We were hoping on the last Dreamcast that the Cubs would make a sort of a run, and so far so good (albeit could’ve swept but for some dumb baseball things and the usual bullpen grumblings). As I revisited the preview I did before the season started (which still includes Japan even if we pretend that didn’t happen), I think that the Cubs are somehow even beyond the pace I had set because they didn’t fall too far under .500 in March, banked a win in April, and a couple in May. I believe I had hoped for 35 wins by the end of May, and right now the Cubs stand at 30-20, which means they have to go 5-3 the rest of the month to match that (albeit they will take a different route to get there).
The pitching requires a level of analysis I can’t really do, although the eye test suggests they’ve been holding the fort down as Shota Imanaga will work his way back by hopefully the end of June. Most of the time, starters have been pitching into the sixth inning (in particular Boyd and Rea being surprises and Taillon just eating solid innings), and the bullpen has done their job minus the occasional blowups that make us sad. But the offense has continued to hum along, with eight above average regulars and Nico Hoerner (and now Matt Shaw) climbing the ladder recently as well. The splits are promising, with a winning record of 15-10 both at home and on the road, blowing out teams more often than the other way around, even a winning record in those pesky one-run games, and while it is true that they probably could have won a couple more if not for bullpen meltdowns, they also could have easily lost a couple more if not for some clutch hits late. It kind of evens out in the end, and so far it’s evening out to a .600 record, which was my optimistic hope before the season and seems likely to happen with head-to-heads against the Reds soon, plus the woeful Colorado Rockies coming to Wrigley. The usual YCPB caveats apply, but I’m pretty sure we all riot if the Cubs do not win the series against the Rockies, whereas the Reds are in-division and could be annoying with some tough pitching matchups coming up this weekend.
With the Cubs having won the series against the Marlins and the Cardinals losing theirs against the Tigers (Cubs and Tigers meet in June, but Chicago won’t play the Cards until the end of the month because this schedule is nuts), we find the North Side Baseball Club with a three game division lead and 78.5% postseason odds, with similar odds to win the Central and about 21% shot at clinching a bye being a game behind the Dodgers at the moment and holding the tiebreaker. It’s a solid spot to be in on this off day, and here’s to a few more banked wins before the schedule toughens up a tad next month.

The pitching matchup this weekend is rough but maybe the Cubs decide they don’t care and go nuts anyway

I forgot which other player(s) this happened to but this is not the only incident thus far this season

In news that both sucks and blows, after doing various odd jobs and trying to “train” for this company I was working for, I was informed today that I wasn’t meeting expectations even though they told me to hold off on the primary task I was contracted for because nobody was available to really train me. I do so dislike it when expectations aren’t laid out, but I guess at least I got a few weeks of pay, but yeah, gonna have to find a job and fast now…
