Iowa

Alberto Cabrera struck out 4 in 2.1 IP. Thats about it. Brett Jackson was pulled as part of a double switch but I think he is staying put. Sappelt might guy the call up.

Smokies Game 1

Matt Szczur has done nothing but hit since moving up to AA to fill in for the injured Jae Hoon Ha. Last night he went 3-4  with a double. Logan Watkins was 2-4 with his 20th stolen base. Erick Jokisch pitched a complete game going 7 innings and allowing 3 ER.

Game 2

nothing worth writing about.

Daytona

PJ Francescon snapped out of his funk and delivered a good start pitching 6 shutout innings while striking out 6 and allowing 5 total baserunners. Maybe Francescon just needed to steal from the Children's Miracle Network tip jar to get his mojo back. On the hitting side of things Ronald Torreyes and Rubi Silva led the charge. Torreyes was 2-5 with a triple, stolen base # 13 and Silva went 3-4.

Peoria

Pin Chieh Chen continues hit hot streak at the plate as he collected 4 hits in 5 AB's last night. He raised his AVG to .267. Baez was 1-4 with a double. MB21 approved pitcher Joseph Zeller worked 5.1 innings and the only run he gave up with on a solo HR. He struck out 1 batter. Zeller has a 1.65 ERA in Peoria.

Boise & AZL

No Game.

theres no evidence of dempster talk with the # yankees. heres what we know. #dodgers #cubs cbsprt.co/Oyrqcp— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2012

The more Cubs try to float “interested” teams in Dempster, the more you think that the Dodgers are the only possible landing spot.— DKnobler (@DKnobler) July 31, 2012

#Yankees telling teams that contrary to reports in Chicago they’re not in on Ryan Dempster— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 31, 2012

I’ve been slacking like heck on comics because we’re moving, so I haven’t been watching games or following all the comments closely.

I like Alvin’s made up rumor last night. Let’s see what happened there. Jackson taken out same time as Johnson and Soto. Players taken out of games this time of year are sometimes involved in trades. Johnson shaking hands. Almost certain traded so we can assume Soto was too and now we can assume Jackson was too. This leads Alvin to say a source has told him Jackson being traded to.

He has no source. I’m more convinced that ever after last night. He made that shit up.

    @ GW:
He got spun. I think he has a really good source, but also think that source spins him, and Kap lets himself be spun so he keeps getting scoops. Aisley and I have long suspected this source to be Crane Kenney, but we don’t have a shred of proof. (dying laughing)

I’m guessing Kap knows he’s being spun and lets it happen so he can get good scoops. I’m betting he knows which are bullshit and which aren’t, but who knows?

    @ Mercurial Outfielder:

my guess is that it went something like this:

thoyer: are there any other teams that you have ever considered playing for at any time in your career, Ryan?
demp: i dunno, i used to think about the yankees because they pay a shitload of money to free agents
thoyer: fantastic. (gets on the phone with cashman)
    cashman: not interested.

crane kenney: kapman, the cubs have been on the phone with the yanks talking ryan dempster.

    @ Mercurial Outfielder:
He probably figures the 10% of the time he’s right he looks like gold, and half the time when he’s wrong, no one can prove he’s wrong (if Demp doesn’t go to the Yanks, how do you prove that the Yanks weren’t at least making calls?), so there’s no risk to him.

    @ Mucker:

That’s the source Al claims to have. Kaplan has a good source. He gets solid info and gets it early, but he also gets spun a lot. I agree with MB, though. Kaplan knows how the game is played.

I just checked and Deep Goat is still listed on the Cubs website under Player Development and Scouting personnel. He is about halfway down the list.

    @ Mucker:

really not that atypical for a catcher, i think. that time behind the plate can really wear down your offensive prowess. look at santana in cleveland this year. and he was a much better prospect than soto.
