Cubs 8, Phillies 4

OSS: Cubs go bombs away in a win at Philly.

Three up:

  1. Ian Happ had a big day, homering twice and drawing two walks which led to a .447 WPA on the day. He’s off to a relatively slower start this year but as RC pointed out somehow he’ll have 20 homers by the end of the season anyway.
  2. Happ wasn’t the only one in on the homer party, as Swandong and Busch also had solo shots, and Reese McGuire just missed jerking one off the top of the wall.
  3. Shoutout to the bullpen, who went 4.2 scoreless innings* on a day conducive to hitting to close this game out.

Three down:

  1. He redeemed himself somewhat later but it was rough to see Kyle Tucker strike out with the bases clogged against a pitcher that was clearly out of gas.
  2. The openers for the Rea and Brown starts in the past week or so worked great! Why not more of that?
  3. War Bear went 0-5 with 3 K’s in this one but it’s still a bummer every time we see him to remember that he got non-tendered.

Next up: The Cubs go for the series win at noon CT; Ben Brown faces off with the suddenly scuffling Jesus Luzardo.

    berselius,

I think they might be trying to see whether he can do it himself without always having an opener for confidence going forward, but this inning probably doesn’t matter with respect to that

I don’t get that send. Skenes is close to 100 pitches and Happ isn’t really fast enough to go first to home on a ball to left center.

Oh man, Pittsburgh got screwed on a terrible missed ball 4 call turning into a strike-him-out-throw-him-out DP on the next pitch. Youch

Ok, if Dansby doesn’t wait for PCA to steal 2nd and instead grounds into a DP on the first pitch oh wait nevermind. (dying laughing)

They commented on Kiner-Falefa waiting back on that play where the Cubs scored because he failed to get Tucker at the plate, but if he had charged that ball he probably could’ve drawn contact from PCA and prevented the run from scoring that way. Whatever the opposite of a heads-up play is, that’s what that was.

If I expected them to drop one this weekend, it’d be today. But this is looking like a missed opportunity for the Cubs.

I don’t mind the walk nearly as much as allowing the double steal with no throw after two failed bunt attempts. That’s shitty, lazy baseball. The walk that followed sucks too, but the non-competitive stage began a few pitches earlier.
