Holy shit, Miguel Olivo just hit a solo home run that hit the left fielder’s glove in front of the warning track. The ball flew out of his mitt like 15 feet. I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Win probability ought to be -10% implying that a Cubs win would cause the universe to implode on itself (which I think would end sports history again).

Sickels, from the Notes post from Minor League Ball:

**Chicago Cubs outfield prospect Brett Jackson is off to a fast start for Double-A Tennessee: .350/.467/.633 in 17 games, with six steals, three homers, and a 13/14 BB/K ratio in 60 at-bats. The center fielders ahead of him at Triple-A Iowa are Fernando Perez and Tony Campana, neither player likely to be a hindrance to Jackson should the Cubs decide he’s ready for better competition. I’m impressed with Jackson’s combination of across-the-board tools and increasingly polished skills. He doesn’t have much left to prove in Double-A, and if I were the Cubs I’d consider promoting him to Iowa by the first of June. I had him as a Grade B+ and ranked as the Number 14 hitting prospect pre-season in the 2011 Baseball Prospect Book.

(dying laughing)
His percentage was low, but he kept runners at 1st base. I haven’t looked since last year, but when I ran the numbers, it was obvious that runners ran at will on Soto, but did not run nearly as often with Hill behind the plate. The career percentage is also significantly better. The bottom line is that if you want to stop the running game, Koyie Hill is pretty damn good at it. He’s not Yadier Molina, but he keeps the running game in check. Aramis Ramirez could steal 3 bases in a game against Soto.

Man. Reed Johnson is really bad. The Cubs have given roster spots to 5-6 guys who should be nowhere near a MLB roster.
Is that the date that they can promote him and not trigger the arb clock?
There’s never a specific date, but it’s usually the first week or two in June. I was just thinking more in terms of when the Cubs feel confident they can move on from Byrd and/or Colvin. Once they do that, he’s up.

    http://www.whatisthecubspayrollfornextyearwithbyrdbutnotaramis(assuminghecelineshisoption.com
Off the top of my head I want to say the Cubs have $95 million in guaranteed contracts on the books next season. Thereabout. Somewhere between $90 and $100 million. They have a lot of payroll coming off the books after this season: Fukudome, Silva, Samardzija, Ramirez, and Wood. That’s about $40 million.

If you add in arb-eligible players and auto-renewal contracts you’re probably up to at least $110 million in payroll next season. Let me look real quick.

$73.6 million, 7 players with a guaranteed contract.

4 arb eligible. Garza and Hill will be 3rd year eligible, Soto 2nd year and Randy Wells will be first year eligible.

Let’s say $9 million for Garza, $1 million for Hill, $6 million for Soto and $3 million for Wells. Round up to $20 million.

Now we’re up to $93.6 million for 11 players.

14 auto-renewal players (league minimum) is $5.6 million. $99.2 million. 15 players on the 40-man roster not on the 25-man roster is $750,000. $100 million and that’s if 14 players are auto-renewal players.

When I calculate OBP myself I always add ROE in though I wouldn’t add reaching 1st on a strikeout in. I haven’t read anything about a skill in reaching base after a strikeout and highly doubt it exists. There is a skill in reaching on an error and it should be included.

We keep hearing about Pujols, but how are they going to fit that contract in? It would be almost impossible unless they raised payroll or found a take for Soriano and/or Zambrano.
I find that dumb
I think it’s silly that ROE isn’t included, but I wouldn’t include reaching 1st on a dropped 3rd strike. Is there any skill to it? At least with ROE we know that guys who are fast or guys who hit the ball on the ground are going to reach base on errors more often than others. Besides, how many times does the dropped 3rd strike thing actually happen in a season? Probably 5 times per team at the most?

I have always wondered why when a batter has 2 strikes if the pitcher throws one really outside or high where the batter knows the catcher has no chance they dont swing so they can run to first.

/skills at reaching on dropped third strikes
