Home Postgame Cubs 3, Mets 0

Cubs 3, Mets 0

To paraphrase Michael Cerami’s much better article, the Cubs found some gumption after being officially eliminated from playoff contention to sweep the Mets at Wrigley. Nico Hoerner was the clear MVP of the series, going 4-12 with a home run on Friday and the walk-off hit in extras on Sunday. As of Sunday morning, Hoerner led the league in bWAR. You love to see it!

Overall, the Cubs scored eighteen runs to the Mets seven in the series.

Next up is a four game set at Wrigley against another flailing NL Least team, the Phillies, who are on a five game losing streak of their own and the Cubs saw just last weekend. The Phillies staff was just what they needed to wake the bats up, hopefully that continues. A quick look at the likely pitching matchups, assuming no one falls into a mystery spot or is arrested for every murder in the city of Chicago in the next few days:

Monday: Aaron Nola vs Colin Rea, 6:40 PM CT

Tuesday: Jesus Luzardo vs Shota Imanaga, 6:40 PM CT

Wednesday: Taijuan Walker* vs Matthew Boyd, 6:40 PM CT

*Taijuan Walker is currently sporting a 9+ ERA, but it sounds like he’ll be the bulk guy following an opener in this one.

Thursday: Christopher Sanchez vs Edward Cabrera, 1:20 PM CT

Imanaga vs Luzardo, so the righty load and shuffling makes sense

  2. Perkins,

I used Vlad, tried to avoid Rickey or Ichiro and the other obvious ones…but the team MVPs were a bit sparse because even if the Yankees and Red Sox won a bunch there are still only a handful across the century

My bottom row was Dawson-Phillips-Sosa and I used Rocket and Phil Rizzuto for the other two MVPs.

  5. Whoa, I was listening on the radio yesterday and didn’t realize that War Bear was actually playing on defense yesterday.
