According to Tim Brown of Yahoo, Geovany Soto has been traded to the Texas Rangers.
Soto has been traded to Rangers.

Not sure how accurate this is, but it figures the Cubs would pull this shit when I'm about ready to go to bed.
This trade is not related to the Reed Johnson trade and there is no word yet on why Brett Jackson was pulled from the Iowa Cubs game.
Carrie Muskat says on twitter that Paul Maholm may also be included with Reed Johnson to the Braves.
Reports that Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson dealt to
#Braves.#Cubs— Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) July 31, 2012
The Cubs can do more than one thing at once.
UPDATE 1: The Cubs aquired 24 year old Jacob Brigham (RHP) from the Rangers for Geovany Soto. Brigham has spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons in AA and has totaled 238.1 innings for AA Frisco. He allowed 229 hits, walked 3.8 while striking out 8.7 per 9.
UPDATE 2: My favorite Soto memory below:
Johnson made some great defensive plays for the Cubs, but this grand slam by Prince Fielder that he took away is my favorite. Super classy by Prince.
The Cubs acquired Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizaino for Maholm and Johnson. Vizcaino entered the season as the 40th ranked prospect in baseball. He had Tommy John surgery this spring and is still recovering. You've gotta love this trade. Could pay off huge down the road. Didn't give up much to get that kind of potential either.

@ josh:
I can’t get excited for a Soriano trade. No matter what, the Cubs eat a ton of salary and don’t get much in return. That doesn’t mean the Cubs shouldn’t be looking into it, but other teams aren’t fools.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
Ah, I was just trying to be funny.
Al has the worst source in the history of speech.
Sori in a package for a prospect, maybe. I could see a slight chance of something decent.
@ josh:
I think I’ve established myself as the most humorless person here. I’m always responding to jokes to make serious points.

I’m going to let this shit get setled out and deal with it tomorrow. Have fun.
This is awesome.
Any chance for Delgado?
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I am not saying that sometimes he hears voices or thinks his bologna sammich is speaking to him, but I got banned on BCB for asking about it.
@ mb21:
How the hell can you people sleep? This is the most exciting thing to happen in three years.
Cubs trade 2/3 of roster in 1 night (dying laughing). They still get very little in return.
@ mb21:
Don’t tell me what to do
Awesome night on twitter.
two minor league pitchers from the braves
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I’m guessing the next tidbit is that David Patton is being recalled to take Maholm’s spot
no delgado
@ bubblesdachimp:
A424 is cracking me up.
@ josh:
If I thought the cubs were going to get anything all that good I’d probably stick around to find out who, but it’s mostly going to be minor league fillers.
The Braves 10th best pitching prospect would likely become the Cub’s best pitching prospect.
@ mb21:
Nice snark. Good luck with your slumber.
@ mb21:
Yeah, I know. It’s just……something?

So I have this 80GB hard drive from this old laptop I just sold. Thinking about sticking it into my desktop, but it seems kind of pointless. 80gb? Amirite?
Anyone have suggestions on what to do with an old hard drive?
phil rogers is bringing the lulz tonight
@ josh:
Take the magnet out and send it to me so I can make a stir plate
@ WaLi99:
$50
@ josh:
MAGNETS!? HOW THE HeLL DO THEy WORK!?!
The Cubs suck this year, but today they won by 10. Obviously the Cubs are relieved to have traded such cancers like Johnson, Maholm and Soto.
@ WaLi99:
Wait, is that like a Breaking Bad reference? Like that time dude wanted me to sell him a refrigerator my landlord left in my yard? Is everyone on meth but me?
@ WaLi99:
Dammit, beat me to it!
@ josh:
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
First $50 wins it. Just send your $50 and I’ll notify you of the winner. No refunds.
@ josh:
It depends what you do now, I guess. You could throw it in an external enclosure and have a portable HDD. You could use it for a backup of a backup of core files, the 80GB of things you CANT lose, just put it in a sealed bag, you know? I’ve had so many spare hard drives (dying laughing)
Or you could go super nerd and make it into a clock
KG likes the return for Soto.
@ Akabari:
That’s awesome.
Would we really do this?

rosenthal says bigger deal coming
I’ve updated the post with my favorite Soto memory
@ GW:
He’s suggesting Garza to the Reds
jaye chapman
@ mikeakaleroy:
Trades inside the division don’t often happen.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Agreed. Hence my confusion.
Jim Bowden tweeted that Soriano said no to being traded to Giants. I would have liked that.
@ Berselius:
Also added Johnson’s robbed grand slam
arodys vizcaino
@ mb21:
I liked that one too. The embed didn’t work well but that might just be on my end (using Chrome)
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
That’s because we hear about them.
@ GW:
Are you just naming random players?
@ mb21:
no. brigham, vizcaino, and chapman are all coming
Vizcaiano and Chapman from the Braves. Vizcaini had TJ this spring, was one of their top prospects beforehand
fuck us. We could have had Viz and Delgado.
guy was # 40 heading into this year
@ dylanj:
Could be an awesome pickup. Makes you wonder what the Braves know about him.
Reed also had that spectacular catch in DC in 2008. I was at that game, but sitting in the right field corner without a clear line of sight of the play. (dying laughing)
I really like the Reed/Paul deal.
2. Arodys Vizcaino, RHP Born: Nov 13, 1990 B-T: R-R Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 190
Signed: Dominican Republic, 2007. Signed by: Alfredo Dominguez (Yankees)
Background: Acquired from the Yankees in the December 2009 deal that sent Javier Vazquez to New York, Vizcaino partially tore an elbow ligament in his first season in the Braves system but put that behind him in 2011. He appeared in the Futures Game while rising from high Class A Lynchburg to Atlanta, moving from the rotation to the bullpen when he got to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Scouting Report: Vizcaino’s fastball sits at 93-95 mph and touches 97. He also has sharp-breaking curveball that’s a plus pitch but he tends to fall in love with it too much. He made impressive strides with his changeup in 2011 to give him three solid offerings. He does an excellent job of challenging hitters when he’s behind in the count but needs to improve his fastball command in order to stay ahead.
The Future: Given how he responded to relieving, plus the depth of starters in Atlanta, Vizcaino could remain in the bullpen. However, a potential No. 2 or 3 starter is a prized commodity. Either way, he’ll take a prominent role with the Braves as he gains experience.
I’m assuming Vizcaino isn’t even on a throwing program yet, right? You gotta like this trade. Cubs foot the bill for the rehab, but if all goes well they have a potential ace. Braves get out of paying for the rehab and get someone who can help them right now. Could pay off big time for the Cubs and seriously hurt the Braves. Maybe not.
Could go either way. (dying laughing)
@ Perkins:
Was that the one where he dove and his hat got flipped up?
No more Chik-Fil-A for the Cubs.
Nothing yet on Johnson’s reaction from Drudge.
i mean Maholm isn’t chopped liver. So I’m not totally shocked. Happy though
so when mcleod said they would avoid guys with mechanics that looked like they could lead to arm trouble, that was bullshit
@ mb21:
I am a huge fan. Reed and paul are professionals but would never be part of a contending cubs team. Vizcaino if he comes back healthy can 100% be a great part of a contending cubs team. I like all three guys we picked up. All have some risk. But all have reward for players that werent going to be here in two years.
I think ATL had so much pitching they could afford to make this move.
I think Garza goes to TOR and Dempster to WASH, or dempster and Soriano to LAD
bubblesdachimp wrote:
This guy is a potential ace, bubs. Less than 300 innings, but already reached the big leagues at age 20, better than 4 to 1 K/BB ratio. That’s fucking awesome.
Skimming the thread I saw Reds and Chapman and I got really confused and excited for like, 2 seconds before I came back to reality (dying laughing) (dying laughing) (dying laughing)
I’m personally hoping that the Cubs hire some witch doctors or acupuncturists to make sure Vizcaino’s arm stays intact.
@ GW:
I think there’s a difference between avoiding guys with mechanical issues and receiving a person with mechanical issues for Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson.
@ GW:
(dying laughing), so it seems
@ mb21:
yeah, but they also drafted that guy who blew his elbow out… shit can’t remember which one
@ WaLi99:
Yeah. He ran really hard and made a sliding catch in the left field corner. And strike my previous comment; I was sitting in the left field corner. Apparently I have typing dyslexia or something.
doug padilla says jackson may not be coming up
Miles says Cubs are quashing talk of a Jackson callup, says Coleman is coming up to take Maholm’s spot.
@ mb21:
I can never tell if you are trolling me casue i tend to have a rosy outlook on prospects.. My only concern with him is that this is his second major arm problem…
but were you being serious?
(dying laughing)
(dying laughing)
This trade is tits.
@ bubblesdachimp:
Sorry, dead serious on this one. The guy is coming off injury so expectations have to be adjusted of course, but if this guy recovers he has the potential to be awesome. No, I’m not fucking with you. This guy was on his way to being damn good.
@ GBTS:
Agreed. Fun day to be a cub fan.. Wonder what tomorrow will be like.
Pretty impressed with theo getting vizcaino though. I liked him more then delgado or teahren going into spring
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Don’t they have to call 3 guys up to replace the 3 they traded? Castillo replaces Soto, Coleman replaces Maholm. Someone has to replace Johnson’s spot. I don’t know if it’s Jackson, but Coleman coming up doesn’t mean Jackson isn’t.
Seriously, if you hear a Cubs fan complain about this deal, roll them up in a carpet and throw them off a bridge.
Also, Vizcaino is only 21 still
GBTS wrote:
I thought Bacon was the new Tits?
@ mb21:
Sounds like MB just might be ready to love again.
@ mb21:
Speculation is Sappelt to replace Johnson.
@ GW:
True. That was frustrating. I seem to recall both of us being confused by that pick.
I’m of the opinion if teams could really figure out what was mechanically sound then we’d see pitching injuries drastically reduced, but that’s not at all what we see. I don’t think teams (or doctors for that matter) have the foggiest damn clue when it comes to proper mechanics. I remember when people talked about Mark Prior’s perfect mechanics. It was funny at the time because it was inevitable that if he got injured he’d suddenly not have perfect mechanics.
Honestly, I’ve never heard more people say the words “perfect mechanics” as I did when Mark Prior was drafted and on his way to becoming a super star. I could be completely wrong, but I generally dismiss talk about pitching mechanics. I don’t think anyone has a firm grasp on what is and what isn’t proper mechanics. I could be 100% wrong. Regardless of that, I’m more than happy to take this kind of risk for the two guys the Cubs gave up.
@ GBTS:
I think you really have to be looking for a reason to complain, but if you’re one of those people who believes you should stay away from someone coming off this kind of injury I can accept the complaint. If it’s about the numbers or something like that, no I can’t. You’re really have to focus only one the negative, which I’m generally very good at. This is just a no brainer for the Cubs. It really does make you wonder what the Braves know. We already know that teams know more about their own players than teams trading for them, but I don’t see how you can fault the Cubs here.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Makes sense in a way. I’m not really sure what else Jackson has to prove in the minors. He’s going to strike out a lot. That’s just all there is to it. If you leave him down right now you may as well send him back to AAA until June or July next year. Same with Vitters for that matter.

Yeah, might as well. KG was saying earlier that with guys who have the “makeup” that Jackson has, you can bring them up and let them learn their lessons in the bigs.
