I don’t actually think the players have set up a counteroffer since the last time, feel free to correct me as it’s been a while and I don’t pay attention, but MLB has released their next proposal:

  • Increase in minimum salary but it’s tiered by service time, at least it’s a raise but seems trivial
  • Offering free agency after five years for players over 30, which I wonder if that means they shave off the year once they turn 30, or the guy has to wait until they’re 35, either way it’s not really moving the needle a lot given how much front offices value youth
  • Getting rid of deferred money (weird since everyone seems to like it) but also they would allow a longer contract for teams keeping their own player, but there’s a caveat…
  • in addition to that Larry Bird rule, they’re also capping FA contracts at 5 years, 6 if it’s a re-sign with their own team

There’s obviously no way the players take this (it’s early anyway but come on), and of course they already told MLB to go fuck themselves in a very diplomatic way. Would be curious to see when MLBPA sets up a formal counteroffer, but it’s easy to see how entrenched ownership is regarding that salary cap and essentially cutting costs.
