The Cubs didn’t complete the sweep, but at least have a tie at the top of the wild card standings with tiebreakers against all the relevant teams for now. It is nice to have the season series against a division foe for once, and if the Cubs can continue to figure out their pitching while finding some extra offense, they might be able to take the season series against the Reds too. We shall see!
I saw at least one Yelich Brewers jersey (why) and a few Atlanta Dale Murphy jerseys since the Barves are coming into town soon (after blowing it against the Phillies, boo), but there was a good amount of Pirates fans amongst the sea of Cubs fans at home. I chose this game at the beginning of the season because I can usually only afford one game a year and got the cheapest seats possible to get into the park and grab the Sammy Sosa bobblehead, because that was the game with the best gate giveaway in my opinion (Sammy remains my favorite Cub of all time). The game was entertaining even if the Cubs lost, and it was nice to see Daniel Palencia have a good inning, though I had to pee in between him walking Oneil Cruz and striking out Bryan Reynolds (got back for the payoff pitch).
Anyway, here’s bobble Sammy in all his glory. Missed opportunity to have Sammy in the house to throw the first pitch or sing the stretch, but I think Roy Wood Jr did fine.

Coincidentally, I discovered there was a Vikings bar south of Wrigley and I think the fans there were very happy

Heck yeah the Tyler Colvin bobblehead
berseliusQuote Reply
berselius,
He doesn’t have a blemish where that shard of bat caught him once, but the Kyuji bobblehead does have what appears to be a TJS elbow scar

also hell yeah Gattaca

Last year my single bobblehead game was the Maddux, hope there’s a good one for 2027 (also an actual 2027 season would be good)

I was checking the stolen base numbers and was surprised that Pete (while not surprising he isn’t leading the majors or the league or anything with the current 36) isn’t that far away from the current lead of 46, which suggests that teams worked pretty quickly to restrict the running game not long after they increased their sizes for 2023…

Rice Cube,
The new school of shifting the target further off the base probably has something to do with it too. I think the league has objectively gotten more efficient at tagging out runners.

Three steals to go. Pete simply hast to get 40/40 during this series. The sheer improbability of 40/40 celebratory retribution is karmic.

So Pete today so far…
42nd HR (tied Billy Williams for most by a lefty Cub all-time)
37th SB (3 away from 40-40 season)
100th RBI (for the nice round number crowd)

I did look up the rule, if Kelly got thrown out at 3B Pete wouldn’t get the SB credit going to 2B, he’d have to steal third himself afterwards (dying laughing)
