I’m not a full-on AI hater, I use it for many things for which it is quite useful, though I am relatively pessimistic about what it’s trajectory might look like in the medium term vs what the boosters seem to think mostly for economic reasons. A lot of stuff that’s now called AI has always existed in my field and newer tools for it have been great!

My ethical concerns are much stronger when it comes to AI art and music, but in this case and other things I’ve run into my biggest day to day complaint is just laziness. There’s definitely a use case for AI improving writing, presentation, etc, but most of what you see is just a byproduct of people using it to put as little thought as possible into something*. Every time I see a bulleted list with emoji/image bullets or some sort of impenetrable flowchart slide that was generated by ChatGPT (often with fun hallucinations of features that do not exist) I lose a ton of respect for whoever is putting it out there. Just taking the time to make the output not look like generic AI slop would go a long way (dying laughing)

*of course that also begs the question of whether said documents etc even merit existence, and thus the amount of thought put in to generating them matches the utility

In terms of query speed and summarization, it can be a really powerful tool, but every AI evangelist I’ve ever met has been either deeply unremarkable or a sociopath.

I would say that using AI to identify cancers or inform better treatment strategies is good, using AI to make art is bad, generally because you use automation to do mundane tasks so that humans can use that time to actually be creative…or so the theory goes.
