Final Stretch Scoreboard Watching

We have to officially bid the division adieu as the Brewers clinched the other night, and for anyone lamenting this, the Cubs should have just won more games. Thanks to some early season success, while the wild card race is tightening up, the Cubs at least hold tiebreakers over Arizona, Philly, and San Diego, with nine games to go and the slim cushion over the Phillies.

Over the last nine, the Cubs will be on the road in Cincinnati, where the Reds are just playing out the string (but Dansby should be back), then at home against the Marlins who are on life support, and finally ending the season in Boston. The goal is to try to at least host the first round at Wrigley, but looking at the closest opponents…

  • Phillies have 4 against the Mets in New York, then host the Brewers for 3, and the Rays for the final series.
  • Padres have the finale against the Rockies before going home to host the Marlins, then go to LA for 3 against the Dodgers, before hosting the Diamondbacks for the final series.
  • Arizona hosts 3 against the Yankees, go to Colorado for 3, and then to San Diego to end the season against the Padres.

Before end of action but after the Cubs win, there is a half-game lead for the top wild card over the Phillies, two games over the Padres, and three games over the Diamondbacks to stay in the postseason picture. Since the Padres and Arizona play each other, we can pencil in at least two losses for one of those teams, which does help the Cubs’ odds.

The Cubs can take care of their own destiny and even if they were to falter a bit while the Phillies feast on a bad Mets team, you wonder if the last two series will help them out as the Brewers still have to lock up the top overall seed above the Dodgers and Atlanta, while the Rays are still holding off the Yankees despite a nicer cushion. The Cubs are very likely to make the playoffs still, but definitely need to keep racking up wins to lock in that home series in the wild card round. Good luck, everyone, and rest up well on the off day.

Are there any “Shohei is the MVP” people left?

I think they’ve given it up over the past few weeks. There was still some noise after the announcement he wouldn’t pitch again, but then he hit the IL and Pete kept on doing his thing.

  2. One game separating the three NL wildcard teams. 10.5 separating the AL wildcard teams and no two teams closer than 4.5. What a weird year.

  3. I managed to find audio files of the radio broadcasts for all the 2016 postseason games 👀. It’s strange to listen to them, so much seems the same and so much seems different. E.g. Grote is doing the pre/postgame, Len doing the fifth, and the playoffs of it all. But it’s still Pat and Coom and feels like a normal background broadcast.

  4. The record books say that the recently injured Mets 1B played 22 games across two seasons for the Cubs but I refuse to believe it. An AI fabrication if I ever heard one.
