Weirdly, Joe Maddon was asked two different questions about John Lackey in his pre-game press conference. Will Kyle Hendricks fly under the radar forever?

    dmick89,

Wind blowing out seems to lead to chaos. Leads don’t feel safe, lousy hitters become sluggers. With the wind blowing in, it feels as if the offense really has to earn their runs.

    Robot umps please.

For every gift call to the Cubs, there are several that go against them. I would take a Bryant strikeout that is the right call any day.

Montero vs. Miller? That’s the matchup Joe wanted?

No I bet he went to Montero so Francona would go to Miller and now Joe will pinch hit Almora

    SK:
He just wanted Francona to commit to using Miller early.

I’m surprised he didn’t sub in Almora. Joe is usually pretty aggressive with these things even with the threat of extras.

    SK,

He wanted Francona to go to Miller when the Cubs had their best scoring opportunity of the night? I think it’s just as simple as Joe needed a pinch hitter and Montero has swung the bat better of late.

I hope the Cubs can find a way to keep Cleveland scoreless through about 9 or 10 innings.

I’m going to blame you when they lose in the 11th

I would prefer that they make Miller work, get him fatigued, then light him up for a single run.

But then nobody cares about my preference.

On a night with the wind blowing out, facing an extreme flyball pitcher, the Cubs are on the ass end of a 1-0 shutout.

    Baseball.

God Damn Javy. In case you didn’t notice the first 10 high fastballs, the Indians are going to throw a high fastball when you’re down two strikes.

    JonKneeV,

I don’t really have a problem with the pitches Javy swung at in that plate appearance. i would have liked to see him take the kind of swings he was earlier in the postseason. He’s gone back to trying to hit the ball 7000 feet. The coaches should really tell him that in baseball the difference between 400 and 7000 feet is 0 runs. While they’re at it, they should also tell him that the ball doesn’t have to go 400 feet to score a man on 3rd base.

You give up one run, you should win. If you give up one run and barely had a chance to win the game, the other pitcher better have been Clayton Kershaw. If you score 0 runs against Josh Timlin Tomlin, you didn’t prepare well enough.

Oh well. At least tomorrow won’t increase my blood pressure like tonight’s game did. They’re down 2-1 and they’re facing their ace. I didn’t expect to win game 4 (or a game 7 if it went that far). Baseball sucks.

The curse of the Cubs never clinching a World Series at Wrigley continues.

Yes, the curse of Wrigley is alive and well.

Also, the curse of the wind blowing out.

Also, the curse of not great pitchers seeming like Cy Young candidates.

Also, the curse of no hits with RISP, and of many runners stranded, and of cheap hits by the opposing team.

And we mustn’t forget the curse of Schwarber’s epic narrative and lack of medical clearance to take the field.

    The Cubs are curses-ed.

    dmick89,

Just like they never made any headway against Kershaw in game six of the Pennant Series* and had to beat Rich Hill instead.

*They should totally rename the LCS to the Pennant Series.

I don’t hate their chances against Kluber tomorrow. Starting tomorrow, the Indians rotation is on short rest the remainder of the series.

It’s an uphill battle, but I say Cubs in 7. Or Dodgers in 5. It could go either way.

dmick89: If you score 0 runs against Josh Timlin Tomlin, you didn’t prepare well enough.

I find that so difficult to believe, but the results speak for themselves. Tomlin is a mediocre pitcher and deserved to be haunted to the end of his days for getting blown up in the World Series.

    Way to go, Cubes.

If they must face Kluber, I’d rather it be short-rest Kluber. Though I think he only threw 80-some-odd pitches in game 1.

I’m honestly more worried about Lackey tomorrow.

Typical bipolar Cubs offense. Today we had the depressive phase. Maybe the manic phase will show up again, or maybe not. Honestly, by the third inning I “knew” (with that bad feeling that comes over me when 40+ years of Cub fandom starts firing my “we’re gonna lose” synapses) that the Indians would somehow scratch out a run, while the Cubs would get nothing. Nobody but nobody but nobody on the Cubs was going to get the little bloop single into right that Cleveland got. I am sick to death of being right, and kept hoping that Javy would get that hit in the last at bat…even though I “knew” he was going to strike out on a pitch way out of the zone. And he did.

A little more than a week ago, the Cubs were down 2-1 to a better team than the one they’re facing now, one with the best pitcher on the planet. If any team can handle this, it’s this Cubs team.
