The Sunday getaway game was at least enjoyable to listen to at work after staying up way too late for a disappointing extra inning walkoff on Friday and the unexpected blown save on Saturday. It also again made one ponder the MVP candidacy of Pete Crow-Armstrong as well as what to make of Ian Happ. This is a good time to show the only win of the series for the Cubs, and what an insane game it was.
With the last regular season West swing halfway done, the Cubs are now 75-56, six games behind the Brewers (who lost to Atlanta, barely) with seven remaining against the NL Central leaders and overall 31 games to go. The Cubs are also only two games up on the Phillies for the top wild card spot, because Philly forgot how to lose (seriously, six runs to walk off the Cardinals with two outs?) and about to face an Arizona team that is on the peripheral of the wild card chase. It is probably too early still to worry about who the opponent is in that first playoff round, and of course the Cubs have to get there first, but with the division being mathematically possible, they just have to stack the wins where they can get them.
Fun fact

Ben Brown –> pain in the neck (again)
Sigh
Rice CubeQuote Reply
So what exactly is Brown dealing with in his neck? Stress reaction at C5 is rather vague. I’ve had nerve impingement at C5/C6 for the last 20 years. I’ve never had a doctor describe it as a stress reaction, but the symptoms Ben has dealt with are similar to what I’ve dealt with. I can’t imagine trying to pitch. There have been weeks or even months I’ve been pain free, but there’s not a moment I’m moving around that it’s not in the back of my head that one wrong move and I’m fucked.
I used to love running. Ran all the time, but the pinched nerves eventually ended that. Took a long time until I was even comfortable going on long walks.

andcountingQuote Reply
It’s actually pretty crazy that Pete noticed the balk whilst creating the chaos. I’m not happy that the Cubs have been bad-lucked to death the past few days, but there are quite a few sneaky signs hiding among the ruins of just how competitive this team can be moving forward.
