Gotta tell you, you’re not giving me much hope for the future of this org.

Soriano obviously wants to play for a winner. In the 15 games he knew the Cubs would win, he is .339/.391/.589 . In the 35 games he knew we would lose, he batted .231/.275/.408. He enjoys winning.

Hopefully, they give him an extension, then! He’s only got, what, like 8 years left on his contract? The only rational course is extension at this point.

i like Almora but there is no reason not do draw a hard line with this new CBA. If he doesn’t sign then we have two top ten picks next year

Agreed. And in that case, if he doesn’t sign, then he won’t have a chance to get paid for another 3 years. So is the risk of injury or the risk of your stock dropping below #6 pick worth holding out for the hope of improving a few slots?

Agreed. I’d even offer below slot because there’s just no incentive not to do so anymore. At the most I’d offer slot. I would never go over slot. Not even for a Strasburg or Harper. They’re not worth the penalty.

But Almora says the same thing other committed college players say so I don’t think we should be surprised by it. Right now he’s just been drafted, but he has no contract with the Cubs. He’ll sign because a few million now is better than taking a risk you get injured over the next 3 years and improve your signing bonus by only a few million bucks. Or he could get worse and be taken in the 38th round.
