Rays 8, Cubs 1; Pirates 6, Brewers 4

OSS: Jon Lester looks bad, but the Pirates offense remembered their bats for once.

Three up:

  1. The Pirates Adam Frazier hit a walk-off HR to drop the Cubs magic number to 8. Frazier also got the run scoring going with a triple in the second inning. It took a player having a WPA of nearly .700 for the Pirates to win a game, but here we are.
  2. Special thanks to the usually unstoppable Corey Knebel for also allowing the tying run in the eighth thanks to a throwing error.
  3. The Cubs won seven games in a row. I guess we can't all be Cleveland. However, not many people know this, but the Cubs beat Cleveland in a rare best-of-seven series last year.

Three down:

  1. Man, does Jon Lester look cooked. Seven runs on eight hits and three walks and ZERO strikeouts in four plus innings is…not great. He has a 5+ ERA going back to the all star break. Maybe he caught JLHD (John Lackey Homer Disease). I think it's listed right next to David Patton Disease in the baseball DSM.
  2. I missed the game, but it sounds like Baez took a few shots at some 55 foot breaking balls.
  3. The Cardinals are pretty much done, but it's still annoying to see them win.

Next up: The Cubs play a crucial four game set against the Crew. Jake Arrieta returns from injury to face Zach Davies, who has been on fire in the second half of the season. He pitched seven innings of one run ball in his last outing against the cubs, about 2 weeks ago, but followed that up by getting wrecked for six runs by the Marlins.

    Big, if true.

    I think I asked this a few years ago, but I can’t remember so I’m asking again…

Rank your “The Wire” opening theme songs. Mine:

    1. Season 2 – Tom Waits.
    2. Season 1 – Nice spin on the original.
    3. Season 3 – The Neville bros over-sing, but it’s funky.
    4. Season 4 – Not a good song, but might be my favorite season. Enjoyed hearing it.
    5. Season 5 – GTFO with this trash song.

How poorly can the Cubs do in this series and still win the division? Technically they could be swept and still win it, but if that happens, the Brewers become the favorites to win the division in my opinion. If the Cubs win 1 of 4 I think it will be difficult for the Brewers to win the division. If the Cubs split the series I don’t see how the Brewers have a chance.

    uncle dave,

Yeah, they’d be tied in the loss column and down a win. If the Cubs could have just won a game against the Brewers in Chicago recently there’d be almost no chance of the Brewers catching the Cubs.

    To day’s base ball squadron:
    Jay
    Bryant
    Rizzo
    Contreras
    Schwarber
    Russell
    Heyward
    Baez
    Arrieta

I’d rather see Heyward in CF and Zobrist in RF, but I’ll take it.

The only thing that could make this game better would be if I were prepping for a colonoscopy.

    Turns out I am.

    BEST GAME EVER

Can’t tell if this Brewers pitcher has a weird delivery or if my feed is a little laggy.

I’m still trying to figure out why Rizzo was running there. Did he think they were trying to turn the double play at first?

    BVS,

I was thinking the Coomer was pretty heavy looking when I saw him do the stretch the other day, but he doesn’t look that much different from this picture.
