Spring Training Game 1: A’s @ Cubs

In Game Threads by dmick89170 Comments

Rodrigo Lopez gets the first Cactus League start today at 2:05 pm. Starters generally pitch a couple innings their first start and then build up after that. You can click here to get Gameday. I wish I could write something about how important it is to get off to a good start, but I can't. Not only is it mostly irrelevant how teams or players perform in spring training, but this team is going to suck so it's even less relevant. It's not like going 22-9 in spring training means a damn thing. They're still going to lose more than 90 next year and potentially as many as 100.

Cubs Lineup

  1. Alfonso Soriano, LF

  7. Jeff Baker, DH
  8. Darwin Barney, 2B
  9. Welington Castillo, C
  • Pitcher: Rodrigo Lopez, RHP

A's Lineup

  1. Coco Crisp, CF
  2. Cliff Pennington, SS
  3. Josh Reddick, RF
  4. Chris Carter, DH
  5. Brandon Allen, 1B

It took 2 games, but Miguel Cabrera finally had a ground ball hit to him at 3B. That’s the good news. Bad news is: He clanked it. E-5.

He’s never been an adept fielder, and I don’t know why the Tigers ever thought that would change after he gained 400 lbs and got older.

I mean is that racist of Luke Scott? Probably? But if the Orioles players dont have an issue with it is it really that racist?

Throwing bananas at a dark-skinned Latino player? Yes. It’s incredibly racist. That Pie didn’t kick the living fuck out Scott right then only speaks to the degree to which prejudice has become parlance in MLB clubhouses.

Just because Pie and the other guys don’t rise to the bait doesn’t mean it isn’t racist. Now, friends will say all sorts of mean stuff to each other in jest, but it doesn’t mean that it is right. If I call MB a cocksucker just in the course of bantering back and forth, it might not bother him, but that doesn’t make it homophobic in nature.

We call each other fagets and we’re walking a fine line because it comes from mocking those who use it as a real derogatory comment, at least that is always how I have taken it. I don’t think Luke Scott is using the racial connotations to mock those who believe such things, I think he actually believes those things.

If Bob Brenly calls latino players lazy in a forest, it’s still racist. If he does it in the forestgif, I don’t know.

The Tigers are going to need to score 15 runs a game with the shambolic defense they’re going to field.

They only have some games. Take a look at the Cubs schedule on cubs.com. They have broadcast info there.

Eh. we already know Reed, Byrd, and Sori make the team. LaHair can play LF, so they only take one OF more, and that’s gonna be Campana.

Was Cashner pumping gas or what? 103 mph, and a quick look at other pitchers shows nothing out of whack with the pfx data.

    Wow…

Cashner was never known to hit 103 in his life so I don’t know why we’d think there isn’t something out of whack. I mean, if he was sitting at 101-103 I’m pretty damn certain something was out of whack. If he hit 103 on 1 of 20 pitches and the others were in the high 90s then maybe not.

Also in GA, up until November of last year (when the new law took place) it was illegal to buy liquor/beer at retail stores on Sunday, but you can buy it at the bar. So they were okay with you going out to the bar and getting shitfaced while watching the shitty Falcons Nascar on TV, but they weren’t okay with you buying beer and getting shitfaced at home.

Also they are okay with selling overproofed (190) grain alcohol and allow you to marry your cousin. Weird state.

… there are a lot of states that allow you to marry your cousin.
    http://marriage.about.com/cs/marriagelicenses/a/cousin.htm

North Carolina: First cousins, yes. Double first cousins are not allowed to get married.

wtf is a double first cousin?

    @ WaLi:
Arkansas is like that. In dry counties, like the one where I went to college, there are no liquor stores, but there are bars. The law allows them if you call them “Clubs” and charge a membership fee (they allow a provisional membership fee). Basically, so the rich people could keep drinking, while the poor slobs had to suffer the agony of driving to the next county to buy booze. Needless to say, drunken driving was a huge problem.

Is that like when you are cousins with someone on both your mom’s and dad’s side?

because your mom and dad were first cousins, so their siblings kids would be both of their natural nieces/nephews?

i don’t, i can’t figure that shit out. We need a botanist or geneticist something.

I live in Maryland where you can only get alchohol at beer and/or liqour stores but those stores are open on Sundays and you can still get it at restaurants or bars on Sundays. But if I drive 10 miles to West Virginia you can’t buy alchohol on Sundays at all, anywhere. It’s a dry state on Sundays. But you can buy it Monday through Saturday at any store, grocery, 7-11, CVS, Walmart……anywhere. It’s really weird going to the grocery store and seeing a beer aisle if you’re not used to that. Weird how those laws work.

I grew up in Iowa/Nebraska, where they’ve have beer in the grocery stores since I was a kid. I remember it was a big deal when they started selling beer/wine in the one grocery store in the pissant town in Nebraska where I went to high school. The arguments against were literally that housewives would be tempted to get drunk.

I would say that my time in Arkansas did directly contribute to my knowledge of that sort of thing. Arkansans are obsessed with family ties, more so than anywhere else I’ve lived. My family is thankfully small. So small, in fact, that it would be impossible for me to have a double first cousin.

In fact, I have no actual full-blood first cousins. So I’m in the clear in most states regarding who I get to marry. My wife is no relation to me.

Despite the outs, manager Dale Sveum liked what he saw, because it’s part of his plan to get the players to be more aggressive.

Even Mike Quade realized early on that this team and being aggressive was stupid. Hopefully Sveum also realizes it because it’s fairly obvious.

    @ WaLi:

In Viriginia you could buy wine and beer at the grocery store, but liquor only in an ABC store.

In PA you have to buy wine and liquor at the ABC, but if you buy beer you are restricted to buying at most 192 ounces (2 six packs) unless you buy from a distributor, who can only sell at the case/keg level (and really only to retail stores).

I don’t understand stupid liquor laws. I mean, I guess I understand where they started, but why states keep them is what I don’t get. Is it because people don’t vote, or what?

I couldn’t care less about liquor laws. At least liquor is legal. When marijuana is legal then I might care about the stupid liquor laws, but it’s retarded that marijuana isn’t legal. It’s no worse than alcohol and is in all likelihood better.

I don’t want to drink or smoke weed, but how one is legal and the other is not is stupid.
