  • Top Ten Highlights of the Cubs Game Tonight

    10. Ryan Dempster getting his one out of the evening.

    9. Koyie Hill hitting a homerun.

    8. Al Yellon and Buster Olney arguing on Twitter over whether Justin Berg hit Justin Upton on purpose.

    7. No killer tornadoes hit the stadium.

    6. The NFL Draft, NBA playoffs, and Michael Scott’s farewell provided some distraction.

    5. A long, lingering shot of a hot soccer mom licking a lollipop.

    4. Bob Brenly getting the giggles while discussing a tomahawk throwing contest.

    3. Did I mention the hot soccer mom with the lollipop?

    2. Long periods of dead air while Len and Bob sampled different hotdogs available at the concession stands.

    1. It mercifully ended.

We switched over because I was excited about the Cubbies playing during the Draft. All 5 of us in the room immediately laughed when we saw Justin Berg pitching as well as the score. We then looked up Dempsters ERA. Impressive. I’ve never seen anyone pass the 100 mark before.

      Only the Cubbies man.

      BPro:

Casey Coleman and James Russell have struggled as the Cubs’ replacement number four and five starters with Randy Wells and Andrew Cashner on the disabled list. Chicago’s lack of pitching depth is so bad that they were happy to postpone Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Rockies at Wrigley Field, though it was only lightly drizzling and 10 degrees warmer than the day before.

A State Patrol spokesman told the AJC that Derek Lowe was stopped around 10 p.m. on Peachtree Road at Rumson Road, and that the trooper “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” and gave Lowe a field sobriety test. Lowe refused to take a state-administered alcohol test, the spokesman said. Lowe was also charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.

    20. 20 Dr. Aneus Taint says:

So happy they went with Smith over Prince. I wish they could have traded with ATL, though. Fuck!

dj, Smith is Robert Quinn light. He’s a RS-Sophomore who lived in the backfield when healthy. Big, athletic kid with long arms who can play OLB in base and kick in to 3-technique on passing downs. Stock dropped a bit after production dropped off last year, but it was due to injury.

I’m just glad they FINALLY went after a pass rusher. I’m sure they tried to trade down, but it was a bad spot.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    21. 21 Dr. Aneus Taint says:

      Winners…
CLE: For the No. 6 trade alone. For a team with several holes to fill, they pretty much gave themselves that chance with one pick.
STL: I think we’re going to look back on this draft and wonder how Quinn fell to NO. 14.
WAS: Picked up a second rounder for dropping six spots.
NO: Picking up the best RB in the draft and a VERY versatile DE (whom I thought was better suited for a 3-4).
PIT: Absolutely perfect pick for their identity as a team.

      Losers…
ATL: I want to say they made a smart move. They obviously think they’re one player away and they went up to get the best (1A, at least). That’s just an awful lot to give up when Jonathan Baldwin went in the spot they occupied before giving up what they did.
DEN: Miller is a great player…for a 3-4. For DEN, he’ll pretty much be Aaron Curry with a little more pass-rush ability. Think SEA wants to do that pick again?

    22. 22 Dr. Aneus Taint says:

      My top 10 left:
      1. Da’Quan Bowers – It’s a medical risk, apparently, but it’s one you take in the second round on a kid with his 2010 tape.
      2. Colin Kaepernick – I just have a feeling about this kid.
      3. Marvin Austin – On talent alone, he’s a top-15 talent.
      4. Akeem Ayers – Scheme diverse. He’s Von Miller light.
      5. Aaron Williams – A top-15 pick if he declared after his sophomore season. Poor man’s Charles Woodson.
      6. Ryan Mallett – The Nuke Laloosh of this draft.
      7. Ben Ijalana – Give the kid some angry pills and he would have been selected yesterday.
      8. Brandon Harris – Forget his size. Look at the tape.
      9. Mikel LeShoure – Comparable to Ingram.
      10. Kyle Rudolph – Best TE in a weak class.

    23. 23 Dr. Aneus Taint says:

Guys I hope SF targets today:
      1. Aaron Williams
      2. Brandon Harris
      3. Colin Kaepernick
      4. Andy Dalton
      5. Davon House
      6. Ricky Stanzi
      7. Curtis Brown
      8. Curtis Marsh

If we go into Saturday with two guys from that list, I’ll be ecstatic.

I think Walterfootball is an average draft site, but I kind of agree with their grades.

      7. Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri
Over Robert Quinn and Prince Amukamara? Aldon Smith is a bit of a reach, but I think this is a good pick. Smith is a really good prospect and fills a huge need for the 49ers, who really needed to improve their pass rush this offseason. (Pick Grade: B)

      29. Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
In my 2011 NFL Mock Draft, I wrote that Jerry Angelo should be exiled if he doesn’t improve Jay Cutler’s pass protection. Well, Angelo gets to keep his home in Chicago.

Carimi is a great pick. He provides incredible value at No. 29 and also fills Chicago’s greatest need. Bears fans shouldn’t be booing this pick; they should be thrilled. (Pick Grade: A)

I say fuck them. Then again its such a black stain on the organization that it might hurt us trading with other teams if other teams think we are a bunch of boneheads. I would give them a 6th as a sign of good faith but not a fourth. I just domt want other teams to say the bairz dont work in good faith fuck them

I agree with the “fuck them”. We fucked up, yeah, but we wouldn’t be getting Garimi if KC or someone else picked him. The trade could have still been done (I think) after the KC pick too.

It will be interesting. If the teams had a verbal agreement, I think CHI should send a pick. Maybe not the fourth, but definitely something.

A lot of it depends on personnel. Ideally, 3-4 defenses work best when you have a two-gap NT like Wilfork. They also work well with slashers like Ratliff.

The draft’s first real curveball. Jim Harbaugh obviously wasn’t comfortable with Blaine Gabbert in his West Coast offense. While there are questions about Smith’s tight hips and questionable coverage skills, he’ll be standing up as a 3-4 pass-rushing linebacker. GM Trent Baalke continues his blue-collar approach after grabbing two linemen and a strong safety early last year.

Yeah, that’s the risk you run when you have 3 DTs and two DEs on the field at once.

…or Budweiser is paying them to distribute the t-shirts. I think it’s much more likely that this is a sponsorship activation that would be happening even if the games were selling out.

The reduction in concession prices may be something different, but folks I work with have been advocating team managers and owners that we know to do stuff like this as a marketing/PR play for the last couple of years because of the recession. I don’t know what the Cubs’ concession deal is, but for a lot of teams, concession sales on a specific item like hot dogs isn’t a big piece of their revenues because most of that money goes back to the food service contractor.

I threw away the latest Sports Business Journal yesterday, but through the 14 home games the Cubs had at the time of publishing, year-over-year attendance was down something like 18%. That’s big, but it’s not as bad as some other teams who depend more on gate revenues than the Cubs do. The trend was showing that paid attendance was rising as the season went on. It doesn’t look good, but it’s not as bad as lots of people were predicting that first AZ series.

The Cubs have only had one game over 90% capacity, and are averaging about 79% of seats sold, if I’m remembering right. By the way, the Yankees are only averaging something like 82%–the weather was awful in NYC for most of April.

I’m fully aware of that. One of my points is that concessions, for most teams, are not the source of revenue that one would think because most of that money is going to Aramark, Delaware North, or some other catering company. That said, I don’t know what the Cubs’ specific situation is.

My main point is that these promotions could be seen as savvy business moves, and it’s not necessarily indicative of the Cubs worrying about attendance.

That’s the idea of the joke. It really is fascinating that it traveled so much within the comic community and it never really entered the public consciousness until the movie was made. Even now, the movie language and descriptions are so rough (pretty much like the one I pulled off a website) that not a ton of people are aware of it.

When you are done with your article and want to publish it, change Publish to yes. You’ll need to select one of the two categories. Access should be set to Public. Enter a title for your article and then add your article to the editor. There are some icons to help with formatting.

There are several links below the editor (Image, Page break, More, Jcomments On and Jcomments Off). If you need to upload an image, go ahead. I don’t know why you’d want a page break. More creates a link to Read More. If your article is really long, this can be useful. Ignore the Jcomments buttons. Comments are enabled by default.

When you’re done with your article, change publish to yes and then click Save at the bottom. To view your article on the site, click Unobstructed Views on the menu.

DJ said it didn’t show up right away. Let me know if it shows up right away for you. Make sure you select Public for Access, Publish to Yes and then click the Unobstructed Views link after you’ve saved it. It should be there, but there may be a bit of a delay for some reason.
