Being closest in RA was much more than I deserved, since I basically looked at some of the answers posted by knowledgeable statfagets and triangulated. The only bit of coherence in my numbers was that I guessed the wins low, and then guessed Castro’s hits low too, figuring that if they only won 9 games this month it would be because Castro was slumping.
I know, I know, this is fascinating stuff. But where else would I talk about it?

I posted a YouTube video of Z’s particularly strenuous first pitch above. I’m pretty reasonably sure that he won’t miss his next start and that he was probably cleared by doctors before he did this. I guess exiting a game means he can’t do anything except lay in bed. And not have dinner.

Maybe you should e-mail Muskat to be sure, but the Cots contract blog says because Rami picked up the 2011 option, his 2012 option vests, and the Cubs have to buy him out if he doesn’t void it. If he’s traded, it’s guaranteed.

I wonder if the way it is worded it has to happen in that order to vest…

My understanding from Miles at the beginning of the season.: Once he picked up the 2011 option, the 2012 season became guaranteed if he was traded or if he achieved various personal achievements (top 5 in MVP voting for x number of years, World Series MVP, LCS MVP, etc.). If I recall correctly, the oly ones he had a chance of achieving was if the Cubs made the playoffs and we don’t have to worry about that anymore. So for all intents and purposes, Ramirez’s 2012 contract becomes guaranteed if he is traded without waving that clause.
I dreamed two nights ago that Aramis was traded to the Pirates. Probably won’t happen, especially since the Pirates in the dream were a mix of the MLB Pirates and my daughter’s tee-ball team. Mercurial Outfielder was also in the dream, but he was basically a block of text floating in the air.

The Rays have the 3rd most wins the AL (would lead the other divisions), and would lead the NL Central and be a half game back of the Giants in the west. They are on pace for a 90 win season and likely a third place finish and watching the playoffs from home.
I said the Rays would contend most of the year and they are doing just that; I got a lot of shit on opening day and the subsequent week about people telling me that Cubs will finish with a better record than the Rays (Rays started 1-8, mind you). So I’m pretty pleased, even if this is all for naught (i.e. not making the playoffs).

I’m still pounding out the preview, but their offense is comical. Konerko has been hitting out of his mind and Quentin is quite good, but Dunn has sucked and they have three other players with negative double digit wRAA. It’s amazing that their offense is middle of the pack in the AL.

Agreed – neverminding Dunn, you have blackholes all over the place – 2nd, 3rd, LF, CF, C. Their future is probably a bit brighter than the Cubs for a year or two, but there is a lot of nothing in the pipelines and they have as many holes as we seemingly do.

At least they have pitching. If they manage to drag themself further up in the standings they’ll probably deal for a bat. KW is generally a good trader, Edwin Jackson notwithstanding.

I figured their plan for this year was just to shed payroll and hope for the best. The team is built so well that it doesn’t actually surprise me that they’re doing so well.
The plan was to contend this year but A) not sacrifice the future and B) the single most important day was the first day of the draft.
They’ll probably make a move that looks like they are selling (Upton, maybe Niemann), but replace the person with a competent if not possibly better player (Jennings, Cobb, Torres) and hope the return on that trade would give them a major league ready youngish player. It’s also going to be brilliant when they trade Shields after this year and further stock their system.

that’s why I’ve wanted to scrap division play all this time, go with two 15 team leagues. best 4 (or 5 if that’s if they wanna do) make the playoffs in each league. simple. and traditional! because that’s the way it was pre-1969, except for more teams.
