I definitely liked how unobstructed your views of Fukudome were. They were the unobstructediest.
I didn’t like the signing at the time and there’s no reason to rehash all of that. The reality is that he was OK player, it wasn’t a bad contract at the time, and the Cubs horribly misused him for 3 years. To Lou’s credit he didn’t play him against lefties much after his first season, but he still tried to hit him in the middle of the order way too much. Even last year when he batted leadoff regularly, he still saw plate appearances in the middle of the order.

So say what you want about Mike Quade, but he realized right away that Fukudome is a leadoff man.

I know lineups are usually only marginal when it comes to runs, but I recall at the beginning of Aug 2009 the Cubs were tied or flat-out in first place, and had been hot with Fukudome and Bradley hitting 1-2. Then the Cubs traveled to Colorado, and since Kosuke was hot, Lou dropped him to 5th and re-inserted Theriot at the top of the lineup, and the Cubs would lose the series and slowly fall out of the race.

An anecdote that probably doesn’t mean a whole lot, but that always stuck out to me for whatever reason.

I agree he was misused. It used to really bug me how much Ron Santo hated him. He hated Fukudome’s swing, though Ichiro has made almost the exact same swing work pretty well.

He wasn’t the #3 hitter they told us he would be, but whatever, he had skills. I know it’s conjecture, but I wonder if the crazy emphasis on his hitting is why we’ve seen his defense slip the last couple of years.

It might help if the Cubs had a front office and a general manager who could temper expectations with some real talk, but guys like Hendry don’t like to do that, they talk about him having a good swing or being good on defense, or throw around cliches like 5-tool player. If they did honest comparisons and justified the money they had spent based on similar players up front, you temper the expectations, and emphasize the team aspect of the game. But that’s not the storyline the press and the GM want to sell.

    /optimism goggles engaged
I thought Byrd’s (“Take me with you!”) and A-Ram’s (“maybe if they asked nice, I’ll say yes”) were pretty telling of the team atmosphere. No one wants to be on a team this bad, and the players themselves don’t seem to see much hope for next year.

I don’t blame that entirely on Hendry. He wants to sell the quality of his moves to a degree, but the overhype is a product of the Cubs culture. The marketing wing of the Cubs has basically run that team for as long as I can remember.

They never do anything that might deviate from the overall marketing meme “This could be the year!” Thus the constant faux-contending, constant idolization of prospects in the minors via Vineline, and overstating the value of players they acquire like Fukudome (or Bradley or Burnitz or any of the other right fielders they got to replace Sammy).

They used to do it with every third baseman and now it’s every right fielder. I’ll bet you money that is at least part of the reason they fucked around with trying to make Bert Jackson a corner outfielder. I don’t have a source, that is just my own conspiracy theory.

I agree to a certain extent, but not completely. The Cubs are a business and any business is going to run in a way to highlight every aspect of it even if some of it is subpar. Take AMC as an example and how one of their top guys explained how The Killing is one of their better shows the other day. Nobody in their right mind would think that after watching the season, but they’re going to sell it the same way they did before its first season. The Cubs are no exception.

I also believe the marketing works for Cubs fans because they so desperately want to believe this is the year. They’ll believe anything that might even point in that direction. It’s less useful for an organization like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers or even the Astros. Those organizations aren’t as desperate to believe this is the year as Cubs fans are. If they were, the same type of overhyping would occur.

I don’t believe the Cubs as a business do anything differently than the others when it comes to this kind of thing. I believe the biggest difference is the desperation of Cubs fans. We’ll see it in a couple years with Starlin Castro when people begin to finally realize that he is not and will never be a superstar. He’ll still be valuable, but he will not have become nearly as good as they were expecting. He’s the one that’s going to lead this team to the World Series and he’s the one you build around to most Cubs fans. When it becomes apparent he’s not that kind of a player, the fans will begin talking about how the Cubs overhyped him, but they didn’t.

It’s easy to blame the fans for this, but I really do think they’re to blame here. There’s nothing that can be done to change it. Cubs fans have a certain frame of mind anymore and that won’t change even if they win a championship.

Think of it like this: marketing is used to increase revenue and if the Cubs machine was creating more revenue from hyping players then other teams would do it. I think the reality is that they all already do it and the difference is the fans.

    Just my 28 cents.

When you look at the 2007/08 teams, there was no Barry Bonds, but several guys all having solid years. And if memory served, it seemed like they had good luck in terms if one guy had a few off days, someone else happened to be going well. It doesn’t necessarily take a Barry Bonds to win. But I don’t know if there’s any way to tell Cubs fans this.

But that’s about all the value he had in his Cubs career; the power that he showed in Japan never manifested itself on this side of the Pacific, and his MLB career — which I suspect is over after this season — has to be seen as a huge disappointment.

He’s started using dashes in the place of multiple commas, but the cuntiness remains intact.

Is there a general rule for BABIP in regard to a player’s career? For example, Bonds career BABIP was .285. The Babe’s was .340. Is there a general rule of increase for avg., hits, RBIs, etc. if Bonds had a higher BABIP, say .320?

BABIP is a result of multiple factors, including speed and batted ball profile (e.g. LD>GB>FB). For instance, Bonds was something of a fly ball hitter. You could increase his BABIP by exchanging some flyballs for groundballs, but that would take away from his SLG. Or you could magically turn his groundballs into line drives, which would lead to an all-around increase, etc.

I think BABIP also doesn’t take into account HR (which are by definition no longer in play) and since he kind of hit 762 of them, that would deflate his BABIP a bit…but I might not be thinking about that totally right.

    Either Aramis or Hendry:

“You cant rebuild in a big market. Youve got to try to put a winning product on the field”

It is unclear from Sullivan’s tweet which one said it.

I would want berselius to verify the validity of this mathematical masterpiece but it’s pretty fucking awesome.

    To sum up today:

Love the Klinsmann hire, hate the Williams signing, wish the Cubs would just forfeit the rest of the season and save themselves the embarrassment.

He basically said that yesterday, but also said he’d consider it if presented with one. He wants to stay in Chicago. That much we know. He also said he’d consider a trade.

Given 140 characters one should be able to comfortably fit 17 facepalms into one tweet. And the Cubs can’t forfeit until they have the #1 pick. Don’t be such a quitter.

Think Cust was DFA’d. Seeing as the Legend that is Micah Hoffpauir is no longer w/ the Cubs and there’s no 1B in the system, is he worth looking at for the rest of the season? I haven’t looked at his park adjusted numbers and I know his power has tailed off but he has been hitting in some caverns in the AL his whole career. Could make sense as a temporary Pena replacement.

Early signs point to hoax, but I’m checking my equations for typos.

The fact that you can see the outline of the bottom of the wing and the top of the head makes me think this could just be a sensitivity thing

Staring at the equations a bit longer, I think it does give the batman logo but only after some creative pruning. The first two terms give the bottom wing shape and the sweeping arc of the outer wings, and the plotter captures those pretty well. The third term gives the ears on the head, but it’s a cheat because that part of the function is also zero for a portion between the ears, and nowhere near the ear location. The 4th and 6th terms give the upper arcs of the wings (with some trimming…) and the 5th gives the top of the head.

Another way of stating that is that while I think the batman logo solves that equation, it’s not the set of all possible points that do so

Corey Patterson leading off for the Cards today. I don’t understand where people get the idea that Tony LaRussa is a genius.

    SCIENCE!!!!

I don’t think he does it as much anymore. Is Theriot hitting second still? Auto-outs at the top are awesome.
