty manageable.

    9. (dying laughing) at the padres catcher dramatically framing the pitch downward AND challenging the call. He fooled himself! (dying laughing)

    10. Hitting a guy with a 100mph heater and then sending out the trainer to see if the pitcher is ok is some epic trolling. (dying laughing)

    11. Would the vibes have been worse if these were at Wrigley? I’m probably projecting but I think most cubs fans know what’s up with the pitching staff.

    13. What a weird season. I remain steadfast in my belief that this Cubs team had a higher true talent level than the Brewers, but it’s pretty hard to overcome the sheer volume of injuries.

    15. Perkins,

I’m wishcasting a universe that can’t really exist* due to decades of history/inertia/us-ism but I’d love it if there were somehow two trophies of equalish prestige, one for winning the 162 game regular season and a separate one for the World Series, kind of like the Premier League title/FA cup. If that were true I would (mostly) drop my balanced schedule complaints.

*doing a lot of said wishcasting for non-baseball reasons as well :/
