    Dreamcast 133: Hold Serve

    123

With only a week to go in the regular season, it’s time for another Dreamcast…

    • The playoff picture as the NL Wild Card race remains tight
    • The Cubs’ path to the top wild card, should they choose to seize it
    • Alex Bregman’s freak injury
    • PCA being historically awesome
    • The final week of games and chaos potentially favoring the Cubs

We’ll probably do another one when all 162 are played and the postseason bracket is finalized.

    2. Rice Cube,

My parsing of “hopeful to return in the postseason” is that it’s more likely he will NOT return, adjusting my vague expectations that he’d just be out this week.

    3. Last bits…

Cubs = 3 vs Marlins, 3 @ Boston (weather issues there)
Phillies = 3 vs Brewers, 3 vs Rays (Rays can actually clinch the division today though)
Padres = 3 at Dodgers, 3 vs AZ
      Dbacks = 3 @ Rockies, 3 @ SD

Brewers and Dodgers still in the hunt for top overall seed, Cubs win or AZ loss clinches a wild card for Cubs, but we want the Phillies and Padres to lose of course…

    4. Based on what I’ve seen from the amateur weathermen, since Friday is the best weather and Saturday evening becomes crap…Friday doubleheader, Saturday day game adjust?

    5. Rice Cube,

The fact that his eye is open is huge. I had two black eyes that got swollen to the point that my eye shut (never went to the hospital to get anything looked at). One was when I was ~9 after trying to catch a pop up an adult hit a couple hundred feet in the air (caught it in my eye) and the other was a year or two later from a bat (don’t warm up in the dugout, kids). Being able to play pretty much comes down to being able to see. He can probably almost see without a part of his cheek obscuring his vision. That could be days or weeks, it just depends on how the swelling goes. Being safe to play? That’s up to Bregman and his doctors. He seems like he would err on the side of “just give me a mask or a full helmet and I’ll be fine,” but who knows?

    7. Every team should be using their top starters “bullpen session” the way the Marlins are. Considering the bullpen issues the Cubs have, they should have been doing it for awhile.

    8. I know Craig was playing the platoon odds and then the Marlins changed pitchers, but Matt Shaw has faced nothing but RHP since coming in for Conforto, and it sucks.

    9. Within me are two arthritic wolves, one knows anything can happen in the postseason and the other knows this team has no pitching, fighting the lamest battle.

    10. (A third wolf that knows the team is cursed with freak injuries accidentally knocks a rock off the side of the mountain that somehow strikes the other two 30 second later)
