The Hope Whatnow?
The Hope Monster is an insidious force that tries to supply the hapless Cubs fans with hope, only to feed off their bitter disappointment later when the Cubs inevitably lose.
People have historically blamed the Cubs' century-long failure to win a World Series title on a lot of things: lack of spending by the Wrigley company, evilness by the Tribune company, too many day games due to not having lights, caving in and buying lights which ruined the traditional atmosphere, urinal troughs, billy goats, curses, black cats, statistical variance, and good old fashioned sucking.
But the truth is that it has always been the work of the Hope Monster, pure and simple.
