OSS: Cade Horton makes a solid debut

Three up

  1. Cade Horton made his well earned debut, and looked like he belonged. Aside from a belt-high hung slider to Brett Baty he had a solid night, and got a strikeout looking on his first batter. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him, and less demented fake smiles from Robothal.
  2. Dansby Swanson is red-fucking-hot, showing off his future Dad Strength with yet another homer today. Going into this game, he had posted a 1.176 OPS over his last ten games, including three (now four) home runs. You love to see it.
  3. Brad Keller looked sharp as the opener in this one, touching 99 on the gun and easily dispatching the extremely talented top of the Mets order to start the game. It would be tougher logistically but I’m wondering if he could be stretched out the next guy up if needed in the rotation. He’s been the best pitcher in the bullpen this year by a significant margin.

Three down

  1. It felt like Miguel Amaya was having an uncharacteristically rough one behind the plate, simply catching the ball seemed rough. Maybe Horton’s stuff is just that good though. His insurance runs in the eighth atone for those whiffs behind the plate though.
  2. Bullpen gonna bullpen, and Merryweather made things spicy by giving up Baty’s second homer of the game.
  3. Justin Turner is apparently an awesome clubhouse guy, but the Cubs will need to pull the plug soon, or at least dramatically scale back his playing time. .161/.269/.161 is not gonna cut it.

Next up: Matt Boyd takes on asbestos collar robber baron Griffin Canning at 11:05 AM CT. It’s a Roku game, so enjoy Pat Zach and Ron I guess. Or don’t. I can’t tell you what to do. (though I still maintain that Zaidman is better than Alex Cohen. Or maybe I just have Stockholm Syndrome at this point).

I really think an AI announcer would have a better sense of what emotions to portray during the action of a game than Zaidman has.

The Cubs offense has not looked as strong for the past week or so.

If anything this week showed that Mets pitching is legitimately good instead of just beating up on cupcakes good

    berselius,

Would say that most of the scuffling lately has been against teams that are allegedly “good” (and they probably are), so let’s see what happens when they play teams that are potentially “bad”

    Rice Cube,

I’m thinking more along the lines of the usual ebb and flow of offense etc, playing the Marlins and White Sox will help mitigate that some but no such thing as an auto win, even if the Rockies are involved.

    berselius,

Yeah I’m not counting on sweeps or even guaranteeing series wins, though obviously those would be nice. 14-7 sounds like a reasonable floor to shoot for before they face good teams again.

    Rice Cube,

I was even thinking yesterday that it sucks that the rest of the bench bats probably wouldn’t be that great of a choice either, but I completely forgot about the catchers (dying laughing)

I heard the Swanson bomb on the radio as I parked but missed everything after until now, glad the Cubs are doing well since the Phillies were useless today

I must have been unconsciously inspired by the Cubs fifth inning, went 4-7 with 3 RsBI and a circus catch as we swept our softball games last night.

Looks like Bob Minocqua had a setback, and will be back to the Brewers later than sooner, such a shame

    Rice Cube,

Totally different issues. Bonds and Clemens weren’t banned from anything. They were on the ballot. Rose and Jackson never were allowed to be voted on.

In that vein, neither of these guys are guaranteed to enter the Hall. No idea how the HOF will handle their eligibility.

    berselius,

And that’s the most words I want to put down about HOF discourse for the year, (dying laughing), we’ll see if I have any more to add in 2026.

Yeah that’s an interesting conundrum, they wouldn’t be on any regular ballot but they may set up a “Dead Guy” ballot group with the Veterans Committee later

Looks like they just threw Miller on the 60-day IL to make room for Mo Baller

Happ to 10-day (got 7 days left after backdate)

Buys the bench mob a week or so
