OMG! OMG! OMG! This is the most exciting thing ever!!!
Cubs acquire relieve Justin Germano from Boston for cash; Jairo Asencio designated for assignment. Coleman scratched from Iowa start.
— Paul Sullivan (@PWSullivan) July 19, 2012
OK, maybe it's not so exciting.
But Coleman is probably heading to St. Louis, which probably means something is actually going to happen with Dempster soon. Probably.
Or not. We're taking a wait and see approach.
UPDATE
The Cubs are now saying that Coleman is only being sent to St. Louis in case Germano can't get there in time for the game. This smells like bullshit to me since A) they wouldn't have to DFA Asencsio until they are ready to activiate Germano and 2) When did a journey from Boston to St. Louis become such an ordeal that he might not make it by tomorrow's game? Maybe Germano is Amish and he can only travel by horse and buggy? There just doesn't seem to be any real reason to have Coleman standing by as a contingency for the Germano acquisition.

Bruce Miles @BruceMiles2112
#Cubs say Coleman scratch from Iowa start is just in case Justin Germano can’t get to St. Louis on time tomorrow
definitely seems like a solid control guy
@ bubblesdachimp:
is he taking a bus? it’s tomorrow night.
@ GW:
Yeah, he’s old for AAA of course, but those are excellent control numbers and though the strikeout rate isn’t that impressive it’s more than enough considering the low walk rate. I don’t expect much from the guy, but he’s probably not any worse than Chris Volstad.
@ GW:
(dying laughing) same thing I was thinking. Is he walking, going by boat, riding a bike? They have airplanes now. I’m sure the Cubs would book him on aeroplane since he might be summoned to the big leagues.
@ mb21:
yeah, seems like a decent enough flier, presuming he isn’t vaporized during the summoning process
@ GW:
my thoughts exactly
ZOMG GONNA FOLLOW @justgerm RIGHT NOW ZOMFG
So, is this the guy we are flipping for Nolasco?
@ mb21:
He’s with Pawtucket, right? You don’t know how hard it is to get out of that wilderness.
@ mb21:
Apparently, the latest flight you can get from Des Moines to St. Louis leaves at 6:30, which may be a tight squeeze if he has to pack and what not. It’s a pleasant six-hour drive, though. Might actually be a better option…
@ Rice Cube:
Oh, uh, whoops (dying laughing).
Post updated with new Germano-taking-the -slow-boat-from-China route to St. Louis information.

Is this part of OV’s facepalm arsenal yet?
@ Aisle424:
Could add this part to the things that don’t make sense post from yesterday. They play tomorrow night, right? He could take a bus and get there on time. I would assume he has to pack, but how much does he have? It’s been fairly common for players to just get out of town and have someone pack their shit for them. I’m thinking you’re right about horse and buggy.
@ mb21:
It’s just hilarious that they give such a plainly bullshit explanation and nobody bothers to question it. They just pass it along as fact. If I were Theo, I’d be actively thinking up how ridiculously transparent I could make my lies before anyone came with a follow-up.
@ Aisle424:
Yeah, it’s hilarious that these idiots can so easily be fed a bunch of lies and then they run with it.
@ mb21:
So what’s this guys contract like? Did we just buy him for this year?
Also, if we picked up germano and are calling up Coleman, then isn’t there going to be two trades by tomorrow?
Jim Callis @jimcallisBA
RT @benbadler: Juan Carlos Paniagua again turned suspension into bigger payday. Signed w/#Cubs today for $1.5 million
also baez does what baez does and hits homerun
Tails on the Paniagua stuff at BA
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/07/cubs-sign-juan-carlos-paniagua-for-1-5-million/
Isn’t the international cap $2.4m? The Cubs have spent $2.2 on Paniagua and de la Rosa
He has to be investigated by MLB again to approve the deal, so hopefully third time’s the charm.
@ Berselius:
that’s what i was thinking. pretty big chunk of change for a 22 year old. unless he’s old enough not to qualify.
mb21 wrote:

@ Berselius:
apparently it’s $2.9m
Does anyone know if Mish is busy tonight? I have an attractive female friend who is giving away free weed and blow jobs tonight, but only from 2:00-2:15 AM.
@ WaLi99:
He has just over 2 years of service time and should be arbitration eligible after this year if he sticks on the roster the rest of the season.
I don’t think Coleman has been called up. If anything, he’s only up in case Germano doesn’t make it to St. Louis. St. Louis is a very hard place to reach by travel you know.
Badler: Paniagua is in the Cubs top 30.
Really going out on a limb with that one
@ GW:
So the Cubs can’t sign any other international players? They wasted it all on a 22 year old with no experience above DSL?
@ GW:
According to the documents he isn’t old enough to sign and not count against the Cubs allowable international spending. This is just weird.
@ mb21:
yeah, i agree. i was kinda hoping they would sign a bunch of younger players in the 100-500k range.
Peasants! Arst thou conversing?
I know MIsh already linked this, but I don’t understand Tango’s point here: http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/the_dark_knight_rises_reviews_controversy/
Why would you only care about what Batman fans think of the movie. I’d actually care more about the average moviegoer thinks than what a Batman fan thinks. All due respect to Batman (Mish) whose review I’ll read and appreciate, I’m going to guess we can find more honest reviews from a non-Batman fan than we will from a huge Batman fan. I’m not saying we can’t expect that from MIsh. I’m just saying it’s silly to only want reviews from those who are fans. It’s like only wanting Starlin Castro fans to review Starlin Castro.
why the hell would he use falsified documents if not to change his perceived age?
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Nay M’Lord!
GW wrote:
The Cubs signed Castro for $45k, so spending anything more than that is dumb
/Pujols argument
@ Berselius:
Aaron Cook has two strikeouts. Your argument is invalid.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
This must be a consequence of the smooth jazz version of Highway to Hell that I heard in Spain (dying laughing)
@ GW:
Beats me. Maybe he’s 29. That might explain the drop in velocity. I really don’t get this signing. It’s like the Cubs are printing money, which would have been great a couple years ago, but there are spending limits now. They blew it all on this guy. On a 22 year old.
@ Berselius:
It’s better than the ukulele version of “Baba O’Reilly” to which I am treated at the Saturday market each week.
@ mb21:
Only the Cubs can fuck up something as awesome as THoyer.
@ mb21:
If he’s an elite talent, I get it; do what is necessary. But this guy somehow signed for $1.1m in an uncapped year, was suspended for a year, came back with reduced velocity and got $1.5 under the hard cap. That’s a pretty neat trick.
@ GW:
Yeah, but that’s pretty old for an elite talent and then there’s the whole thing of lesser velocity and MORE money even though there’s a spending limit. Can’t help but wonder if the Cubs were negotiating with themselves here. I hope he’s really good, but 22 is pretty fucking old.
It appears as though he’s using the same exact paperwork that was ruled falsified by MLB last year.
@ mb21:
Yes, that is a weird stance. Are only people who saw and liked (redundant, everyone saw and liked) the first 2 movies allowed to express an opinion? What if you’re a professional film critic, and you hated the first two movies? It’s literally still your job to express your opinion about the third movie.
Personally, I just go with Ebert or Onion AV club.
@ Edwin:
Yeah, it’s very bizarre. If someone is good at reviewing movies them I’m going to value his review more than I will someone who is just a huge Batman fan. The whole line of reasoning from Tango is beyond silly.
From Bill James Online: http://www.billjamesonline.com/hey_bill/
Ummm……
Tango and MGL are some odd motherfuckers.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
WTF? No, really,
http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/8182551/los-angeles-dodgers-made-trade-offer-chicago-cubs-starter-ryan-dempster

Sad day when Bruce Levine is the only beat guy to wade through the bullshit.
@ GW:
OMG did they offer Zach Lee?
