It was a bummer when the Cubs were eliminated from the playoffs, so we took a longer hiatus than usual before coming back after a pretty entertaining World Series to talk shop as the offseason looms…

    • The 2025 World Series
    • Stuff about how Shohei Ohtani is a mutant
    • Looming free agency and how to set up the Cubs for success in 2026

    1. The QO remains a possibility, but it depends on how much you want to risk $22MM or so to see if he returns to form vs the reward of bagging a draft pick

Rogers reports that it’s not yet clear if Chicago intends to extend Imanaga the Qualifying Offer. Recouping draft pick compensation for Imanaga if he departs would surely be attractive to the Cubs, and him accepting the QO may be preferable to having kept him on a three-year deal at a lower annual cost due to the short-term nature of the arrangement. With that said, the market has plenty of mid-rotation or better starters available this winter, and the Cubs might prefer to not risk Imanaga accepting the offer so they can reallocate those dollars to a starter they feel better fits their roster.

    2. berselius,

They could potentially QO Shota along with obviously doing same with Tucker, and the big trades don’t usually happen until either the GM meetings or the Winter Meetings, so we might be waiting a while

    5. For Shota the QO would represent like an $8 million raise from what he would have gotten if he had exercised his option. He would have to really want a longer deal to decline.

    6. Rice Cube,

It just depends what the market is for him. If he gets a better offer from elsewhere he’ll likely take it. Not sure who would pay that much based on last year, but you never know. The Cubs could also end up doing the same thing they did with Bellinger last year and trade him in a salary dump.
