  • TRADE ALERT! Cubs Complete Trade With Boston Red Sox!!!

OMG! OMG! OMG! This is the most exciting thing ever!!!

OK, maybe it's not so exciting.

But Coleman is probably heading to St. Louis, which probably means something is actually going to happen with Dempster soon. Probably.

Or not. We're taking a wait and see approach.

    UPDATE

The Cubs are now saying that Coleman is only being sent to St. Louis in case Germano can't get there in time for the game. This smells like bullshit to me since A) they wouldn't have to DFA Asencsio until they are ready to activiate Germano and 2) When did a journey from Boston to St. Louis become such an ordeal that he might not make it by tomorrow's game? Maybe Germano is Amish and he can only travel by horse and buggy? There just doesn't seem to be any real reason to have Coleman standing by as a contingency for the Germano acquisition.

Yeah, he’s old for AAA of course, but those are excellent control numbers and though the strikeout rate isn’t that impressive it’s more than enough considering the low walk rate. I don’t expect much from the guy, but he’s probably not any worse than Chris Volstad.

All due respect to Batman (Mish) whose review I’ll read and appreciate, I’m going to guess we can find more honest reviews from a non-Batman fan than we will from a huge Batman fan. I’m not saying we can’t expect that from MIsh. I’m just saying it’s silly to only want reviews from those who are fans. It’s like only wanting Starlin Castro fans to review Starlin Castro.

Beats me. Maybe he’s 29. That might explain the drop in velocity. I really don’t get this signing. It’s like the Cubs are printing money, which would have been great a couple years ago, but there are spending limits now. They blew it all on this guy. On a 22 year old.

      @ mb21:

If he’s an elite talent, I get it; do what is necessary. But this guy somehow signed for $1.1m in an uncapped year, was suspended for a year, came back with reduced velocity and got $1.5 under the hard cap. That’s a pretty neat trick.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    46. mb21 48 mb21 says:

      @ GW:
Yeah, but that’s pretty old for an elite talent and then there’s the whole thing of lesser velocity and MORE money even though there’s a spending limit. Can’t help but wonder if the Cubs were negotiating with themselves here. I hope he’s really good, but 22 is pretty fucking old.

Yes, that is a weird stance. Are only people who saw and liked (redundant, everyone saw and liked) the first 2 movies allowed to express an opinion? What if you’re a professional film critic, and you hated the first two movies? It’s literally still your job to express your opinion about the third movie.

      From Bill James Online: http://www.billjamesonline.com/hey_bill/

You have always championed the value of on-base percentage, yet you seem to favor b. avg., HR, and rbi when referring to a player. Wouldn’t it serve the cause better to use OBA, SLGA, and OPS.
      Asked by: Kev
      Answered: 7/19/2012
I DO use OBA, slugging and OPS quite often, but very often the Triple Crown Stats do a better job of describing the season. Showboat Fisher in 1930 had almost the same on base percentage, slugging and OPS as Stan Musial in 1946 (.432, .587, 1.019 for Fisher, .434, .587 and 1.021 for Musial)–but Fisher’s triple crown stats were 8, 61, .374, whereas Musial’s were 16, 103, .365. It’s misleading to represent these as similar seasons.

The triple crown stats open up more naturally to a wider discussion. You give Musial’s triple crown stats, you can say in the next phrase “with 50 doubles and 20 triples.” When you start with the percentages, you’re not in position to build onto it as easily–sometimes; sometimes you are, but sometimes you’re not. It depends on where you need to go.
