Alas, the Cubs did not sweep the White Sox, but I think the by-laws suggest that by splitting the season series (and winning this one at Wrigley), they do get to keep whatever it is the trophy looks like these days. The first two in the series were of course Cubs victories of the walk-off variety, which is par for the course for this magical season (though not quite as black magic as whatever the Brewers keep doing, those assholes). Here’s all the walkoffs so far:
More recently, the walkoffs were contributed to significantly by one Pete Crow-Armstrong, who did a lot of crazy stuff already this season. Since the last time we checked in, if this straw poll reflects the current attitude of voters and fans and whoever else, then PCA is the shoo-in for MVP when awards season rolls around. PCA leads the rest of the Cubs by a mile with 7.8 bWAR, and is the leader across MLB as well on B-Ref. On FanGraphs, PCA leads Bobby Witt Jr. by 2.4 fWAR before games started today, and has over a win clearance on Shohei Ohtani even if you add both his hitting and pitching WAR. So even with the recent “slump” by PCA standards, it seems like it would be an objective landslide for Pete, though of course the Ohtani aura still exists.
Onward to Seattle, where hopefully the Cubs can destroy the Mariners to keep pace with the Brewers who will likely also destroy said Mariners. Kind of nice that the Cubs get the travel day while Seattle plays tomorrow before flying home to host them.
It is perplexing how the Cubs look so poor against alleged “subpar” pitching but sometimes baseball doesn’t make sense
