Cubs trade Brent Lillibridge, Hisanori Takahashi and other notes

Yesterday the Cubs traded Brent Lillibridge to the Yankees for a player to be named later or cash. Lillibridge had only 24 PA for the Cubs before being sent to the minors. He managed a .042/.042/.042 batting line and provided -0.5 fWAR. The city of Des Moines is thankful the Cubs have traded him.

The Cubs also traded Hisanori Takahashi to the Rockies for a player to be named later. The city of Des Moines isn't thankful Takahashi is gone, but they aren't disappointed either.

If you were paying attention this past offseason, the Cubs all but officially announced they were ready to be sellers. I'm not sure how it's really news at this point, but apparently it's still newsworthy.

The Cubs are 13 games below .500 and 17 games out of first place in the National League Central as of this morning, so their stance is a clear one. Nate Schierholtz, Kevin Gregg, Scott Feldman, David DeJesus (when healthy), Alfonso Soriano, James Russell and Matt Garza are the names that figure to be on the trading block as the Cubs field calls, writes Olney. His piece also includes much more info on potential matches for the Cubs and which divisions may be the first to become active on the trade front.

I'm sorry, but Kevin Gregg is not really a notable trade piece. The Cubs got him for nothing and will get nothing in return for him.

However, the Cubs might actually get something useful out of Feldman and Garza.

The Cubs have signed 7 of their top 10 round picks so far. The Cubs are likely to sign first round pick Kris Bryant under slot, though they could go over by a little without penalty.

I’m sorry, but Kevin Gregg is not really a notable trade piece.

Are you suggesting that a closer with a career FIP and ERA over 4.00 isn’t worth much?

OK, that is just wrong. Why the fuck is Zonk doing PBP when Pat is in the booth? Is this because it’s the inning that Judd usually subs for Pat, and Pat switches to PBP? Whatever, that was one extremely lame call of Schierholtz’s home run. Such a waste with Pat Hughes sitting right there biting his tongue.

    @ Berselius:
So is it in Zonk’s contract that he must do PBP in the 5th even if Pat is there? Because I can’t see a producer making that decision.

    @ Berselius:
I would have thought it was in Pat’s contract that he gets the 5th inning off, not that he doesn’t have to do PBP. It just seems weird that he would be in the booth and not call the plays.

I don’t expect to ever get to the bottom of this and that pains me.

Other fine tidbits from the Stating the Obvious file today:

From the Cubs/Astros recap on Sportsline yesterday:

It was the first interleague matchup between the teams after 705 meetings in the National League.

I hope they wrote that when Houston played St. Louis, and Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati, and….

Jason Vargas, about his current injury:

“You always want to keep pitching. But at the same time I’d rather not have a blood clot,” Vargas told the Los Angeles Times.

I’d rather not have diarrhea. But I live in the tropics. I hope Vargas’ arm gets better without complications.

    I read that as

It was the first interleague matchup between the teams after 705 meaningless games in the National League.

Felix Dourbant’s strategy of walking the two batters ahead of Miguel Cabrera hasn’t worked out well.

There goes Verlander doing his not-pitching-well-when-I’m-watching-him thing again. If I were a scout, I’d say he has good stuff, but has never been able to put it together to achieve consistent success.

RtR should be the OV MLB at-large correspondent.

Seems like Verlander really hasn’t been that consistent this year. Which means he’s fallen to merely as good as Cliff Lee, I guess.

6th round pick Scott Frazier got full slot. I’m still expecting the combo of Garner (7th) and Wilson (8th) to come in at $50k below slot. If they don’t, the Cubs have thrown away all their leverage with Kris Bryant, because he could hold their first round pick next year hostage.
