  • Series Preview: Chicago White Sox (40-42) vs Iowa Cubs of Chicago (34-48)

Somehow the White Sox are hovering around .500 despite the vortex of suck that is their offense. As @rotopat pointed out on Twitter yesterday, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has more hits against LHP than Adam Dunn does this year. Since everyone cares so much about the Crosstown Cup, the Cubs either need to sweep or win two out of three (winning the last game) to win. Maybe the teams should make it more interesting by making the loser have chemical dispersant sprayed all over their fans.

    Team Overviews

As always, team stats (and league rankings) are presented

    Cubs Sox
    wOBA .318 (7th) .314 (9th)
    UBR -8.9 (16th) -1.1 (8th)
    UZR -15.4 (15th) -10.4 (12th)
    SP FIP 4.14 (11th) 3.69 (4th)
    RP FIP 4.01 (12th) 3.48 (4th)

Paul Konerko (.412) and Carlos Quentin (.385) have basically carried the lousy Sox offense. They have three players who have double digit negative wRAA in Juan Pierre, Brent Morel, and Alex Rios, and given how he’s struggled this year I’m surprised Adam Dunn isn’t also on this list. The Sox starting pitching has been the strength of their team, and they were foolish enough to go to a six-man rotation before an injury to Danks brought things back to normal. I said it last time, but I’ll be shocked if one of those pitchers isn’t traded for a bat before long.

The Cubs have improved their pitching numbers since the last time these two teams faced off. The bullpen has shaved off a tenth of a point of FIP to improve their ranking, but the improvement of the starters’ ranking is largely a product of the rest of the league pitching lousier.

    Pitching Matchups

ERA, FIP, xFIP, and ZiPS projected FIP in parens.

    Friday Friday: Edwin Jackson, RHP (4.13, 3.06, 3.29, 4.00) vs Randy Wells, RHP (6.25, 5.05, 4.49, 3.98), 1:20 PM CT

The big factor in the drop of Jackson’s DIPS numbers is his HR rate, which sits at 0.58 HR/9. He’s also cut down on his walks a little bit, but I’m surprised to see how low his xFIP also looks. He’s had some lousy BABIP luck this year (.347) at first glance, but it can be explained by his 25% LD rate. In fact, it could probably be even higher than that.

Things still aren’t looking great with Wells. He only walked two in his last start, and has been able to go six innings in his last three, but something is still up. I have no idea how he managed to get through six innings vs the Royals and give up TEN line drives. He hasn’t struck out more than three batters in a game since striking out seven in his return to the DL. Maybe it’s MRI time again, or just time to shut him down for a while. Something ain’t right.

Saturday Saturday: Philip Humber, RHP (2.89, 3.49, 3.98, 5.04) vs Matt Garza, RHP (4.07, 3.07, 2.84, 3.84), 3:10 PM CT (presumably on FOX)

Speaking of guys outpitching their projections, holy crap Phil Humber. He’s had a lot of luck this year (.219 BABIP as a GB pitcher, 5.9% HR/FB) but he’s doing a great job of keeping the ball on the ground and not issuing free passes. He hasn’t pitched less than six innings in a start since April 20th, and has gone seven or more in nine of his fourteen starts. Not bad for a guy who was basically just keeping Peavy’s seat warm.

It’s probably just that I missed the game, but it feels like forever since the last time Garza pitched. His early season numbers are coming back down to earth, and while he still averages more than a strikeout per inning, he hasn’t actually accomplished that feat in his last six starts. He’s kept up his career-defying groundball numbers and I’m still scratching my head: 50.4% GB rate despite a sub-40% rate over the rest of his career.

    Sunday Sunday Sunday: Gavin Floyd, RHP (4.19, 3.91, 3.82, 3.62) vs Rodrigo Lopez, RHP (5.40, 5.28, 4.60, 4.73), 1:20 PM CT

Floyd has seen a drop in his strikeouts but otherwise has been the above average pitcher that he always has been. Much like Humber, he’s gone deep in a lot of games which is more than the Cubs staff can generally say.

The less said about Rodrigo Lopez, the better.

    Prediction

Cubs lose two out of three yet again. It’s too bad bridges were burned with Barrett left the Cubs org, because he should be the seventh inning stretch singer for every game this series.

Someone with some business sense must have taken over their fundraising operations a few years ago, because there was a huge drop in quality in their products. Their cookies are even shittier than the uber-processed grocery store “bakery” cookies that you can buy. They know that no-one can say no to a six-year old girl when she asks you to buy them.

(dying laughing). My wife used to work at an elementary school and would buy cookies from her kids. Then I’d give them away to grad students with lower baked good standards than I have (dying laughing). I’d rather just donate money and tell them to keep the cookies.

The dude is fucked up. Way way back, Ryno (JG) set up a poll about whether or not we should ban him. He went nuts then and the dumbass that I am invited his retarded ass back. I got what I deserved.

I think my favorite comment was from Santo’s Sorrow. TheHawk was going on and on about Barrett cost the Cubs 10 games through June 20007 by his defense only. SS responded by saying something like, “I have to say, that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” That was it. That was all he said. No argument. Nothing. That was about the best way to handle him.

I have a hard time pinning down any season of shows like BB. It’s so heavily serialized that the season breaks almost feel arbitrary. It’s not like Dexter or other dramas where stuff builds until the end of the season. Anything can happen at any time on BB and that’s one of the things that makes it great.

we’ve had it for almost a year, but Time Warner is playing hardball like they usually do, those fuckers, to prevent it from getting it down to basic cable instead of the upper digital tier. Besides, Dexter already screwed up with this last season. I enjoyed the show in season 5, but now he’s back where he started. I don’t see the point in that. It would be like BB having Walt become a loving and nurturing character after this upcoming season. It’s just not believable. Walt has been on this path since the first episode and there is no turning back. There’s only one way BB ends and that’s with Walt dead.

As much fun as the plot may be in Dexter with Deb finding out, I don’t even know if I want that. Deb has lost some of the love she’s had for her father over the years, but it would be devastating to her to learn that Dexter has been killing people and that her father taught him how to do it. Her father would be despised by the Miami Police Department, as would Dexter. There’s no way that doesn’t lead to serious problems for Deb.

Plus, it’s too easy. All along we’ve wondered what Deb would do if she found out. Well, we know what Deb would do if she found out. We’ve known all along. End the show in some other way.

Interacting with another killer was great. I would have preferred it was an established killer, though.

Also, I would have preferred Dexter ditch his “human” side (like he did with the guy in that ratty bathroom, no Alvin) all season. I was really looking forward to Dexter’s realization of how much he actually “cared” for Rita. Adding a killer to cajole him to the “dark side” would have been great, imo.

That’s what I understand. I don’t have access to it since TWC hasn’t brokered a deal with them, but from what I gather you’ll have access to the *entire* HBO catalog as a part of your regular HBO cable subscription.

Good for HBO – they created all this content, they might as well try to distribute it themselves.

Not sure, MB. He goes off on tangents, but he’s still very coherent. He does much of that for kicks. Some people are just all over the place and always were. Did you read his interview about a possible “Major League” reunion? It was good. He absolutely LOVES baseball. Pays attention to every team. Loves the sport. Maybe that’s why I’m so biased.
I don’t know why but I’m drawn to his interviews because they’re so entertaining. Not for the so-called insanity but the in-between moments most people don’t see. they only show the clips on most videos. I don’t think he’s insane. Those guys have enough money to take breaks & dry out. They may go off the deep end sometimes, but that’s the advantage of being filthy rich.

I meant to say Geo should’ve made sure to hit the ball early in the count to avoid getting wells to the plate, which might’ve induced a DP or a Wells K with 2 outs. The Sox would have been wise to pitch around him to do just that. Thankfully Geo came through.

I’ve never been less certain about a Texas Longhorns team. They went 5-7, but four of those losses were by one possession. They had terrible luck with turnovers, which should even out.

Even average play would have netted them at least two more wins last year. With the increase in conditioning and competent coordinators, I’m expecint an 8-win season. I wouldn’t be surprised with anything from 6-10 wins, though.

In two years, though, this team will begin a run of at least three consecutive BCS bowl appearances, though. Done deal sealed.

      HIGH ROLLERS
These teams should have the biggest international budgets this year. The High Rollers section is more crowded than usual this year, with 10 teams that have a good chance at handing out at least one seven-figure bonus.

Chicago Cubs: We’ll have to wait a decade to know how well each team did with its 2010 international signings, but the early returns for the Cubs have been outstanding. Dominican third baseman Jeimer Candelario is playing like an MVP candidate in the Dominican Summer League, Venezuelan shortstop Carlos Penalver has an OBP over .400 in the DSL and Venezuelan outfielder Jeffrey Baez is among the DSL leaders in hits, stolen bases and runs. This year the Cubs’ target appears to be Marck Malave, a switch-hitting catcher from Venezuela, and they’ll likely be active for other Latin and Pacific Rim players as usual. They have also been linked to Dominican catcher Eric Otanez, and with two DSL teams and a Rookie-level Arizona club, they would have the roster space to pull it off.

      8. MARCK MALAVE, C
      VENEZUELA
      B-T: B-R Ht.: 6-1 Wt.: 200
Malave drew widespread notice in October 2008, when he was the youngest player on Venezuela’s 14-and-under-team as a 13-year-old along at the COPABE Pan American championship, where he was teammates with righthander Victor Sanchez and 2010 signings Adonys Cardona (Blue Jays) and Rougned Odor (Rangers). Malave batted .467 (7-for-15) with a homer, two doubles and a walk in the tournament, spending time as a catcher and an infielder. Now 16, Malave trains with Ciro Barrios as a full-time catcher.

Malave’s arm might be his best tool. He has a short arm stroke and delivers plus throws consistently with great carry. Scouts who like Malave see him as a catcher who can hit from both sides of the plate, but not everyone is sold on his bat. He’s a better hitter from the right side, with questions about his bat speed from both sides of the plate, as the ball jumps off his bat due to his strength rather than his bat speed. He’ll have to make mechanical adjustments in pro ball. Malave is strong, but his thick, boxy body raises questions about his projection and isn’t the athletic frame that many scouts look for in young catchers. His below-average speed wouldn’t an issue as a catcher, but his lack of athleticism and experience are evident in his receiving, so he’s not a lock to stick behind the plate. Malave was connected to the Reds, who have signed a slew of Barrios’ players, but now most international sources believe Malave will end up with the Cubs.

I wrote this for some less-than-saber friendly people on facebook:

Wells is being a victim of poor performance AND bad luck, which basically explains his regression this year. The three things he has control over (at least to some extent) are all trending poorly; his K/9 is down (and it was never great), his BB/9 is up (held a solid 2.7ish the last two years, 4.25 in 2011), and he’s giving up more home runs this year (which is partially bad luck, as his HR/FB% is above league average and should regress downward). The biggest concern (besides the walks) is the drop in his groundball rate from 47% to 40%.

On the luck side of the ledger, he’s only stranding 64% of baserunners, and we know generally pitchers regress to a 72% LOB%. But lest we all forget, that he’s only face 163 batters coming into today, and very few pitching stats stabilize in that small of a sample. Also worth noting is that his fastball is only 1-2 mph below what it was last year, compared to 4-6 below as it was when he came off the DL.

Let’s put it this way: neither player is nearly as good as they once were. Whether or not that means done depends on how one defines it. Neither can be counted on to be productive players at this point in their career.

I would have said Ramirez was done entering the season and his wOBA is what we projected it to be.

I definitely don’t care if he made an out when the Cubs needed a baserunner. In my opinion, they should play Koyie HIll every day and put John Grabow on the mound every single inning.
