OSS: Dodgers bullpen, my beloved
Three up:
- Dansby Swan-dong hit a ninth-inning go-ahead home run to cap the Cubs late comeback following a rocky start against Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan. He went 2-3 with two runs, four RsBI, and a HBP on the day, and now has a .206/.349/.453 line on the season, good for a 125 wrC+. Not bad for the nominal ninth hitter in this lineup.
- Nico Hoerner had a masterclass of a seventh inning. He knocked in the tying run with an RBI single in the top of the inning, then had two straight incredible defensive plays in the bottom of the frame. He made an incredible relay throw to gun down Andy Pages trying to stretch a triple, and on the very next PA he made an incredible play deep in the hole, on a deflection off Busch, to the pitcher covering first to nab Hyesong Kim. You love to see it, and to know that he’ll be around for quite some time.
- Shoutout to journeyman reliever Ryan Rolison, who pitched three scoreless innings on the road against the back to back defending champs to save an injury-depleted and exhausted bullpen. Even aside from the injury situation I bet he sticks around for a bit after that one.
One mid:
- Tiny shout-out to Jameson Taillon, who more or less performed to expectations against a great lineup and was able to gut out five innings and “only” give up four runs. The mistakes count too yada yada but he mostly managed to work around trouble, and only gave up one homer. Aside from that how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?
Three down:
- I’ll always seethe about how much the Dodgers sound system annoys me, but it didn’t seem quite as relentless today, so I’ll seethe at having to hand it to the Apple TV broadcast instead for their sound mixing (dying laughing).
- It was a rough day at the plate for Seiya, who was the only Cubs starter to not reach base in this one. Given the heater he’s been on I’m not going to complain too hard though.
- He got the job done but I’m sure Counsell et al were shitting bricks that Corbin Martin of all people was the best option to try to nail down a save at Dodger Stadium. Maybe with Assad back in the pen it might be time for Ben Brown, closer, unless it looks like Daniel Palencia truly will spend the minimum on the IL.
Next up: Colin Rea takes on Roki Sasaki at 6:15 PM CT, broadcast by FOX. Time will tell if Roki’s resting Depressed Face will win out over Ian Happ’s resting Vaguely Annoyed Face.
Even though the 2016 team did the thing, the 2008 team is probably my favorite of my lifetime.

Maybe MLB just didn’t want them playing three national games in a row, but it’s wild that the Sunday night game is Angels-Royals instead of Cubs-Dodgers

berselius,
Though peak Arrieta, Cyle, and Dex are some pretty good Memberberries too

berselius,
Yeah the 16 team is my second favorite, and gave me the two best games Iβve ever attended (NLCS 1 and 6). In retrospect I wish Iβd bought a Hendricks jersey instead of a Schwarber one.
The 08 team hit at a major time in life for me (graduated college, got married, entered active duty) and brought a whole summer of dominance and good vibes. I really loved that core of ARam/DLee/Soriano, Carlos Zambrano is my all-time favorite Cub, and even Jim Edmonds made for a fun βunlikely allyβ story. That combination’s going to be tough to beat, even without a World Series at the end.

That offensive environment, what a time to be alive

Zambrano my beloved. It’s a toss up for me between peak Arrieta and White Castle era Marmol for my favorite single season cubs pitcher.
It took me a while to appreciate the 2016 team as a whole both at the time and in retrospect due to how unshakable my belief was after 2008 that they would be the best Cubs team I’d ever see in my lifetime.

It was also the year when the TOOTBLAN stat was coined, truly an annus mirabulis

Letβs not forget the TOOTBLANβs cousin, the RTAOBP.

That was me with the 2015 team. I wasnβt fully bought in until September of that year. I kind of expected the 2016 team to win 110+ until they had that mini-swoon in June/July.

Perkins,
This team of course will never lose again *averts eyes from bullpen*

I seem to remember 2010 as an inflection point for offense. Beyond the glut of no-hitters, I think that was around the time more front offices were embracing analytics than werenβt and the game started to optimize for three true outcomes.

Nico should see if Roki actually throws him a strike before swinging

Other than him shutting up, I’d like the Cubs to reduce the number of times they stare at strike 3

For all the criticism of the admittedly dopey things he says, the fact that he attempts to fill every possible second with chatter flies under the radar. It makes it 100 times worse.

This is still better than the WBC, his complete lack of interest in all the non-US teams was so palpable it made Hawk Harrelson seem like an even handed commentator.
