Quade has made a lot of poor decisions, bullpen management, etc.. not that it means much in the big picture. Cubs would still suck. But, when you’re this bad and out of the race, no reason to demote your highly paid closer.

I could understand if Quade was going to use Marmol and Marshall in the 9th based on the handedness of the batters coming up that inning, but Marshall and Wood? That’s a huge step down. A slumping Carlos Marmol is better than Kerry Wood.

I think there really is something wrong with Marmol’s mechanics and I think it was commendable that Q trotted him out today anyway as a show of confidence, but there’s only so much a manager can do when his guy’s not performing…I agree with you that maybe they should have just said Marmol would get a break and not talked about what would happen when he returned, instead just saying “we’ll take it a day at a time” or “no comment”.
I think if Marmol can figure out his release point he’ll be fine.
By the way, he always seems to throw out of the stretch but I thought a lot of relievers threw out of the stretch. Is that a problem?

I don’t know if giving Marmol a break is all that bad an idea if he has some legit mechanical issues. Every athlete gets into bad habits from time to time. Albert Pujols is the best hitter I’ve probably seen, (and living in the Lou with their Exenaphobic sports coverage i see him a lot), but even he gets into getting pull conscious or where he’s lunging at the ball. One of the things that separates him is his ability to rapidly adjust what he’s going. An advantage that he has is that he gets multiple chances per game to tweak those adjustments and he only has to be successful 30% of the time. I think with Marmol in the closer role, with a sample size that small and with as little tolerance as fans will have for him failing while he irons things out, it might be ok to pull him out of that role until he’s right again. The cliche is that good coaches find ways to put their players in a position to succeed, right? I know it’s not the greatest analogy and it’s not backed by anything close to numbers, but maybe someone who didn’t have to take an intro to college algebra, college algara, and an intro to statistics 3 times each can find some data about closets who struggled then got it back together?

Is it possible that Hendry and Ricketts are thinking about spending a really large amount of money next year and buying a team to take them to the post season? That might at least explain their hesitancy to trade anyone. Maybe Ricketts has more money than people think, or is banking on having a really big year if he can buy up a good team? Not saying its a smart move, but I’m trying to make sense of their behavior.

The Cubs need to build around Darwin Barney, Jeff Baker, Sean Marshall, and Kerry Wood to win a World Series. It’s gonna happen. The best is yet to come.
